DP World to invest USD 5 bn in India. Alfanar’s adds wings to its Indian subsidiary

WHAT WE’RE TRACKING TODAY

THIS MORNING: India-Oman CEPA awaits Muscat’s nod; China restarts rare-earth shipments

Good morning, friends. We begin the week with DP World’s latest investment pledge in India’s logistics sector. India-Oman FTA signing seems to be delayed due to pending approval from Majlis Shura. While China has restarted rare-earth minerals to India, we also look at the impact of climate change on India’s economy in the long run. Let’s dive in.

WATCH THIS SPACE-

#1- The signing of the India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has been delayed pending procedural approvals on the Omani side, and not due to any disagreements, Moneycontrol reports, citing unnamed government sources. Negotiations, which concluded in August after five rounds of talks, are now awaiting approval from Oman’s legislative body, Majlis Al Shura, and the cabinet.

The benefits: The pact, which follows the India-UAE CEPA inked in 2022, is expected to significantly bolster labor-intensive Indian exports such as textiles, gems and jewellery, and leather goods — all of which face steep tariffs in the US. Currently, nearly 80% of Indian goods incur an average 5% import duty in Oman.

Bilateral trade between India and Oman stood at USD 10.6 bn in FY 2024-25, with India running a USD 2.5 bn trade deficit. Indian exports amounted to USD 4 bn and imports stood at USD 6.5 bn.

#2- China has resumed rare-earth magnet exports to India, approving licenses for several automotive and electronics manufacturers after a six-month suspension, The Hindu Businessline reports. Licenses have been issued to Continental India, Hitachi Astemo India, Jay Ushin, and DE Diamond Electric India.

Conditions apply: The permits, granted under China’s export-control rules, require importers to submit end-user certificates and restrict re-export to the US or use in defence applications, Business Standard reports. The move follows a pause imposed in April 2025, when Beijing tightened scrutiny over rare-earth shipments amid geopolitical tensions.

Supply chain reprieve: The approval is expected to ease component shortages for India’s EV, electronics, and auto-parts sectors, which faced disruptions in manufacturing during the suspension period. China accounts for nearly 90% of global rare-earth magnet output, making its resumption critical for India’s manufacturing value chain Reuters reports.

#3- India risks losing up to 25% of its GDP by 2070 due to long-term economic effects of climate change, The Hindu reports, quoting Ewa Suwara, the deputy head of delegation of the EU to India. Ewa highlighted the need for urgent and joint action to tackle these risks. The estimate is based on findings from the Asian Development Bank regional climate impact study, which accounts for losses from extreme heat, rising sea levels, and reduced labor productivity. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting India’s clean-energy and climate-resilience goals, including technology transfer and investments in renewable-energy and battery-storage projects.

#4- Google will offer 18 months of no-charge access to its Gemini AI service for all 505 mn subscribers of India’s largest telecom carrier Reliance Jio, Reuters reports. The subscription — normally priced at around INR 35.1k (USD 399) per annum in India — includes access to Gemini’s advanced model, 2 TB of cloud storage, and AI-powered image and video generation tools. The rollout will begin with 18-25-year-old users on select Jio plans before expanding nationwide.

Context: The rollout follows OpenAI’s decision to make its ChatGPT Go plan available at no cost for 12 months to Indian users. At the same time, Bharti Airtel is extending 12 months of complimentary access to Perplexity Pro — a plan typically priced at around INR 17k — as global AI companies compete to expand user adoption in India’s rapidly expanding user base, Reuters reports.

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-

No single story is dominating today’s headlines, but a few are getting top billing:

Israel threatened to increase its attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanon with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that Israel “shall take whatever action is required” to prevent Hezbollah from opening a new front. Meanwhile, US special envoy Tom Barrack warned that time is running out for Lebanon’s government to enforce the ceasefire deal struck last year, which requires Beirut to disarm Hezbollah, something both Israel and Washington say the group is actively refusing. ALSO WORTH READING THIS MORNING‑ Top AI labs including Google DeepMind, Anthropic, OpenAI and Microsoft are racing to plug a new security hole in large language models that allows hackers to embed commands in emails or websites and trick the models into spilling confidential data, the Financial Times report.

AND- US envoys are accused of deploying “bully‑boy tactics” to intimidate diplomats from Africa, the Pacific, and the Caribbean into sidelining the UN-backed Net Zero Framework for global shipping, writes the Financial Times.

