Dronamics also inked an agreement to deploy its drones through Aramex in the UAE starting next year.

THE BIG LOGISTICS STORIES OUTSIDE OF THE REGION-

Italian shipping company Kalypso di Navigazione is in a charter conflict with Chinese tonnage provider Zhonggu Shipping, which is barring its ships fromentering Israel amid the war on Gaza, Splash reports. The Chinese company has been holding Kalypso’s four 2.5k TEU ships for a month now in the Red Sea and the Pearl River Delta, preventing from calling in Israel, which is its first import call on the loop, which is Kalypso’s last remaining service. The dispute between the two companies could lead to an arbitration case, Alphaliner said in its weekly report.

ALSO- Ukraine has reached a USD 50 mn agreement with Lloyds of London and Marsh McLennan to provide ins. cover for ships hauling grain exports, according to a statement. The scheme will provide ins. against military risks, aiming to make it easier for cargo owners to get cover for transporting goods by sea from Ukraine, Bloomberg explains. This comes following a Russian missile attack on a bulk carrier last week that killed three Filipino crew members and a dock worker.


Twenty-eight international airlines are now fully operational from Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Terminal A, making it the primary terminal serving the airport, Gulf News reports. The transition to Terminal A aims to boost the airport’s capacity, with the ability to process up to 45 mn travelers annually and handle 79 planes at once. Some 7.6k flights are expected to operate from Terminal A in November and 12k flights in December. The terminal launched operations at the start of November.

Trial operating license issued for Saudi’s first hydrogen train: Saudi Transport and Logistics Minister Saleh bin Nasser Al Jasser and Transport General Authority President Rumaih bin Mohammed Al Rumaih have issued a trial operating license for the kingdom’s new zero-emission hydrogen train, according to a statement.

REMEMBER- French rail giant Alstom had been planning to introduce its hydrogen-powered train to Saudi Arabia before the end of the year, and has been seeking out partners to provide hydrogen for the project.

WATCH THIS SPACE-Saudi Technic is planning to IPO before 2030:State-owned Saudia Group’s aircraft maintenance subsidiary SaudiaTechnic aims to conduct a public share sale before the end of the decade, CEO Fahd Cynndy told Reuters at the Dubai Airshow 2023. The company, which is planning a substantial expansion of its capabilities so aircrafts can be fully serviced within KSA, is shooting for an IPO in either 2028 or 2029, Cyndy said, without disclosing which exchange it plans to list its shares on.

What’s in the immediate future? “We have institutional investors that have committed a significant amount for the capability building …. It covers our business plan up until the IPO target,” Cynndy said. Saudi Technic has secured around USD 1.33 bn to complete its maintenance, repair, and overhaul village, which is expected to open in August 2024.

DATA POINT-Dubai Airports handled some 444.6k tonnes of cargo in 3Q 2024, marking an increase of 12.3% y-o-y, according to a statement. This performance leveled out the contraction that the airports recorded at the end of last year, the statement said. Dubai Airports is forecasting annual passenger traffic at Dubai International (DXB) to reach 86.8 mn this year, surpassing 2019 traffic.

The third Caspian Economic Forum will be held in mid-November in Iran, state-owned Islamic Republic News Agency reports. The event is set to focus on transportation, joint ventures, oil and gas, finance, banking and technical cooperation in Iran, with Alireza Jahangiri, Iran’s deputy foreign caspian sea affairs minister, calling on economic institutions to attend, IRNA adds. Bulgarian drone manufacturer Dronamics to establish JV with UAE’s SDF + plans to provide cargo drones to Aramex in 2024. PLUS: More from Flydubai

SDF + Dronamics to produce Black Swan drones: The UAE’s StrategicDevelopment Fund (SDF) has inked a terms sheet with Bulgarian drone company Dronamics to form a joint venture to manufacture the Black Swan cargo drones by 2025, according to a press release. The JV will set up the company’s first serial production plant for the Dronamics Black Swan airplane, and is set to primarily serve the mid-mile delivery segment, according to the statement.

The details: The facility will be set up in the UAE, and will have the capacity to produce some 300 Black Swan drones a year, co-founder and CEO of Dronamics Svilen Rangelov said.

About the drones: The drones can transport up to 350 kgs for 1.6k miles, and the company claims it is 80% faster, 50% cheaper and emits lower emissions than alternative modes of transport.

