What we're tracking today

TODAY: Shanghai-New York container shipping rates are frustrating shippers

Good morning, wonderful people. Today’s news cycle is predominantly led by aviation, particularly as Dubai’s flagship carrier Emirates’ cargo arm put in a USD 1 bn order for five Boeing 777 freighters.

^^ We have all the details on this story and more in the news well, below.

WATCH THIS SPACE-

#1- The EU and UK are making a “call to action” to target oil tankers that Russia uses to skirt international sanctions, Bloomberg reports, citing sources familiar with the matter. The measures could potentially include enforcing more checks and sanctions on Russian shadow vessels. Several governments plan to share information about the Russian fleet “to coordinate our responses to the risks posed by its ships and facilitators, and to work with the private sector and other maritime stakeholders to address the threat,” the outlet reports, citing a draft statement by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

REFRESHER- The EU slapped the 12th package of sanctions against Russia last December, including notification rules for the sale of tankers to any third country. The aim of the sanctions is increased transparency of secondhand carrier sale and export, tightening compliance rules implemented to reduce attempts to circumvent the pre-existing G7 price cap on Russian oil. The US cracked down on oil shippers for violating Russia sanctions last October. The G7 cap bans Western corporations from supplying maritime services for Russian seaborne oil exports sold above USD 60 / bbl.

#2- US importers are frustrated by the rise in container shipping rates from Shanghai to New York to USD 10k per 40 ft container, Reuters reports. Drewry’s World Container Index (WCI) for shipping hit USD 9.3k on 11 July per 40 ft container, which is more than double the rate from February. Industry insiders attribute the rise to the diversions away from the Suez Canal as a result of the Houthi attacks, which cause shipment delays and shortages that drive up the cost of maritime transport.

MARKET WATCH-

Baltic index takes a dip: The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk sea freight index — which tracks rates for the capesize, panamax, and supramax vessel segments — was down 0.2% to 1,993 on Monday, weighed down by low capesize rates, Reuters reports. Capesize declined 1% to 3,263 points, while panamax index inched up 1.4% to 1,702 points. The smaller supramax index increased 0.3% to 1,368 points.

Oil prices dipped on Tuesday amid growing concerns over a demand slump in China, Reuters reports. Brent crude futures dipped 1.3% to USD 83.74 / bbl, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell 1.4% to USD 80.76 / bbl.

Emirates SkyCargo places USD 1 bn order for five Boeing 777 freighters

Emirates’ cargo arm Emirates SkyCargo has placed a USD 1 bn order for five Boeing 777 freighters, slated for immediate delivery between 2025 and 2026, according to a statement. The airline plans to retire older freighters as it receives the new deliveries.

Boosting capacity: Once operational, the new orders will boost the airline’s main deck cargo capacity by 30%. “Demand for our world-class product and services is growing exponentially,” said Emirates Chairman and CEO Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The investment puts the airline's total order book at 315 wide-body aircraft.

More expansions in the cards: The carrier also plans to add 10 additional 777-300ERs to its fleet, which are currently being converted into freighters, the statement said. The airfreight division plans to further increase its capacity with 15 freighters by 2025 through new deliveries and its freighter conversion program. It also aims to boost its fleet to more than 300 aircraft by mid-2030, while planning to add 20 new destinations to its freighter network. The airline ordered in November 90 of Boeing's biggest aircraft, the 777X, and an additional five 787s at a value of USD 52 bn.

A tumultuous relationship: Emirates President Tim Clark said last month that the airline was “extremely exasperated” with delivery delays from Boeing. The planemaker will likely need some five years to get out of its current slump and won’t succeed in regaining market share across all aircraft variants, Clark said. The delay has prompted Emirates to expand the retrofitting of its Boeing 777 fleet, resulting in a cost increase from USD 2 bn to USD 3.5 bn.

REMEMBER- Between losses, production delays, and a lawsuit, Boeing has faced an onslaught of bad press sparked by an Alaska Airlines incident in January.

Sohar Port and Freezone breaks ground on USD 3.5 mn waste management facility

Construction starts on Sohar waste management facility: Elite Hazardous Waste Management Solution has broken ground on a USD 3.5 mn hazardous waste management facility in Oman’s Sohar Port and Freezone, according to a statement. The facility will handle recycling, treatment, and disposal of hazardous waste at the port. The project looks to develop Oman’s circular economy and industrial waste management capacity.

(** Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links to our background and outside sources.)

Details: The facility, spanning 10k sqm, will leverage state-of-the-art and sustainable technology to limit carbon emissions, according to the statement. It will use pollution control equipment to safely treat industrial waste, including rubber and oil sludge. The project will process some 40 tons per day initially, which will be increased to 80 tons per day within its first year of operation. Output from the facility will include heavy oil for slow-moving machinery and low-contamination carbon dust for road construction or producing cement.

What they said: “The new facility represents a pivotal step in promoting a circular economy. By incorporating advanced technology and adhering to rigorous environmental standards, we enhance our waste management capabilities while contributing to Oman Vision 2040’s circular economy objectives,” said Sohar freezone CEO and Sohar Port DCEO Omar AL Mahrizi.

A slew of green projects at Sohar: Sohar port announced last month that it will start using biofuel bunkering in tugboat operations after experimenting with B20 — an 80% diesel and 20% biofuel mix — at Tug Sohar. The port and freezone inked a land lease agreement in February with Starsun Sohar to set up a USD 3 mn lead acid battery recycling plant in the freezone. Sohar also inked a land lease agreement in January with Oman-based Green Data City (GDC) for a data computing center worth some USD 210 mn.

Global cotton prices tumble as supply rises in swing with inflation rates

Cotton prices are down amid a spike in production from Brazil, which has overtaken the US as world’s biggest cotton exporter, the Financial Times reports. ICE cotton futures dropped below USD 0.69 a pound in July, the lowest level since October 2020. Brazil exported a total of 12.4 mn bales of cotton in the 2023-24 harvest season, overtaking the US’ 11.8 mn bales, says FT, citing data from an US Department of Agriculture (USDA) report (pdf). “Brazil has the cheapest cotton in the world. We produce almost 2 tonnes of link per hectare, which is not heard of elsewhere,” Brazilian cotton farm manager Carlos Alberto Moresco told the news outlet.

Demand for cotton has tumbled as cost-conscious shoppers opt for more affordable fabrics, further squeezing the market. A sharp rise in interest rates have pushed shoppers towards polyester and other petroleum-based fabric products, says the news outlet. “Until we get world cotton demand back up, we’re not going to get prices coming back up,” said National Cotton Council of America’s economic and policy analyst VP Jody Campiche.

Who is the region’s top exporter? Turkey exported 1.3 mn bales of cotton in 2023-24, taking the lead as the region’s top cotton exporter, and is forecasted to be the world's fifth largest exporter, according to a USDA report (pdf). Turkey’s exports are rising as domestic use falls due to inflationary pressures in the country.
