? This heist drama is inspired by history — with a hint of fictionalized storytelling. Set in 1981 amid the politically charged context of a newly democratizing Spain, Bank Under Siege follows a siege at Barcelona’s Central Bank that sees a young journalist race to uncover the truth about the attack.

The five-episode miniseries jumps into the action immediately. The story begins with the armed robbers storming the bank, led by José (Miguel Herrán). The attackers claim that their mission is politically motivated and demand the release of conspirators involved in a failed coup attempt — based on the 1981 coup attempt launched by Francoist forces against Spain’s fragile democratic government. Things take a turn, however, when they see piles of money lying in the vault.
The show doesn’t just follow the robbers. We’re also introduced to Maider (Maria Pedraza), a journalist navigating her first major assignment, and her editor, Isabel (Patricia Vico). Their dynamic captures the challenges faced by women in male-dominated workplaces during the era.
The show has a well-constructed narrative backed up by solid performances. It avoids sensationalism and opts for a more character-driven approach, making it a compelling watch.
