THE BIG LOGISTICS STORY- The UAE has issued amendments to a law capping heavy trucks operating on the country’s roads to 65 tonnes, in a bid to promote safety and safeguard the UAE’s road infrastructure. The amendments will come into effect on 1 October, but vehicle owners will get a grace period of four months before being penalized.

Jordanian port workers injur ed in Storm Daniel dust up: Following the havoc wreaked by Storm Daniel, 20 port workers at Jordan’s Aqaba outlet were hospitalized with breathing problems as dust particle measurements rose to 200 microgram per cubic meter, the National cites a local official as saying. Workers at Aqaba have been ordered to halt work as a precaution, the outlet adds.
And p orts reopen in Libya : In Libya, major oil ports Brega, Es Sidra, Ras Lanuf, and Zueitina in Libya have reopened after shutting down on Saturday due to the storm, Reuters reports, citing a statement from port agent Al Omran International Maritime Agencies. Flash floods have caused a lot of damage in Libya, destroying several towns and causing a “huge” death toll, a senior Libyan official told the UN, the National writes.
Morocco sets up central warehouse for earthquake aid distribution: Morocco’s Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity has established a warehouse in Marrakech to collect aid for victims of the devastating earthquake that hit the country last week, Morocco World News reports.The partners are receiving, organizing, and preparing shipments of aid for affected areas, which are donated by citizens and civil society organizations across Morocco, the outlet reports. The central warehouse will supply local warehouses in the Marrakech/Safi region, from where they will be delivered to those affected.
DP World has been announced as a “principal pathway partner” for COP28, according to a company press release. The move comes as part of the logistics giant’s decarbonization drive, as it looks to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 and net zero carbon by 2050. “Our work with COP28 and other industry peers underscores our commitment to combating climate change and fostering sustainable global trade,” Group CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said.

Adnoc guns for more trade with Europe: Emirati oil giant Abu Dhabi National Oil Company is looking to expand from its traditional Asian market and step up energy contracts with Europe and Africa — with a particular focus on liquified natural gas (LNG), an unnamed source told Bloomberg yesterday. Over the coming year, Adnoc is targeting two to three long-term contracts to buy LNG, and the same number of supply agreements with customers, in a bid to replace Russia as Europe’s main energy supplier, up its trading operations, and capture more of the value chain.
Oman’s new Duqm oil refinery has shipped its first diesel cargo as part of test runs: Oman’s new Duqm oil refinery has shipped its first 35k tons of diesel cargo to a destination in East Africa, Al Arabiya reported citing trade sources and ship tracking data. The 230k barrel per day facility is 50:50 owned between Oman’s OQ Group and Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI) and has been running trials since halfway through this year, sources told the news agency. Work at the refinery was 98.9% complete by July’s end, KPI CEO Shafi al Ajmi reportedly said. The refinery is expected to start commissioning soon and ramp up capacity within six months.

The Libyan Moroccan Forum for Trade and Business kicked off this week in Tangiers, Morocco and will run till today. The event will be held in partnership with the Libyan Export Development Centre and with support from the Libyan Economy and Trade Ministry. The event aims to connect Libyan and Moroccan suppliers, exporters, chambers of commerce, and freezones with Maghreb and African markets, General Manager of Outbox Team event management company Yassine Bousrewil told the Libya Herald. The event will bring together some 100 business and commercial leaders from Libya to enhance trade and economic exchange between the two countries.
London International Shipping Week (LISW) kicked off this week and will run till Friday i n London, UK. The event is held under the themes of compliance, decarbonization, business and technology, security, and skills. The week-long cluster event will include seminars, conferences, and product launches, bringing together leaders and professionals from the global shipping industry, including ship owners, brokers, traders, regulators, and other stakeholders to network and share expertise and knowledge on the maritime sector.
The Belt and Road Summit kicked off yesterday and will run till today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Emirati news agency WAM reports. The event, hosted by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Hong Kong Trade Development Council, will bring together government officials and business leaders from countries and regions alon — and beyond — the Belt and Road to cooperate and explore potential business avenues. The summit will have Middle East-focused sessions with the aim of exploring cooperation in urban transport, infrastructure projects, renewable energy, logistics, and technology.
The Sustainable Transportation and Legacy for Generations Conference and Exhibition, which is organized by Qatar’s Transport Ministry and sponsored by Qatar Airways Group, Mwani Qatar, and QNB, will take place on 17-18 September at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, Gulf Times reports. The event will cover transportation sector trends, strategies for eco-friendly transit systems, and Qatar's role in global aviation. The conference will include six panel discussions featuring over 20 speakers from various transportation entities.
The Global Trade and Supply Chain Summit is taking place on 19-20 September at the Address Dubai Marina Hotel, UAE. The event, hosted by Economist Impact, will bring together some 500+ business and supply chain leaders, high level government representatives, and policymakers to discuss the implications of trade policy, business logistics, supply chain diversification from China, sustainability, product traceability, digital trade, customs compliance and evolution, supply chain resilience, and trade in emerging regions, among other topics.
The Saudi Maritime Congress will take place at Dhahran Expo in Dammam, Saudi Arabia on 20-21 September. The event will bring together regional and international professionals from the maritime, shipping, and logistics sectors to meet, network, and do business with some 120 leading maritime exhibitors.
The Engineering Export Council of Egypt (EEC) will lead a trade mission consisting of 22 Egyptian companies to Iraq from 23 to 29 September. The delegation will tour Erbil and Baghdad. The participating companies, which operate across various sectors of the engineering industry, will be looking to secure export agreements with the Iraqi market.
Shaping the Future of Shipping Summit , organized by the International Chamber of Shipping, will take place on 9 December in the UAE. The event will bring together governments and leaders in energy, maritime, and all parts of the supply chain to discuss plans to address climate change and help transition the industry towards sustainability.
