Keep it authentic

Good afternoon friends, and welcome to a fresh week. Our news cycle is going strong, with more to keep an eye on from the regional conflict and COP28.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Scatec signs on to USD 1.1 bn green methanol supply agreement:Norwegian renewables developer Scatec could supply ships with green methanol under a USD 1.1 bn MoU signed with the Suez Canal Economic Zone, according to a statement. The agreement includes producing 100k tons of green methanol per year by 2027, the statement says. Under the agreement, Scatec will develop 190 MW of electrolyzer capacity to produce the green methanol by relying on 317 MW of wind energy and 140 MW of solar energy.

Scatec likes to get things done at COP: Scatec and the SCZone signed the agreement on the sidelines of COP28, which is currently underway in Dubai’s Expo City. At last year’s COP27, Scatec, the OCI / Adnoc joint venture Fertiglobe, Orascom Construction, and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (SFE) began commissioning the first phase of their 100 MW green hydrogen plant in Ain Sokhna.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

This afternoon brings us another mixed bag of headlines in the international press. Since the truce with Hamas ended on Friday, Israel has shifted its focus to aerial attacks on the South of Gaza, where the majority of the population has gathered, particularly concentrated on Khan Younis (previously a “safer zone”) and Rafah. It’s expected that a ground invasion might follow. Those in the West Bank, where Hamas has no authority, have also been fleeing their homes in the midst of attacks by the IDF and Israeli settlers. ON THE BUSINESS SIDE, COP28 IS LEADING THE CONVERSATION- IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva emphasized the need for carbon pricing at COP28, says CNBC. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus brought attention to climate change’s “immediate and present” threats to health, reports the Associated Press, and called for COP to host its first ever “Health Day.”

Pfizer’s latest weight loss pill fails + Why authentic is the word of the year

WEIGHT LOSS DRUG FAIL-Pfizer’s latest weight loss drug didn’t make the cut, again, with the company saying over the weekend that it will discontinue developing the twice-daily treatment, danuglipron. The pharma giant’s latest creation joined a long list of scrapped obesity pills, according to CNBC.

Side effects were to blame: Pfizer is discontinuing the meds due to side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea leading to more than 50% of the test subjects discontinuing the medication, despite losing weight, according to the disclosure.

Retracing steps to create a one-day pill. The company announced that it will share data on a once-daily version of the medicine, as opposed to two, which will determine the future direction of the drug.

Danuglipron is not the first Pfizer drug to fail this year. It abandoned another one-daily weight loss pill last June due to concerns over elevated liver enzymes.

Weight loss drugs are gaining traction as Novo Nordisk’s Wegovyand Ozempiccontinue to gain success. The popular meds, the latter of which is actually meant for diabetes treatment, have disappeared off the shelves in the past year as they are used for sustainable weight loss. In 3Q 2023, manufacturer Novo Nordisk saw sales of Ozempic hit USD 3.48 bn, rising 56% y-o-y.

Developing a safe and effective weight loss drug isn’t a walk in the park. Numerous obesity drug candidates have been rejected and declined by US regulators or ultimately withdrawn from the market due to unintended side effects, such as increasing the risk of cancer, psychiatric problems, and elevatingblood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes.

The word “authentic” is the Merriam-Webster dictionary’s word of the year. While it’s not exactly a “new” word — in the way that Gen Z terminology has made its way into our daily lexicon — authentic was the most-searched word of the year, compiling a whopping half a mn entries, according to Merriam-Webster’sstatement.

The search surge is related to several themes defining 2023 like AI, celebrities, personal identity, and social media. Being “genuine” or “real” has become a desired quality in society especially, through social media with the sudden popularity of the app BeReal, or with restaurants when looking for the “real thing” dishes.

Being “authentic” on the internet attracts attention and revenue. Paradoxically, the pursuit of authenticity has become a performance, with “authentic content creators” considered the standard for building trust.

SIGN OF THE TIMES- Many of the words that made it onto this year’s list have a clear connection to the significant news events: Some of these words include coronation, referring to King Charles’ … coronation; dystopian, as books and movies have increasingly been coming out in this genre; EGOT, which stands for the highly coveted milestone of earning the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards; implode, indicating the incident with OceanGate’s Titan submarine, and more like doppelganger, covenant, kibbutz, elemental, X, and indict.

Blue Eye Samurai is the reason you should give animated TV shows a chance. This series (watch trailer, runtime: 2:21) takes place in Edo-era Japan, and takes a Mulan-esque premise to new heights. Mizu is shunned by her community for being born to a Japanese mother and a white father, constantly being outed by her blue eyes.

Constantly tormented for being a child of the “white devil,” Mizu is only saved by a blind sword maker who mistakes her for a boy and takes her in as his apprentice. She becomes a skilled swordsman and powerful warrior on a personal mission, though she encounters trouble frequently on her quest.

What is she after? Well, there are only four white men in all of Japan — and she’s going to kill all of them. One of them is her possible biological father, and she won’t let a case of mistaken identity stop her from ending his life.

The show is rife with battles and blood. Limbs are chopped off, teeth pulled out, and Mizu slices through enemies like a knife through warm butter.

