A number of automotive industry figures are calling on the government to shelve plans to phase out tuk tuks and replace them with minivans, according to the local press. More than USD 15 mn in investments in feeder industries are at risk if the government goes ahead with the plan, VP of the Automotive Feeding Industries division at the Federation of Egyptian Industries Raafat El Khanagry said. Arafat Rashid, chairman of the Auto Engineering Company, suggested that the government place restrictions on tuk tuks and fine offenders, rather than risk investment losses and eliminate a source of income for a large number of people.
