What we're tracking today

TODAY: Damietta Tahya Misr update + DP World heads to Malaysia

Good morning, friends. We apologize for the delay in today’s issue due to unforeseen technical circumstances. It’s a big day for ports with a couple of key updates from the region and beyond. We also have a detailed breakdown of what’s happened so far in Agility’s lined up debut on the ADX.

WATCH THIS SPACE-

#1- Bahrain is in the search for investors to fund a vital pipeline that transports crude from Saudi, Bloomberg reports, citing sources it says are familiar with the matter. The pipeline, which connects Saudi oil processing facilities at Abqaiq with Bahrain’s Bapco refiner, has the capacity to transport up to 350k barrels of oil per day. The sources said the Bahraini government could raise a few hundred mn USD from the sale to investors.

#2- The design plan for the USD 35 bn newpassengerterminal at Al Maktoum International Airport includes a “massive leap” in aviation technology, including AI and electric aircraft to cut down on travel time, plus investments in solar power, waste treatment, and biofuels, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths told The National on Monday. Investment in advanced technology solutions come as air travel demand puts “extraordinary pressure” on existing infrastructure and airline resources, with the number of air travelers set to double to 8 bn annually by 2040.

REFRESHER- The expanded airport is set to be the world’s largest, hosting over 260 mn passengers, handling 12 mn tons of annual cargo, accommodating around 400 aircraft gates, and featuring five parallel runways. It will be five times larger than Dubai International Airport (DXB), with plans to transfer all operations from DXB within 10 years.

#3- The G7’s Russia oil price cap has shown little success since its introduction nearly two years ago, Reuters reports, citing a P&I Club statement submitted to a UK parliamentary hearing this week. The price cap has pushed more vessels to join the so-called shadow fleet, said the group of 12 marine third-party liability ins.ers which covers 87% of global sea tonnage. “The oil price cap appears increasingly unenforceable as more ships and associated services move into this parallel trade. We estimate around 800 tankers have already left the International Group Clubs as a direct result of the introduction of the oil price cap,” the newswire cites the group as saying.

Russian state-owned tanker fleet operator Sovcomflot has renamed at least four tankers listed under US sanctions in defiance, Bloomberg reports. The vessels have also re-flagged from Gabon to Russia. Sovcomflot was hit with US sanctions in February on the grounds it violated the G7-mandated price cap and other “deceptive activity.” Tankers routinely change their names after being sanctioned in order to separate themselves from listings on databases, but the ships remain identifiable by numbers registered with the International Maritime Organization, Bloomberg added. Sovcomflot’s giant tanker fleet — capable of hauling about 700k barrels of oil — has helped keep Russia’s oil moving despite sanctions, according to data from Clarkson Research Services.

ON A RELATED NOTE:Turkey’s exports to Russia fell by a third y-o-y to USD 2.1 bn in 1Q 2024, The Financial Times reports. The sharp drop comes on the back of US pressure, with Biden issuing an executive order in December allowing the Treasury Department to hit Turkish banks with secondary sanctions if they mediate trade supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine, the FT said. The US and EU have lobbied Ankara to curb its trade with Moscow, which saw a steep rise after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Turkey’s exports to Russia saw some recovery in March, despite still being lower y-o-y, indicating that Turkish banks have found ways to reroute payments and remain compliant with sanctions, the FT added.

DISRUPTION WATCH-

Houthis carried out more attacks on commercial vessels and two US destroyers in the Red Sea yesterday, Reuters reports. The group targeted Portugal-flagged MSC Orion, a container ship sailing between Portugal’s Sines and Oman’s Salalah, on the basis of being operated by Israeli-backed Zodiac Maritime, the newswire reports, citing LSEG data. The Houthis also targeted a commercial vessel dubbed Cyclades and two US destroyers, a Houthi spokesman said yesterday. This comes on the heels of an attack earlier this week on a Malta-flagged container ship enroute from Djibouti to Jeddah.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards naval force is warning that it will retaliate by seizing tankers if more Iranian oil tankers are seized as part of efforts to enforce US sanctions,Iran International reports, citing statements by the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards naval force Alireza Tangsiri. Iran hijacked a tanker in January, a year after the US seized the same tanker — dubbed Suez Rajan at the time — in a bid to enforce sanctions.

