? Ted Danson goes undercover — sort of — in A Man on the Inside, the latestcreation from Michael Schur, who brought us classics like The Office, Parks and Recreation, and The Good Place. It’s part heartfelt comedy, part moving moments, and all Danson charm. Inspired by the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent, this is a spy mission worth watching — not for the thrills, but for the feels.

The plot thickens (gently): Charles (Danson), a retired engineering professor adrift after his wife’s passing, spends his days sending newspaper clippings to his daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) and re-reading his favorite spy novels. When Emily urges him to find a hobby, Charles unexpectedly lands himself a peculiar gig: infiltrating a posh retirement community to help private investigator Julie Kovalenko (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) crack a jewelry theft case. Armed with a wire, camera-glasses, and no clue whatsoever, Charles becomes a spy.

Charles awkwardly navigates his mission, but ends up befriending the residents while dealing with painful memories of his late wife’s battle with dementia. What begins as a lighthearted escapade becomes an exploration of loss, rediscovery, and the small joys of building new relationships in unexpected places.

While the laughs don’t come as frequently as in Schur’s previous shows, that’s not the point of the series. A Man on the Inside trades rapid-fire humor for subtle wit and touching storytelling, offering something more reflective and emotionally rich — even Forbes called it one of the best Netflix shows of 2024. If you’re in the mood for a show that’s as heartwarming as it is entertaining, this series delivers.
