📽 Thirty years of the seven deadly sins: It’s officially been 30 years since the premier of the David Fincher’s Se7en, a film that left a significant mark on the ‘90s film industry with its star studded cast — including Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey — and its gripping storyline, which revolves around a serial killer who believes he can save society from its sins.

The plot: William Somerset (Freeman) is a veteran police detective in a mysterious city filled with crime and corruption. During his last week of work — after making the choice to retire early — Somerset meets his replacement, young detective David Mills (Pitt), who moved from another state with his wife Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow) to take on the new position. But before the veteran cop can retire, a gruesome crime occurs.

The victim is an obese man forced to keep eating until he dies — discovered in a room with the word “gluttony” written all over the walls. As strange crimes continue to unfold, the two detectives discover that they’re dealing with a serial killer named John Doe (Spacey), who targets victims representing the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and wrath.

This killer’s goal is to cleanse the dark city of its many sinners by leaving gruesome Dantean warnings to those that might commit a sin. Doe is determined to finish the job — regardless of how close the detectives get to catching him.

Years may have passed, but this movie still has the same impact it had the day it came out. The dark narrative and the captivating plot, which draws inspiration from Christian theology and Dante’s Divine Comedy, creates a unique cinematic experience — with an ending that leaves quite the mark on its viewers. The production company actually proposed a different ending that was rejected by Fincher and Pitt, who threatened to withdraw from the project if the ending was changed. This shocking finale, alongside strongly developed characters and a perfect soundtrack, make this film an absolute must-watch.
