MARKET WATCH-

Mideast-Asia oil shipping rates rebound, but analysts say it’s unlikely to last: Output supply cuts led by Saudi Arabia are expected to cap oil shipping freight rates for Middle Eastern crude oil to Asia for the remainder of the year, despite a recent rebound from a 19-month low in September, Reuters cites industry sources as saying. With Saudi crude exports rebounding back to July levels this month as Saudi Arabia fulfills its October deliveries, VLCC rates had also improved, but they are unlikely to meet the levels of 4Q 2022 as supply cuts begin to take effect and as demand from China eases, the outlet cites Oil Brokerage Global Head of Shipping Research Anoop Singh as saying.

China’s oil exports are expected to rise in October: China is expected to experience a surge in fuel products next month as state-owned refiners are taking advantage of lucrative margins and a recovery in international flights, which has led to heightened Western demand, according to analysts and industry sources cited by Reuters. Saudi cabinet gives thumbs up to railway link with Kuwait

Saudi Arabia’s cabinet greenlit a S audi-Kuwait rail link project on Tuesday, Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reports. The Saudi Transport and Logistics Services Ministry had been tasked to negotiate with Kuwait for a draft agreement for the project, Arab Times reports.

About the project: The railway, which will be used by freight and passenger trains, is a single track line spanning 111km from the Nuwaiseeb Port on Saudi Arabia’s northern border with Kuwait to Al Shadadiyah in Kuwait.

Background: Saudi Arabia’s state-owned national railway firm Saudi Railway Company and the Saudi Transport General Authority in May tapped French transport and mobility engineering company Systra to complete the feasibility study for the project. The study will also cover the passenger terminal, cargo yard, and border facility at Saudi Arabia, and will see Systra provide estimates for the costs of construction, operations, and maintenance.

REMEMBER- GCC countries are working on a 2.1k km railway linking the six member states together. The proposed project is expected to cost over USD 15 bn, according to Al Weeam. Although the project was initially ratified in 2009, progress had been delayed for several years, with feasibility and traffic studies just recently being completed. The GCC Railway Authority is currently coordinating with each country to ensure that they follow uniform standards and guidelines in building the railway.

Qatar, South Korea eye boosting shipbuilding, energy supply chains + Iraq vows to look for resolution for Khor Abdullah dispute with Kuwait

Qatar and South Korea eye stronger energy supply chains: South Korea’s Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Bang Moon Kyu met with Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad AlKaabi in Seoul to discuss strengthening their energy and shipbuilding supply chains, according to a ministry statement. The pair discussed pursuing new partnerships in renewable energy, hydrogen and ammonia production and use, technology, and peer-to-peer exchanges, the statement said.

Iraq want s to overcome dispute with Kuwait over marine navigation: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani said Iraq is ready to resolve the dispute with Kuwait over marine navigation in the Khor Abdullah waterway, according to a statement by the PM’s office. The PM said the country is looking for a viable solution that aligns with both its constitution and international law, according to Reuters.

REMEMBER- Earlier this month, the Supreme Court in Iraq ruled the 1993 agreement governing the waterway was unconstitutional because it should have been ratified by a two-thirds majority of the Iraqi parliament rather than a simple majority. GCC countries, along with the US, have since been calling for a clear resolution to address the potential negative repercussions of the annulment of the law.

Global trade falls at fastest pace since covid-19 + Sustainable aviation fuels’ prices are not going down anytime soon, IATA chief says

Global trade takes biggest hit since the pandemic: Global trade contracted at its quickest rate since 2020 in July, according to figures picked by the Financial Times. The World Trade Monitor, published by the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, shows that volumes declined 3.2% y-o-y during the month, accelerating from June when trade fell 2.4%. This is the most severe fall since mid-2020 when global supply chains were suffering through the wave of covid-19 lockdowns across the world.

Driving the trend: Sharply higher interest rates across the world, higher inflation, and increased domestic spending on services post-lockdown.

A gloomier forecast: The figures are likely to add to the concerns that a slowdown in global growth could accelerate in the coming months. Industry experts anticipate trade volumes to continue to weaken: S&P Global’s PMIs for the US, the eurozone and the UK have all signaled a sharp contraction in August and September.

S AF prices likely to stay high, IATA chief says: Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) prices are more likely to stay more expensive than kerosene even in the face of large-scale production kicks, but the cost won’t deter airlines from meeting their carbon emissions targets, Reuters quotes International Air Transport Association(IATA) head Willie Walsh as saying during a conference. “SAF will always be priced at a premium to kerosene,” and prices will only come down when deliveries reach a large scale compared to the “tiny volumes now,” Walsh said.

Amazon faces major antitrust challenge

Amazon is in hot water over alleged monopolistic practices: US antitrust regulator the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 17 states are suing e-commerce giant Amazon for alleged monopolistic practices, the Associated Press (AP) reports. The allegations include that Amazon is overcharging sellers, inflating prices and stifling competition, according to the AP. Claimants are asking the court for a permanent injunction that would ban Amazon from practices that violate state and federal antitrust laws and ease “monopolistic control to restore competition,” according to statements carried by AP.

This is big: The lawsuit comes on the heels of a multi-year probe into Amazon’s practices and represents the most serious legal challenge faced by the outfit in its 30-year history, AP also said.

The response: “If the FTC gets its way, the result would be fewer products to choose from, higher prices, slower deliveries for consumers, and reduced options for small businesses — the opposite of what antitrust law is designed to do,” Amazon General Counsel David Zapolsky said in a prepared statement cited by the AP.