Background: SDF has been an investor in Dronamics since late 2022, when it contributed to its USD 40 mn series A funding round. The companies also inked an MoU last month during the AVI Cluster launch event at Masdar City.

Dronamics also signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Aramex to provide it with its drones for same-day middle-mile and long-range deliveries, according to a separate statement. The companies hope to pilot the drone flights in 2024, starting with the UAE, before they look into expanding their partnership to markets like South Africa and Australia, Aramex Global Innovation Director Angad Singh said.

IN OTHER AVIATION NEWS-

Flydubai has inked an agreement with Mohammed bin Rashid Aerospace Hub(MBRAH) to build a purpose-built USD 190 mn MRO facility in Dubai South, according to a press release. The company will kick off construction of the new hangar and workshop next year, with plans to complete it by 2026, according to the statement.

What they said: “When it is up and running in 2026, the MRO facility on Dubai South will bring us significant reductions in operational costs,” COO Mick Hills said. “Having our own in-country MRO facility will ensure a quicker turnaround of our fleet maintenance while adhering to the highest quality standards. This increased level of control will result in reduced downtime as maintenance tasks can be efficiently planned and executed, minimizing any disruption to our flight schedules in the future and enhancing overall operational reliability.”

ICYMI-Emirates also announced plans to build a new USD 950 mn MRO engineering facility in Dubai earlier this week at the Dubai Airshow.

Mawani breaks ground on Jeddah Islamic Port logistics area

Mawani lays foundation stone for integrated logistics area in Jeddah Islamic Port: Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) and French shipping container firm CMA CGM have begun construction on their new SAR 487 mn integrated logistics area in Jeddah Islamic Port, according to a statement. The authority inked the agreement with the new logistics area — which is set to span over 130k square — meters back in 2022. The project is slated for completion in 1Q 2025, according to the statement.

Who’s in on it? CMA CGM Inland Services (CCIS), the group’s inland transportation solutions development arm, is collaborating with its logistics arm CEVA to closely work on the project to strengthen CMA CGM’s presence in the kingdom, according to the press release.

The details: The logistics area will include an exports hub, storage, sorting services, smart warehouses, cold storage services, and multimodal transportation solutions, according to the statement.

This is CMA CGM’s first integrated logistics platform in the region, its regional director for the Middle East Gulf, Indian Subcontinent, Indian Ocean Islands, and Southern and Eastern Africa, Jesper Steinbeck, said.

A good quarter for AD Ports + Kuwait’s Agility

Kuwait’sAgility saw its revenues + income grow in 3Q 2023: Kuwaiti logistics outfit Agility saw its bottomline grow 123% y-o-y increase in 3Q 2023 to KD 28 mn, according to its financial statements(pdf). Revenues grew 40.8% y-o-y to KD 360.8 mn during the quarter. On a 9M basis, revenues increased by 91.5% y-o-y to KD 1 bn, while net income rose 39% y-o-y to 57.5 mn.

Driving growth during the quarter: Agility attributes its growth both to its organic business and the acquisitions of Menzies and HG Storage, and one-off gains due to an interest rate hedge, it said in its financials.

The breakdown: Menzies Aviation saw a 66% y-o-y increase in revenues to KD 175.2 mn, while fuel logistics services provider Tristar’s revenues grew 15.3% y-o-y. Agility’s other segments — including its logistics parks subsidiary, United Projects for Aviation Services Company, and Global Clearinghouse Systems — collectively posted a 21% y-o-y increase in revenues to KD 101.2 mn, according to its earnings release.


AD Ports Group reported a 20% y-o-y increase in net income to AED 403 mn in 3Q2023, according to the company’s earnings release. Revenues for the period stood at AED 4.24 bn, up 189% y-o-y, underpinned by a strong performance in its maritime, ports, and logistics clusters, as well as acquisitions.

The breakdown: The logistics segment saw its revenues increase more than fivefold to reach AED 852 mn, mainly on the back of ocean freight volumes increasing 5% y-o-y in 3Q 2023. The shipping and maritime cluster jumped 264% y-o-y to AED 2.44 bn due to increased vessel trading activities in the shipping segment. The economic cities and freezones cluster recorded a 20% y-o-y increase in revenues to AED 433 mn, on the back of higher utilization at Kezad higher communities, warehouse leases and utilities. The ports cluster during the period also saw revenues rise 71% y-o-y to AED 487 mn, as container volumes grew 19% y-o-y during the quarter.

