The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) has completed the designs for Egypt’s USD 60-70 mn power interconnection project with Sudan and acquired the necessary permits and licenses to begin construction, EETC Chairman Gamal Abdel Rehim said, Al Mal reports. The first phase of the project, which is expected to go online in December, should see the two countries exchange from 200-300 MW of power. India’s Larsen & Toubro had been awarded the contracts to link the two countries’ electricity grids, and should sign the final agreement “soon,” Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker had previously said. December should also see Egypt begin working on another USD 4 bn interconnection project with Cyprus. A similar project to connect Egypt’s grid to Saudi Arabia has reportedly been pushed to 2022 from 2020. On a related note, Egypt will reportedly be exporting an annual 10 GWh of electricity to Jordan, up from 2 GWh,under a new agreement between the EETC and Jordan’s Electricity Ministry. The price will be set according to the London Stock Exchange’s global average at the time of export, sources told Al Mal.
