18k tonnes of Russian wheat, seized by Egyptian authorities at the Dekheila port in Alexandria in November, could be released by local officials after fumigation, Reuters reported, citing Russia's agriculture safety watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor. The seized wheat was deemed unsuitable for human consumption by prosecutors despite having passed quarantine checks successfully, after a large number of insects was found in the storage site. “The fumigation will get rid of pests ... and will probably allow Egyptian officials to release the seized wheat,” Rosselkhoznadzor says. On a related note, the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) has purchased 60,000 tonnes of wheat from Ukraine, to be delivered during the first 10 days of March, Al Shorouk reports. Reutersalso has the story.
