The ‘Halving’?

WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

THIS EVENING: EGP strengthens against the USD to below EGP 48 / USD 1

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and happy Thursday. We’re wrapping up the first workweek of Ramadan on a slightly calmer note than the past few days.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

The EGP strengthened by c. 60 piasters today to close below 48 against the greenback for the first time since the float on 6 March, according to Central Bank of Egypt data. The local currency has been in an upward trend since the float, gaining around 6% in the last six banking days, according to our calculations.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

It’s a mixed bag of headlines in the international press this afternoon. The Biden administration has been actively working on exhausting all options to de-escalate Houthi attacks on vessels passing through the Red Sea including reigniting a nearly year-long dormant diplomacy with Iran to persuade them to exert authority over the militia which they insist act independently, according to the Financial Times. Meanwhile, anonymous US officials revealed that former US president Donald Trump approved a CIA job to infiltrate Chinese social media in order to spread content opposing Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government and turn public opinion, while fostering distrust amongst the Chinese leaders in office, says Reuters. Trump has notoriously taken the strongest stance against China of any US President and vows to be even harsher if re-elected but the worry is that China uses this newly revealed information to support their own misgivings against the US.

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • We’re in for a big package from the EU: The EU and Egyptian officials are expected to ink an agreement that would unlock EUR bns of funding on Sunday when a delegation of EU officials—including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the Greek, Belgian, and Italian prime ministers — visits Cairo.
  • Egypt’s first-ever SAF production project is underway: The Oil Ministry has devised a plan that will see state-owned firm Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM) producing the country’s first sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
  • Gaza tops the agenda in El Sisi, Dutch PM meeting: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to Israel’s hostilities and called on Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to “exert his genuine efforts in this regard for ending this humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip and halting the escalation and tensions in various parts of the region as well.”

HELP GAZA-

Want to support relief efforts in Gaza, but don’t know how? We’ve got you. Nearly 2 mn people in Gaza have been thrown from their homes and every human being there lacks access to food, water, and fuel amid the most intense bombardment any population has endured this century.

The folks at Talabat are processing donations for a range of Gaza relief appeals by charities including the Egyptian Food Bank and Misr El Kheir. Pay in EGP using your credit card.

Or check out our list of charities to which you can make direct donations via bank deposit and / or Fawry.

?️ TOMORROW’S WEATHER- Look out for a partly cloudy day with a high of 25°C during the day and a low of 12°C in the evening, according to our favorite weather app.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

South Korean culture has funneled into contemporary culture

Culture could be South Korea’s biggest export. From the infectious beats of chart-topping K-pop groups to the cinematic brilliance of awardwinning films like Parasite, the Korean wave, or Hallyu, is sweeping across the globe, captivating audiences with its vibrant energy and enchanting storytelling, The Guardian writes.South Korea’s emergence as a cultural superpower is a testament to its remarkable transformation over the decades, evolving from a nation known primarily for cars and electronics to a global hub of creativity and innovation.

The global appetite for all things South Korean remains insatiable. K-pop dominates the charts, while groundbreaking shows like Squid Game captivate audiences worldwide. This cultural wave has prompted a Korean “gold rush ” in Western studios, with Netflix leading the charge with a USD 2.5 bn investment in South Korean projects. Even the BBC is getting a slice of the Korean Wave, launching a series like the GangnamProject that explores the journey of becoming a K-pop superstar.

Behind this cultural explosion lies a mix of government support and private sector ingenuity. Initiatives from the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Ministry have nurtured talent and facilitated the export of cultural products, while private enterprises have thrived with government backing. From the secrets of K-beauty to the flavors of K-food, South Korea’s cultural exports are booming, with local and international sales reaching a high of USD 52.8 bn in the first half of 2023 — and is expected to expand.

However, this cultural success story is not without its challenges. Issues like fair funding distribution alongside controversies surrounding mental health and exploitation have cast shadows on the industry. Yet, the Korean wave continues to evolve and expand, with growing international interest in Korean language and literature.