DP World to invest additional USD 5 bn in India’s logistics sector

DP World will invest an additional USD 5 bn in India to strengthen its supply chain network, which supports both exports and domestic trade, according to a press release. The announcement was made during India Maritime Week 2025, where DP World inked five MoUs with several industrial partners. The signed agreements include:

#1- Unifeeder to develop India’s shipping capabilities: DP World’s feeder and multimodal transportation firm Unifeeder partnered with Sagarmala Finance Corporation to develop green coastal and short-sea shipping across India. The partnership will focus on scaling commercially viable coastal transport models.

#2- Drydocks to support advancing ship building and repair skills: Drydocks World also inked a tripartite MoU with Cochin Shipyard Limited, and the Center of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding (CEMS) to improve skill development in shipbuilding and repair.

#3- DP World and the Cochin Port Authority agreed to upgrade handling facilities at DP World’s International Container Transshipment Terminal in Kochi. The initiative aims to improve operational efficiency, expand trade capacity, and enhance Kerala’s maritime connectivity.

#4- Deendayal Port Authority, DP World, and Nevomo (MagRail) signed an agreement to design and install a 750-meter booster pilot track within the port. The three firms previously partnered to mull the deployment of autonomous magnetic rail freight movement solutions in India.

Where will the money go? The logistics firm, which invested USD 3 bn so far in India, focuses its projects on developing the Asian country’s infrastructure, improving multimodal connectivity, and increasing its global trade competitiveness.

What they said: “This new investment, combined with the strategic partnerships, reaffirms our commitment to advancing India’s maritime and logistics industry. Aimed at further lowering logistics costs, supporting local manufacturing, and expanding access to markets across the country, these initiatives will strengthen India’s innovative and sustainable maritime capabilities,” DP World’s CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said.

ICYMI- Abu Dhabi is planning on investing upwards of USD 2 bn in India’s Maharashtra’s ports and shipbuilding sector. The investments will be explored under an MoU linked between Abu Dhabi Ports Group, Abu Dhabi Investment Office, and Maharashtra Ports Department. Meanwhile, DP World’s marine and ship repair subsidiary Drydocks World inked a heads of terms agreement with India’s Cochin Shipyard to set up India’s first vessel repair cluster.

It’s all part of a bigger plan: DP World announced intentions last December to boost its presence in India by expanding into more industrial parks and logistics projects. The port operator launched operations at Cochin Economic Zone in the Vallarpadam terminal back in June 2024 and also operates in Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva Business Park and Chennai’s Integrated Chennai Business Park. The firm also operates five container terminals in India’s Mundra, Cochin, and Chennai, as well as two in Mumbai.

Alfanar-owned Senvion to ramp up India output to 2 GW

Saudi Arabia-based Alfanar Group’s subsidiary Senvion India plans to expand its annual manufacturing capacity to 2 GW by March 2026 and capture a 20-25% share of the domestic wind market, The Times of India reports. The firm — a leading wind turbine manufacturer — was acquired by Alfanar Group from its German parent company Senvion GmbH.

Capacity expansion: The company is setting up a new facility in the western Indian state of Gujarat that is expected to be operational by March 2026. Once complete, it will raise Senvion India’s total manufacturing capacity to 2 GW per year, up from the current 1.5 GW. The new plant will complement its blade manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu and nacelle plant in Maharashtra, improving supply chain integration across southern and western India.

Investment + output: The firm has invested about INR 200 mn (USD 23 mn) to expand its Tamil Nadu plant for longer blades measuring up to 90 meters. It reported revenues exceeding INR 2 bn (USD 228 mn) in FY 2024-25 and holds an order book of 600 MW for delivery through August 2026.

Product development: The Rajkot facility will produce next-generation turbines above 4 MW, with blade lengths of up to 95 meters. The company’s 4.2M160 turbine platform, co-developed by Indian and German engineering teams, was first installed in Tamil Nadu in June 2025.

ICYMI: In August 2025, India introduced new wind-turbine manufacturing norms that mandate sourcing key components locally and storing data domestically — moves expected to benefit domestic manufacturers like Senvion India while tightening competition for foreign suppliers, Reuters reports.

Adani Power’s 1.6k MW Jharkhand plant set for domestic market access

Adani’s Godda plant to join Indian grid soon: Adani Power’s 1.6k MW Godda thermal power plant in eastern India’s Jharkhand — which currently exports all its electricity to Bangladesh — will be connected to the country’s national grid by December, The Hindu Businessline reports, citing CEO SB Khyalia. The integration will allow domestic power sales if Bangladesh halts scheduling or defaults on payments under its 25-year power purchase agreement.

Commissioned in 2023 as India’s first private thermal plant power project dedicated solely to exports, Godda has pending dues exceeding USD 500 mn (INR 41.7 bn) from Bangladesh's power utilities. Most dues have now been cleared, with only half a month’s payment pending.

