Based on a True Story — turning an unimaginable real-life plot twist into a compelling business venture: In Based on a True Story, heavily pregnant Ava (Kaley Cuoco, of the Big Bang Theory fame) and Nathan (Chris Messina) live a boring, routine and unsatisfying life in suburban California. Fantasies and daydreams come to a screeching halt when their lives get turned upside down upon the discovery that their devilishly handsome handyman (played by Tom Bateman) is actually a prolific serial killer. Instead of turning him in, true crime aficionado Ava convinces Nathan to pitch the Westside Ripper on creating a one-of-a-kind true crime podcast to bank the big bucks and gain notoriety. Well-paced and chock full of nicely timed comedy, Cuoco and Messina make a believable bickering couple experiencing a mini crisis of faith in their marriage. The show is an easy binge that balances fantasy and reality in good measure, with Bateman delivering a stellar performance as your friendly neighborly serial killer.
