What we're tracking today

TODAY: A new food air corridor is coming to the UAE + Elite acquires LogX

Good morning, nice people. There are developments in cargo handling emerging from the UAE this morning and we have all the latest on how continued Red Sea disruptions will hit company earnings this year.

WATCH THIS SPACE-

#1- New shipping service comes to King Abdul Aziz Port: Qatar Navigation (Milaha) is adding a new shipping service — Upper Gulf Express (UGX) — to Saudi Arabia’s King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam from tomorrow, according to a statement. The service will connect the port to Sohar, Jebel Ali, Hamad Port, Shuwaikh Port, and Umm Qasr Port, with two weekly 1k TEU trips.

#2- Bahrain International Airport is set to open its air cargo village soon,

Al Ayam reports, citing CEO of Bahrain Airport Company Mohammed Yousef Al-Binfalah. The project spans an area of 25k square meters north of the airport and includes 10 warehouses.

#3- United Airlines is calling on the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to block a codeshare agreement between Saudia and Kuwait Airways, Simpleflying reports, citing a document filed with the Department of Transportation (DOT). The airline is asking that the DOT’s approval be contingent on the KSA General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) approving United's own agreement with Emirates to operate flights between the US and KSA. United says GACA has ignored numerous requests submitted since May, according to the outlet. The codeshare agreement between United and Emirates would grant customers of either airline access to more than 100 destinations.

ON A RELATED NOTE- Iraqi airline Fly Baghdad was forced to cancel several of its flights from Baghdad International Airport earlier this week following sanctions imposed on the airline by the US Department of the Treasury, Shafaq News reports. The airline and its CEO Basheer Abdulkadhim Alwan al-Shabbani were subjected to sanctions for allegedly delivering weapons, fighters, and money to Iran-aligned militias in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, according to a US Treasury Department statement released on Monday.

The Iraqi carrier has denounced the sanctions, saying they are “not based on any material or moral evidence,” Reuters reported Fly Baghdad as saying in a statement Monday. “The company will resort to the legal method to demand material and moral compensation,” the airline said, adding that the decision was based on “misleading and unreal information.”

#4- Greek shipping company Empire Navigation looks to see progress on the release of sailors aboard the St Nikolas seized by Iran, following the release of a cadet and a meeting between the Filipino ambassador and the 18 remaining crewmen, according to a statement released last Friday.

The Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, loaded with Iraqi crude bound for Turkey, was seized by Iran on 11 January,Reuters reported last week. The move came in a tit-for-tat for the US seizure of the same vessel last year — dubbed Suez Rajan at the time — in a step to enforce sanctions, the newswire said.

#5- India is set to ask for concessions from the EU to allow it to align its forthcoming national carbon market scheme with the bloc’s emissions trading system, implemented in January, Bloomberg reports, citing sources with knowledge of the matter. India wants to integrate credits from a local fossil fuel tax with the EU's emissions allowance, meaning the bloc would recognize energy auditors approved by the Indian government. The move would result in a tax exemption for small and medium-sized Indian enterprises. India plans to raise the issue of the potential impact of the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism on Indian industries during the upcoming trade agreement negotiations on 19 February.

MARKET WATCH-

#1- Oil prices dropped on Tuesday, wiping off some gains from the previous day,as traders factored mixed signals from rising supply in Libya and Norway against geopolitical turmoil and outages in the US, Reuters reports. Brent crude dropped 0.74% to USD 79.47 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell 0.72% to USD 74.22 a barrel, with trading seeing Brent fall below the USD 80 threshold for the first time since 26 December, the newswire said.

#2- The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk sea freight index rallied for a third consecutive session on Monday, supported by a boost in capesize and panamax vessels rates, Reuters reports. The overall measure — which factors rates for capesize, panamax, and supramax vessels — rose 1% to settle at 1518 points, the index’ highest since 11 January. The panamax subindex increased 1.7% to 1576 points, while capesize rose 1.25% to 2272 points, and supramax fell 3 points to 1027, the newswire said.

Disruption Watch

Continued Red Sea disruptions put company earnings at risk as diversions tack on increased costs

Red Sea disruptions will cause company earnings to suffer with diversions increasing transit times and costs amid surging inflation, Bloomberg reports. The added time, freight and ins. costs are pushing analysts to reassess company earnings estimates for the coming year with the retail and auto sectors particularly hard hit.