Is “the halving” driving BTC’s surge? There are as many theories about what has driven BTC north of USD 72k as there are pundits talking up the asset class, but one theory gaining a lot of currency in recent days attributes it to “the halving.”

Uh, Enterprise? What the [redacted] are you talking about? “The halving” (BTC bulls insist it is “The Halving, a proper noun) is a mechanism built into the currency designed to control the supply of new coins — effectively ensuring it remains valuable.

How it works: BTC has a built-in limit of 21 mn coins. The halving is a programmed event (architected by BTC’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto) that cuts the reward for miners in half, roughly every four years, thus controlling supply and making it hard to hit 21 mn coins in circulation (cf: Zeno’s Paradox).

It’s happened before: When BTC was first introduced, the reward for mining a block (IYKYK) was 50 BTC. The reward dropped to 25 BTC in 2012 (the first halving), then to 12.5 BTC in 2016, and to 6.25 BTC in 2020.

Why is it important? The idea is that the halving makes it less attractive for “miners” to make BTC, thus slowing its production and putting a floor under the price — kind of like OPEC+ output cuts designed to make sure oil remains expensive.

When will the “halving” happen? Nobody knows for sure, but most likely in April, it seems.

How is it impacting price? Some pundits think the prospect of tighter supply going forward is behind BTC breaking the USD 72k barrier for the first time a few weeks back.

A man in the hospital brings two unlikely young men colliding into each other’s lives

? ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

Two worlds collide in Masar Egbari. When Omar (Mahmoud El Bezzawy) ends up in the hospital, Hussein (Ahmad Dash) and Ali (Essam Omar), two complete strangers, discover that they are siblings. Their father had married into two different social classes and did not tell his respective families about his polygamy. Ali is an academic hoping to practice law in France, while Hussien is a hustler running his own food truck. But when the cat is out of the bag they’re forced to work together.

The first episode starts off with the death of a woman, who we see falling off the roof of a building.Little do they, and we, know that their father has been roped into the case, prompting the brothers to come together to uncover who’s responsible. Expect to see them struggle to reconcile their differences and come to terms with the fact that they are family.

The casting looks great so far. Dash gets better and better in each role he takes on and is able to commit to completely different characters. His brash, street-smart character contrasts nicely to Ali’s soft-spoken, calm persona. Cinema veterans Basma and Sabreen play the concerned, hardworking mothers who have been betrayed. Look for the moment of the reveal, as each actress truly outdoes the other.

There is a clear direction with the cinematography. As the characters roam the streets, their backdrops are grim and reflect their turmoil. It’s almost like the saturation has been toned down to give the setting a gloomy, gray cast as opposed to the glamorous shots of the Nile and bright skyscrapers we’re used to seeing.

You can watch it on Shahid.

? EARS TO THE GROUND-

The Gilded Gentleman is all about glamorous (and not-so-glamorous) history. Carl Raymond unveils the high socialite life that took place behind the closed doors of America's Gilded Age, France's Belle Epoque, and late Victorian and Edwardian England.

Raymond and his guests will cover it all over a cup of tea. The biweekly show discusses all things Gilded Age from society and culture to architecture, food, design, and music. Sometimes they’ll look at specific well-known names from the time and detail their influence over their societies, such as socialite Mrs. Astor who had the final say on who made it into high society.

Edith Warton’s The Age of Innocence is the topic of our favorite episode. It’s no secret how talented the prolific author is, but the well-researched podcast fills you in on the nuances of the time that might help you understand her writing and its subtleties better.

If you’re a fan of HBO’s The Gilded Age, this one’s for you and these two podcasts are a good pairing to get through together. The show delivers on the visuals and storyline, while the podcast can provide you with the context and background. Either way, you’ll see just how cut-throat those times were if you wanted to make it into a certain crowd.

You can listen onApplePodcasts, Spotify,Audible, and Amazon Music.
