The phase will involve the demolition and removal of eight berths, which will be followed by phases involving the dredging and deepening of the basins up to a 14.5 meter draft and the building of sidewalks. The project will take up to 3 years to complete, according to the statement.

Russian coal shipments are driving up demand for capesize vessels: Capesize freight rates are in for a wave of upside volatility as Russian coal shipments become redirected to Western countries on the back of Western sanctions on Russian energy, MSI’s Associate Director Plamen Natzkoff writes for Splash247. Some 25% of Russian coal exports are now served by the capesize market, up from approximately 10% previously, as exports are rerouted to new destinations around 4k km away from the country, including China, India and Turkey. This is nearly double the distance that Russian coal exports took in 2018-2019, which averaged around 2-2.5km, Natzkoff writes.

M&A Watch

Is AD Ports rivaling QIA’s bid for Egyptian cargo handling firms?

Is ADP eyeing stakes in Egyptian cargo handling firms? Abu Dhabi Ports (ADP) has reportedly submitted an initial offer to acquire a controlling stake in state-owned Egyptian firms Port Said Container and Cargo Handling (PSCCHC) and Damietta Container and Handling (DCHC), Al Mal quotes sources close to the matter as saying. The bid would rival Qatar Investment Authority’s investment arm Maha Capital Partners’ ongoing negotiations with the company.

Background: The negotiations with Qatar have stalled over the size of the stake Maha Capital wants to acquire, with the Egyptian state reluctant to cede control of the companies.Qatar had inked an MoU to invest in Egypt’s port infrastructure, while also pledging to invest USD 5 bn here to help shield us from the fallout from the war in Ukraine.

Details are vague: It’s not clear how big of a stake AD Ports is eyeing in the two companies, or how much it is willing to pay.

The company has big plans for the Egyptian firms, if the acquisition goes through: ADP wants to help the firms raise their production capacity and develop their operations, the sources are quoted as saying.

What’s next: The offer will be presented to the board of directors of the Holding Company for Maritime Transport, the parent firm of the two companies, sources told Al Mal. ADP revealed to the source that negotiations have reached advanced stages.

ADP is a big investor in Egypt: Just earlier this week, ADP signed a concession agreement to develop and operate a container terminal at Egypt’s Safaga Port for USD 200 mn. ADP has also signed two 15 year agreements collectively worth USD 33 mn, to develop cement terminals at Al Arish Port and West Port Said Port. Last year, the group also acquired a 70% stake in Egyptian shipping and logistics firm International Associated Cargo Carrier for USD 140 mn.

Agility will get USD 1.65 bn in settlement money from Iraq’s Korek Telecom and Sirwan Barzani

The breakdown: IH will be getting USD 1.329 bn, while USD 318.7 mn will go to IT.

What happened? The original claim was filed by Kuwait's Agility and France’s Orange with the Dubai-based tribunal in March 2018. It accused Korek Telecom and Barzani of bribing and corrupting Iraqi regulators in order to reach a wrongful decision of expropriating Agility’s subsidiary and affiliate’s holdings in Korek Telecom. The Tribunal agreed to this, and to the claim that Barzani had “breached his fiduciary obligations by engaging in multiple acts of self-dealing and misconduct, causing harm to the claimants,” according to the statement.

Background: A rulingby Iraqi regulators in March 2019 had stripped Kuwait’s Agility and France’s Orange of their 44% stake in Korek Telecom which they had held since 2011, and diverted the stake to a group of three investors which included Barzani.
