After a four-year hiatus, Black Mirror is back. The popular Netflix anthology series explores the dark and often dystopian implications of our reliance on technology and its impact on society. This season seems to focus more on our misuse of the tools we’re given, regardless of technological advancement, with three of the five episodes taking place in the past, one of which doesn’t focus on the use of technology at all. Showrunner Charlie Brooker explained that season six was delayed because the world already felt too dystopian, perhaps inspiring this season’s theme.

Season six adds five new episodes to the series’ catalog. Beyond the Sea, the third episode, is one of the more disturbing episodes of the season, and the most conventionally Black Mirror. It follows two astronauts (Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett) two years deep into a six-year mission, but able to live on earth simultaneously by transferring their consciousness to lifelike mechanical models of themselves called Replicas. When a cult that believes that Replicas are unnatural interferes with their lives, the astronauts find themselves grappling with grief and helplessness while floating farther and farther away from home.