Expansion pipeline: Adani Power is also bidding for 22k MW of thermal capacity across Assam, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and other states, and is developing 6k MW of brownfield projects to be completed between FY 2026-29.

Indian refiners pivot: HPCL turns west as IOC picks up discounted Russian barrels

State-run Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) said it processed only 5% Russian crude in 2Q FY 2026, citing poor economics and tightening US sanctions on Russian entities and shippers, The Economic Times reports. The refiner clarified it is not significantly dependent on Russian oil and will comply with global norms. HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd, a public-private JV refiner, also suspended purchases of Russian oil.

Meanwhile…: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), another state-run refiner, has resumed limited Russian oil purchases, buying five cargoes for December delivery from non-sanctioned entities, Reuters reports. The deals, worth around 3.5 mn barrels of Russian ESPO crude, were secured near parity with Dubai benchmarks for an eastern Indian port. IOC had earlier cancelled up to eight shipments supplied by subsidiaries of sanctioned Russian companies.

India diversifies imports: India’s crude imports from the US surged to about 540k barrels per day as of late October — the highest since 2022 — as refiners steer clear of Russian supplies, the business daily added, citing Kpler data.

With demand from Chinese refiners softening, discounted ESPO barrels have become attractive for Indian buyers, even as New Delhi balances energy security with compliance with Western sanctions.

Air India seeks INR 100 bn support from shareholders Tata Sons, SIA

Air India is seeking about INR 100 bn (USD 1.14 bn) in financial support from its shareholders Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines (SIA) to bolster its engineering and operational capabilities following the June 2025 crash, Bloomberg reports. Tata Sons holds nearly 75%, while SIA owns about 25% of Air India. The proposed support may take the form of an equity infusion or no-interest loan, with discussions currently underway between the two shareholders.

Operational pressures: The request comes as the carrier — acquired by the Tata Group from the Indian government in 2022 — remains unprofitable and behind schedule on achieving operational break-even by FY 2025-26, according to The Hindu Businessline. Air India has faced route restrictions since Pakistan closed its airspace in May and supply-chain issues that reduced international operations by around 15% since mid-year. It also suffered a major reputational setback following the crash of its flight in June.

Singapore Airlines said it continues to work closely with Tata Sons to support Air India’s transformation program as a significant minority stakeholder, providing operational expertise and technical assistance where required. It reaffirmed its commitment to Air India’s post-merge integration and safety-improvement efforts following the Vistara-Air India merger in 2024, The Economic Times reports.

ICYMI: The capital request aligns with Air India’s broader turnaround and modernization drive under the Tata Group. The airline has been overhauling safety and engineering systems since the June 2025 Boeing 787 accident in Ahmedabad, in which over 240 people were killed. SIA has been assisting with operational and maintenance support since then. Following the crash, the airline suspended 83-wide body flights, which are gradually restoring operations following a technical audit.

Ford returns to India manufacturing with powertrain unit in Tamil Nadu

US automaker Ford Motor Company will invest INR 3.25 bn (USD 390 mn) to revive its idle Maraimalainagar plant near Chennai, make it Ford’s first powertrain manufacturing facility outside the US, The Hindu Businessline reports quoting Global Director Martin Evirritt. The 100% export-oriented unit will begin producing high-tech engines by 2029, generating around 600 jobs, company officials told the business daily after signing an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government.

Back in the game: Ford is returning to Indian manufacturing after exiting vehicle production in 2021. The new facility joins its existing engine plant and 12,000 employees in global business operations in Tamil Nadu.

Background: Ford entered India in 1995 through a JV with Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra before becoming a fully owned subsidiary in 1998 — investing heavily in plants in Chennai and Gujarat’s Sanand. In 2021, Ford announced its manufacturing exit in India, citing over USD 2 billion in losses across a decade, but retained its Chennai-based engine export and global business services, as per Reuters.

Newly inked India-US defense pact to reshape Indo-Pacific strategy

India + US enter long-term defence pact: India and the US have inked a 10-year defense framework pact to expand collaboration in technology, intelligence-sharing, and regional security, US Secretary of War Peter Hegseth announced on X. He said the defence ties between two countries have “never been stronger.” The pact was sealed in Kuala Lumpur between Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Hegseth.

Both sides described the framework as a cornerstone for regional stability and deterrence, marking the next phase in the US-India defense partnership first formalized in 2016. It lends policy direction to the full spectrum of bilateral defense cooperation as both countries stay committed to an open and rules-bound Indo-Pacific region, Hegseth said.