It’s a gory show, but it’s also incredibly gorgeous. There are snow-covered landscapes, beautifully painted forests, and roads dappled with pink lights. The world has a hint of Game of Thrones dramatic cinematography in it.

It is a masterpiece of storytelling, inspired by co-showrunner Amber Noizumi’s personal experience, who developed the show alongside her husband Michael Green. Green has ample experience writing story-led media, working on Logan and Blade Runner 2049, both praised for their ornate and introspective narratives.

You can find Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix.

PJ Vogt is back with Search Engine: A podcast as random as our search history. After the successful Reply All podcast — which earned a 4.7 / 5 review by over 27k listeners on Apple Podcast — host PJ Vogt now hosts a show that answers “questions about the world,” according to his Instagram biography.

On his X profile, he added that there’s “no question too big, no question too small.” And true to his motto he is: Throughout the episodes, he provides answers to the interesting (can empty office spaces solve housing issues?), the trending (how did BTC come into existence?), and the straight out bizarre (what IS going on with Elon Musk?).

Keeping up with the times: One episode that particularly struck a chord addresses a question that often keeps us up at night: How do I find new music now that I’m old and irrelevant? No one likes to feel old, so we try to stop ourselves when we’re headed down the “you call this music?” road…

…swinging in to the rescue is author Kelefa Sanneh, who penned Major Labels: A Historyof Popular Music in Seven Genres. Along with Vogt, the pair discuss how we can easily discover new music when we need to spice up our playlists and change things up before, of course, we revert to the classic hits we love and cherish.

INSIDE INDUSTRY

What the government is doing to boost Egypt’s marble + granite industry

Is Egypt’s marble + granite industry on its way to becoming a key contributor to our exports? After years of falling by the wayside, the government is turning its eyes to the marble and granite industry as it hopes to turn the Shaq El Tebaan — the largest marble and granite industrial cluster in the country — into a hub for the production and export of the stones. Recent moves from the government are making industry players optimistic that their sector is on its way to being resuscitated, with several key issues being addressed while paving the way for tech modernization and infrastructural improvements.

A look at the industry: The broad majority of the marble + granite industry is concentrated in the Shaq El Tebaan in Maadi’s Tora area, east of the Autostrad road. The area is comprised of three primary areas: Kotsika, Badr El Laithy, and Shaq El Tebaan, together spanning 1.6k feddans. The area brings together 1,868 factories and workshops all dedicated to manufacturing and exporting marble, with some 45k direct workers and almost as many indirect workers. Shaq El Tebaan has historically been struggling from a lack of attention and development, leading to several compounding issues, but continues to be the hub from which Egypt exports its marble to 118 countries.

Export figures: Egypt has exported some EGP 11.2 bn worth of marble over the course of the first nine months of 2023, according to data from the Building Materials Export Council seen by Enterprise. That’s compared to EGP 4.5 bn during the same period last year, although these figures have not been adjusted for currency fluctuations. Libya and Saudi Arabia accounted for the largest volume of our exports during the period, the data indicated.

Despite having plenty of potential, the industry isn’t without its problems: Industry players Enterprise spoke with pointed to a number of key challenges, including that many workshops in Shaq El Tebaan continue to operate in the informal economy, as well as challenges related to procedures for industrial land allocation, accessing infrastructure such as road and electricity networks, and facing high costs for transport and movement of goods in dry ports and on roads.

What’s being done to support the industry? Back in 2018, the government launched a EGP3.6 bn project to develop Shaq El Tebaan and push it towards becoming a global hub for the industry, but action on the project began in earnest in recent months. The project is designed to help boost exports out of Shaq El Tebaan to USD 1 bn per year, according to El Badawy Abaza, Vice President of the Federation of Egyptian Industries’ building materials division. The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) has also kicked off a series of meetings and sessions with industry players to address their concerns, acting IDA chair Nahed Youssef said.

The main goal of the project is to provide Shaq El Tebaan with the facilities, services, and infrastructural network it needs to operate at a higher level of efficiency, while also working on developing the industry itself to turn the area into an integrated city with high levels of manufacturing technology that meets international standards. These developments are geared towards driving more competition and increasing export, while ensuring optimal use of natural resources, Youssef said.

Infrastructure is a priority: The development plan includes raising the efficiency of internal road networks, linking them to main roads, and setting up more fueling stations. There is also work underway to rehabilitate electricity networks and transformers in the area. The first phase of the infrastructure has been completed, including a complete modernization of the electricity network, and work is underway on water and sanitation infrastructure. The government also plans to set up a dry port and freezone in Shaq El Tebaan, in addition to an investment complex to serve investors, with representatives of all government agencies and banks, according to Abaza.

Establishing a company to manage the industrial zone: The IDA plans to establish a company to manage the zone two years ago, one of our sources told us, but the decision has yet to come into effect.

But a big focus is also on making the industry go legit: Investors and workshop owners in the area will be able to reconcile any license violations with the government and legalize their status, with the approval legalization requests currently getting expedited, according to Abaza. Issuing operating licenses in the area is set to take less than six months, with facilities being offered to support investors in meeting financial requirements, he said.