Iran’s naval forces will also be escorting their country’s ships in the Gulf of Aden and Atlantic ocean, Tasnim reports, citing statements by Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani.

MARKET WATCH-

#1- Oil prices fell for the third day in a row this morning on the back of US crude production ramping up and renewed hope for a ceasefire agreement pending in Gaza, Reuters reports. Brent crude futures for July were down 0.5% to USD 85.86 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures for June fell 0.6% to USD 81.40 a barrel, the newswire said. US crude production in February rose to 13.5 mn barrels per day (bpd), up from 12.58 mn bpd in January and marking the largest increase seen since October 2021, the newswire added, citing the Energy Information Administration.

#2- Baltic index dips, yanked by weaker rates across all vessel segments: The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk sea freight index — which tracks rates for the capesize, panamax, and supramax vessel segments — was down 2.2% to 1,684 points on Monday, marking its sixth consecutive fall, Reuters reports. The larger capesize tumbled 4.2% to 2,080 points, its lowest since 2 February, while panamax fell 1.1% to 1,858 points. The smaller supramax segment also shed 3 points to 1,492 points, ending a 14-session winning spree.

Superstructure work will commence at Damietta’s Tahya Misr 1 container terminal

Superstructure work set to commence at Tahya Misr terminal: Damietta Alliance Container Terminal (DACT) and Modern Engineering Pioneers (MEP) inked an agreement to implement the superstructure of Tahya Misr 1 container terminal in Damietta, according to a statement. The terminal infrastructure work is 100% complete with the terminal set to have a capacity of 3.5 mn containers and a 1.97k meter berth that is 18 meters deep, the statement said. No investment value was disclosed for the latest agreement.

What is superstructure work?Superstructure work in ports usually refers to surface arrangements including paving, fixed equipment including warehouses and terminal buildings, public utility installation, and mobile equipment needed for transport services.

It’s all part of the bigger picture: The new terminal is set to boost container handling capacity at Egypt’s Damietta Port by 3.5 mn containers and is a component of the Tanta – Mansoura – Damietta logistics corridor that looks to promote Damietta Port as a regional hub for transit trade, Egypt’s transport minister Kamel Al Wazir said. The initiative also falls in line with Egypt’s efforts to attract multinational carriers to invest and manage Egypt’s ports, while also boosting collaborations with local and international private sector players, Al Wazir added.

Background: Egypt’s Tahya Misr 1 container terminal — one of three terminals planned in the Damietta port development project — will kick off operations in April 2025. The remaining two container terminals are slated for completion by 2027.

About DACT: DACT is a consortium of European and Egyptian private players that was established as a special purpose vehicle to manage and operate Damietta Port’s second container terminal, under a 30-year concession inked with Damietta Port Authority (DPA) in mid-2022. The JV is 39% owned by Germany’s Hapag Lloyd, with Eurogate and Contship Italia each owning 29.5%. Two Egyptian private sector firms — Middle East Logistics & Consultants and CREW Egypt — hold a 1% stake each.

DP World set to manage Sapangar Bay Container Port

DP World inked a partnership agreement with Malaysia’s Suria Capital Holdings subsidiary Sabah Ports to jointly manage Sapangar Bay Container Port (SBCP), according to a press release. The move comes in a bid to establish SBCP as a regional trade hub for the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

The details: The agreement will see DP World support efforts to boost SBCP’s container handling capacity from 500k TEUs to 1.25 mn TEUs by 2025. The pair will also invest in improvement to SBCP’s cold chain storage and transport capabilities to increase the export of Sabah’s agricultural products to international markets opening growth pathways, the statement notes. Investments will also be drawn in to improve operational efficiency and boost port connectivity via optimized terminal workflows and digitalization.