Who's benefiting from this? Shippers are raking in windfall gains, with container rates rising 300% on certain routes, Bloomberg writes. Air freighters, logistics outfits, and freight forwarders also stand to make large gains if firms turn to airfreight as an alternative to maritime shipping.

Carmakers face added disruptions as car-carrying vessels get rerouted amid Red Sea disruptions, TheFinancial Times reports. Carmakers are already contending with vessel undercapacity, with some resorting to unconventional methods such as placing vehicles in shipping containers or dry bulk vessels. Diverting around the Cape would cut fleet effective capacity by some 5% to 6%, Gram Car Carriers CEO Georg Whist tells the FT. Car-carrying vessel operators have nearly 185 newbuilds on order at shipyards, the FT writes, citing Clarksons, but deliveries this year are slated to boost capacity by only 7%.

IMEC hits a brick wall due to geopolitical turmoil:Rising tensions in the Middle East due to the war in Gaza are threatening to halt the US-led India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) — poised to link India to Europe via the GCC and Israel, Bloomberg reports. Violence in the region “has diverted attention away from discussions on IMEC,” a source in the know told Bloomberg. IMEC’s faltering is a setback for US plans to counter Chinese influence and hasten a KSA-Israel rapprochement, with widespread anger in the Arab World against Israel driving the UAE and KSA — key IMEC participants — less eager to engage with Israel, the outlet said.

ICYMI- IMEC — unveiled at the G20 summit last year — looks to establish rail, maritime, and trucking corridors connecting India to Europe via the Middle East in a bid to boost trade and counter China’s rival Belt and Road Initiative. Biden hinted that IMEC was partially the reason behind Hamas’ attack on Israel last October, as the group looks to block Israel’s integration with Arab States.

IN SECURITY NEWS-

US and UK forces carried out strikes against Houthi targets on Monday, with the attacks targeting underground storage, missile, and surveillance facilities, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The latest round of strikes brings total US-led attacks against the Iranian-backed militia to eight this month, the newswire added. The action was supported by the governments of Australia, Bahrain, Canada, the Netherlands, and the UK, which issued a joint statement on Monday explaining that the strikes are meant to “disrupt and degrade” Houthi abilities to hit at international trade.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for a successful attack against a US cargo ship, dubbed Ocean Jazz, Reuters reported earlier this week. The US military has denied the claim as “patently false,” maintaining that the vessel transited safely, the US Naval Forces Central Command said on X.

Iran is “very directly involved” with Houthi attacks,US Navy commander Brad Cooper told the Associated Press on Monday. Iran is funding, training, and supplying resources to the militia, Cooper told the newswire. The naval commander also highlighted that the attacks have expanded in terms of geographic scope, describing the campaign against international shipping as “the most significant that we’ve seen in two generations”, he said.

Iraq’s Islamic Resistance group has targeted Israel’s Ashdod port with drones on Tuesday, Lebanese outlet Mayadeen reported. Israeli officials and media have yet to comment on the attacks, IRNA said on Tuesday.

New Zealand is set to deploy a six member defense team to the region, to partake in an international coalition tasked with safeguarding shipping in the Red Sea, Reuters reported yesterday citing Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Houthi attacks are “illegal, unacceptable and profoundly destabilizing,” Luxon said. The New Zealand mission will be limited to the joint defense of shipping and will not involve combat or a deployment to Yemen, he added. Italy, France, Germany, are also urging fellow EU states to take part in Aspides — a planned EU naval force, which will coordinate with the US-led naval coalition, dubbed Operation Prosperity Guardian.

Cargo thefts in the US rose over 57% y-o-y in 2023 with nearly USD 130 mn worth of goods stolen, CNBC reported earlier this week, citing data from risk analyst CargoNet. The rate is also accelerating, with the first 20 weeks of 2023 seeing a 41% boost compared to the previous 20 weeks, Uber Freight CEO Lior Ron said. The uptick in incidents is due to cargo thefts being extremely low risks and very high rewards, founder and CEO of supply chain solution company Overhaul Barry Conlon added. Firms are investing in tracking technology and bluetooth seals to clamp down on incidents, CNBC wrote.

Russia’s Ust-Luga port is continuing to export crude oil and fuel except at a terminal belonging to LNG giant Novatek where a fire broke out on Sunday, Reuters reported, citing data from LSEG and unnamed industry sources. The port, which includes a crude oil export terminal and three fuel shipment terminals, exports oil and gas products to global markets.

Background: The fire erupted earlier this week at Novatek’s LNG processing Ust-Luga complex near St. Petersburg following a Ukrainian drone attack.
