China’s increasingly relying on homegrown Huawei AI chips

Microsoft is using its own chips and Anthropic is fighting copycats

China’s homegrown AI chips: Nvidia’s share of China’s AI chip market fell to 34% in H1 of 2026, while Huawei supplied 28% of the nation’s chips, Reuters reports.

Watch the trend: The results suggest China is increasingly becoming self-reliant when it comes to AI. The US’s fault? Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang blamed tight US export rules for handing the Chinese chip market to Huawei.

More bad news for Nvidia? Microsoft will make its own Maia chips the main engine for running its AI models, the company says via CNBC. It will still buy some chips from Nvidia and AMD, though.

Copycats beware: Anthropic says it has made it much harder for rivals to copy its Claude AI model, saying early results show its defenses cut the data harvested from the model by would-be imitators by 90-99%, Reuters reports. One of the alleged copycats is Chinese AI company Z.ai. The Gulf angle: Aramco’s venture arm, Prosperity7, has backed Z.ai.

Meta joins the big leagues: Meta released Muse Wonder, its first frontier AI model, which it claims matches the best models from Anthropic and OpenAI, CNBC reports.
