Paradise : A dystopian thriller that feels eerily likely in a future powered by cutting-edge technology. The Netflix film, originally in German, follows the story of a young couple, Max and Elena. While the wife is a doctor, her husband has a less conventional occupation: He works for Aeon as a broker. The biotechnology company specializes in managing the sale and donation of people’s years. In a world heavily segregated by economic means, people are opting to literally shorten their lives in order to gain access to material benefits — to the great advantage of those who can afford it, of course. But this seemingly consensual bargain takes a dark turn when Max and Elena are in debt, and the latter is forced to repay the bank with her life — or at least several decades of it.