Background: The latest partnership builds upon a long-term collaboration agreement inked by DP World and Sabah Ports in 2019, where both parties agreed to co-develop solutions to boost SBCP’s competitiveness and create cargoes in Sabah’s hinterlands, the statement added. Long term, the partnership looks to boost land and sea connectivity in Sabah, curb transit times and costs, and improve standards across Sabah’s supply chains.

Prime location: Sabah is located within a five day sailing radius of markets containing 2.2 bn potential customers accounting for over 40% of global manufacturing output, the statement notes. The area is also a source for timber, oil, and contains fisheries which were the second largest contributor to Sabah’s GDP last year.

Agility gets ADX green light for direct listing

Kuwait’s Agility will list its shares on ADX this week: Kuwaiti logistics outfit Agility received approval from the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) to move forward with a technical listing of its operations and assets management unit, Agility Global, on the Abu Dhabi bourse, it said in a disclosure (pdf). The company’s shares will begin trading tomorrow.

Technical listing? A technical listing means the company’s shares have been made tradeable on the bourse, without an offering of equity (primary or secondary) arranged by existing shareholders prior to the listing. This simply makes it possible for shareholders pre-transaction to start offering shares for sale to other investors via the ADX.

The share price is determined based on supply and demand in a technical listing, though Agility has set its reference price at AED 0.37, it said in the disclosure. The book value of Agility Global shares is near AED 1.88 per share, bringing the company’s total book value to AED 19.6 bn.

Background: Agility revealed plans to list Agility Global on the ADX last month, after shareholders gave prior approval to the listing of shares of Agility assets back in 2023. Agility’s board also approved an in-kind dividend distribution of some KWD 800 mn (USD 2.6 bn), representing shares forming 49% of the issued share capital of Agility Global. Following the distribution, Agility — which is listed both on the DFM and the Kuwait Stock Exchange — will remain the controlling shareholder with a 51% stake in Agility Global. Agility will also continue to consolidate Agility Global’s accounts.

What Agility Global does: The wholly owned unit manages company operations and assets for Agility subsidiary Menzies Aviation, the company’s investment in Tristar Transport, operations of Agility Logistics Parks outside of Kuwait, and its merger with DSV, according to the statement.

Another Agility IPO coming soon? Agility might also sell another subsidiary — Dubai-based Tristar — after plans to list the company on the Dubai Financial Market stalled back in 2021 due to a lack of investor demand. The company had planned to sell 24% of its shares in the IPO.

Trump’s tariff proposal might result in a "free for all" in the global trading system,

US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s plan to raise tariffs on imports could trigger a “free for all” in the global trading system, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala warns, according to Bloomberg. Trump’s proposal would impose a 60% tariff on imports from China and 10% on imports from the rest of the world. Okonjo-Iweala called on WTO members to “keep a cool head and not retaliate so we can preserve the world trading system.”

A new wave of car imports is expected to hit ports following an anticipated spike in the number of car-carrying ships, chief executive at shipping giant Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lasse Kristoffersen told the Financial Times. Operators have made orders for 198 new vessels that are due to arrive by the end of 2027, which will increase car-carrying capacity by around 42%, says the newswire. Congestion is likely to increase at terminals since port capacity is unlikely to expand at the same rate, Kristoffersen said. “We think the next big bottleneck will be terminals and distribution,” he said.

On Your Way Out

Amazon’s very own Schrödinger's Cat

A cat accidentally shipped herself from Utah to an Amazon warehouse center in California by cozying up in a box her parents marked for return, local news outlet KSL-TV reports. Amazon employees were startled to find her next to several pairs of boots in the oversized box shipped out for return the previous week. “I didn’t believe it at first and thought it was a prank,” pet owner Carrier Clark said, “I ran to tell my husband that Galena was found and we broke down upon realizing that she must have jumped into an oversized box that we shipped out the previous Wednesday.”

A stroke of luck: Galena survived because the return box was split open on one seam giving her oxygen and weather temperatures was thankfully mild, so the cat didn’t overheat or freeze.
