Guy Ritchie’s 2019 crime/comedy The Gentlemen follows the story of Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), an American Oxford graduate-slash-drug lord considering selling his marijuana empire. Once word gets out, London’s underbelly implodes in a mess of b’naires, gangs, and con artists fighting to take over. The cast also includes Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, and Hugh Grant, all of whom deliver a masterclass in Ritchie’s signature sharp-tongued rapid-fire banter. Hugh Grant specifically breaks out of his usual mold, delivering a surprisingly convincing performance as a private investigator specialized in manipulation. Though undeniably entertaining, its non-linear narrative and fast-paced plot might be overwhelming for viewers who prefer more straightforward films that give them space to reflect on the plot. But if you’re a fan of visually engaging, intellectually stimulating crime flicks with unexpected plot twists, head over to Netflix for your next movie night.
