WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TONIGHT

THIS EVENING: EMX will begin trading sugar from tomorrow

Good afternoon, friends and happy Wednesday. We still have one more day to go before the weekend, although this is the last issue of EnterprisePM for the week:

PSA- We will not be in your inboxes tomorrow. We take occasional publication holidays throughout the year during quiet seasons when we need a bit of time to tool up, do some training, or gear-up to do something new. We’re doing all three tomorrow, and that means EnterpriseAM, Enterprise Climate, Enterprise Logistics and EnterprisePM will all be off. We’ll be back to our normal publication schedule on Friday with Enterprise Weekend.

THE BIG STORY TODAY

Sugar is coming to the EMX: The Supply Ministry will begin selling sugar on the Egyptian Mercantile Exchange (formerly known as Egycomex) as of tomorrow, Reuters reports. The exchange — which already offers yellow corn and wheat — has invited traders to register on the EMX to start trading sugar, Reuters reports, citing a statement from EMX head Ibrahim Ashmawy.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD

We have a very mixed bag in the international business press this afternoon, with no single story leading the conversation. Among the headlines to keep an eye on:

  • US asks Iran to stop selling drones to Russia (Financial Times)
  • Maui tourism, an economic mainstay, sparks anger amid fire ruin (Reuters)
  • China’s Tencent misses expectations despite fastest bottomline rise since late 2021 (CNBC)
  • Saudi pile of US treasuries at six-year low in shift to risk (Bloomberg)

** CATCH UP QUICK on the top stories from today’s EnterpriseAM:

  • Gov’t wants more for the Gabal El Zeit wind farm: The Madbouly government is in talks with Actis in a bid to convince the UK-based emerging markets private equity giant to pay USD 600-800 mn for the 580-MW Gabal El Zeit wind farm.
  • Kashier, NARD partner to provide integrated payment solutions: Egyptian e-payments startup Kashier Payments has signed a partnership agreement with multinational retail management and cloud software firm NARD to provide a payment acceptance service to merchants.
  • The earnings dump continues: The end-of-earnings-season rush continued yesterday, with a number of EGX-listed companies releasing their 2Q / 1H 2023 financials.

FOR YOUR COMMUTE

Don’t stop fidgeting — it might be good for your health + Netflix starts beta test of cloud-stream games

Fidgeting might actually have benefits: Although fidgeting is typically perceived as a sign of boredom or restlessness, recent research suggests that it may actually be good for you, according to the BBC. Fidgeting can help burn calories, manage stress, improve focus and concentration, and possibly even live longer. “If you're sedentary, that's not good for you. But if you are sedentary and fidget, then actually that does reduce your risk of long-term ill health,” a nutritional epidemiologist explained on the BBC’s The Infinite Monkey Cage.

Fidgeting can help with weight management: Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975, and sitting for long periods — particularly as desk-based work is increasingly common — is thought to be a contributing factor, BBC reports. One study found that fidgeting while sitting can increase the amount of calories burned by 29% compared to lying down without moving. Fidgeting when standing can boost the number of calories burned by 38%, according to the study. In another small study, obesity expert and professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic James Levine and his team examined the impact of fidgeting on weight gain. They overfed 16 lean volunteers by 1k calories a day for eight weeks. Some participants were “remarkably resilient” to weight gain due to the fidget factor. The study found that overfeeding increased energy expenditure by 700 calories per day, primarily through fidgeting, BBC reports.

Netflix games go live in Canada and UK: Netflix launched a limited beta test of cloud-streamed games in Canada and the UK on Monday, the company said in a blog post. The beta test will allow a small number of subscribers to play games — starting with Oxenfree and Molehew’s Mining Adventure — on selected TVs, connected TV devices, and on its web platform. The beta version is meant to test the company’s game streaming technology and controller. “We’ve been focused on creating a great gaming experience for our members since 2021 when we added mobile games to Netflix,” Netflix Vice President Mike Verdu said. “While we’re still very early in our games journey, we’re excited to bring joy to members with games,” he added.

From an elephant poacher to a kidnapper + murderer: The story of Veerappan

? ON THE TUBE TONIGHT-
(all times CLT)

The Hunt for Veerappan is a true crime Netflix docu-series chronicling the life and crimes of Indian bandit and poacher Veerappan, including the years-long manhunt that eventually ended his string of kidnappings, murders, and smugglings. The four-part documentary follows the life of the controversial criminal known for sporting a big mustache and a bigger gun, and how he went from being an elephant poacher in the forests of southern India to becoming a domestic terrorist. He was charged for kidnapping high-profile politicians and holding them for ransom, killing a large number of forest officials, police officers, and over 2k elephants, as well as stealing ivory and sandalwood worth USD mns. It wasn’t until he was an active criminal for 34 years — during which time he also built a family — that the Special Task Force of Tamil Nadu Police caught and killed Veerappan in 2004. The documentary includes interviews with some of Veerappan’s gang members, his widow Muthulakshmi, members of the Special Task Force, investigative journalists, and the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army.

After the big leagues kicked off last week, we’re in for a calmer football day — albeit not an eventless one, with Champions League defending champions Manchester City and Sevilla, the Europa League title holder, meet in Athens to battle it out for the UEFA Super Cup at 10pm. Tonight will mark the first time Man City is competing for the Super Cup, with the team looking to add another title to the treble under its belt from the last season, when it earned the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League. Meanwhile, Sevilla has the highest number of Europa League titles, having taken home seven trophies, and is looking to add a second Super Cup to its trophy collection, after earning the cup once — despite making it to six of the matches.

? EAT THIS TONIGHT-

Excuse mon French: The Miam Miam was made to satisfy that all-too-familiar post-beach knot of hunger. The food truck, which is located in the North Coast’s Hacienda Red, delivers to a number of nearby compounds. The menu draws inspiration from French cuisine — more specifically, Miam Miam’s burgers are heavily influenced by the decadent beef bourguignon, “tender, slow-cooked beef tucked into a soft and fluffy potato bun.” The family-owned business, which is run by a young couple, also features on its menu smashed wagyu beef burgers, duck confit sandwiches, hotdogs, and a variety of fried chicken sandwiches.

BONUS POINTS- You can make every sandwich your own by adding from a range of toppings — like onion jam and sautéed mushrooms — and sauces — think jalapeño ranch or apricot chutney.

? UNDER THE LAMPLIGHT-

Just when we thought we’d had enough of thrillers, we stumbled upon Clémence Michallon’s The Quiet Tenant . A seemingly ordinary father and husband, Aidan Thomas also happens to be a serial killer with eight murders under his belt and a desire for more. But no one in his upstate New York community suspects his dark secret — nor the fact that he has kidnapped another woman, Rachel, whom he has kept locked in his shed for years. Things get more complicated when Aidan’s wife dies and Aidan has no choice but to move with his teenage daughter, Cecilia. The new widower decides to take a risk: Introduce Cecilia to his victim in the hopes that the latter’s trauma from being held captive for so long will bend her into submission to make her play along with his narrative. Rachel, Aidan tells Cecilia, is just a friend they are helping out for a while. But Rachel has other plans in mind when she comes into contact with the young girl. This page-turner is all at once exciting, disturbing, and written with just the right amount of tension and suspense to leave us stirring and out of breath.
