RBL delivers strong earnings debut after Emirates NBD takeover

The quarterly results point to resilient earnings and rapid corporate loan growth as the UAE lender begins integrating RBL Bank into its regional banking network

Indian lender RBL Bank reported a 27% y-o-y increase in 1Q net income to INR 2.5 bn (USD 26.3 mn), according to an earnings release. Net revenue gained 6.4% y-o-y to 47.9 bn (USD 498.5 mn). This is RBL’s first complete earnings since Dubai’s Emirates NBD completed the acquisition of a controlling 60% stake in the bank.

By the numbers: Net advances grew 23% y-o-y, led by a 38% jump in wholesale lending, including corporate loans — likely to be a key focus area as Emirates NBD looks to capitalize on growing India-GCC trade and investment flows.

Integration begins: RBL proposed appointing senior Emirates NBD executives, including Shayne Keith Nelson and Patrick John Sullivan, to its board as the new owner begins integrating the bank. It also approved plans to raise up to INR 100 bn (USD 1 bn) through debt and increase its borrowing limit to INR 400 bn. The bank has already retired INR 105 bn (USD 1.09 bn) of high-cost borrowings and raised USD 150 mn through foreign currency non-resident deposits, with plans to tap Emirates NBD’s customer network to expand cross-border deposits and trade finance.

Why it matters: The results offer an early look at the business Emirates NBD has acquired. Robust corporate loan growth reinforces the strategic rationale for the acquisitions, giving the UAE lender greater exposure to India’s expanding corporate credit market.