What they said: “The temporary dip in net operating cashflows is related to our strategic investments and vessel trading activities and we anticipate a normalization in our leverage and a rebound in cashflows in 4Q,” Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi said.

Azerbaijan, Morocco ink logistics MoU + Egypt meets with African countries to talk AfCFTA, trade ties. PLUS: More from KSA, GCC and the UAE

Azerbaijan + Morocco look to deepen their collaboration:Azerbaijan’s Small and Medium Business Development Agency, Export and Investment Promotion Agency, Baku International Trade Port have signed five MoUs with their Moroccan counterparts, in a bid to boost cooperation and trade, Azertac State News Agency reports. The MoUs include one aiming to establish a logistics framework agreement that can help the countries boost cooperation in the sector by developing logistics centers to facilitate trade flows, as well as training institutes and encouraging the exchange of expertise in the field, Agence Marocaine De Presse (MAP) reported separately.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Jeyhun Bayrmov also invited Moroccan investors and companies to consider investing in Azerbaijan’s Alat Freezone during the First Azerbaijan-Morocco Business Forum, the news agency added.

Egypt meets with African counterparts to discuss AfCFTA implementation + boosting trade:Egypt’s Trade and Industry Minister Ahmed Samir met with his counterparts from Kenya, Ivory Coast, and Rwanda at the Intra-Trade African Fair to discuss enhancing economic cooperation, according to a statement. The meetings with Kenyan Trade Minister Rebecca Miaono and Rwandan Trade Minister Jean Chrysostomie focused on the implementation of the African Continental Freetrade Agreement and enhancing bilateral trade, while the discussion with Ivorian minister Souleymane Diarrassouba saw them discuss boosting trade ties, including increasing imports of Ivorian products, according to the statement. Samir also discussed with the Commissioner for Trade and Industry of the African Union Commission for AfCFTA ways to implement the agreement.

Emirates inks USD 1.5 bn worth of agreements at Dubai Airshow: Emirates signed agreements worth some USD 1.5 bn on the sidelines of the Dubai Airshow to maintain and improve its operational efficiency and maximize its fleet performance, according to a press release. The agreements were inked with an expanded network of providers to deliver aviation aftermarket and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services. A rundown of the agreements:

  • Collins Aerospace will provide it with support for its A380 main landing gear overhaul program;
  • Safran Landing Systems will provide support services for its A380 Nose Landing gear;
  • Honeywellwill provide wheels and carbon brakes for 116 A380 aircraft, as well as wheel and brakes maintenance in Dubai;
  • Pratt and Whitney will provide a maintenance and support agreement for the airline’s PW980 Auxiliary Power Units;
  • OEMServicesextended their agreement for ongoing component support for the airline’s A380, which includes the supply of spare parts, repair services, and engineering support;
  • Lufthansa Technik will provide base maintenance services for the airline’s A380s and additional C Checks for the aircraft across the next three years, in Manila;
  • The airline has also signed agreements with China-based Gamecoand Haecofor A380 C checks starting early next year.

Neom Bay Airport has selected RTX subsidiary Collins Aerospaceto provide support services for airport operations and passenger processing systems, a statement reports. Collins Aerospace will be working closely with ICAD, the prime contractor on the current airport project, and will provide their airport systems — which include an operational database, resource management, messaging, and a self-bag drop system..

REMEMBER- Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of the Neom Bay Airport expansion is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023.

Edge’s Etimad Holding + ELT Group ink agreement for electronic warfare systems (EW) logistics hub: The UAE’s tech and defense conglomerate Edge’s subsidiary, Etimad Holding, inked an agreement with European defense firm ELT Group to establish a UAE-based integrated logistics support hub for EW systems, according to a statement. Under the agreement, Etimad Security Strategic Solutions will undertake the repair and maintenance of ELT’s EW systems.

Iraq’s prime minister has launched three new projects to alleviate traffic congestion in Baghdad, according to a statement by the Prime Minister’s Media Office. The projects will include the construction of bridges, overpasses, and new roads. The first project is the construction of Al Zafaraniyah bridge, which will be named Gaza, on the Al Dora-Yusufiyah highway. The second project is the development of an intersection of Al Shaljiya and Al-Tobaji in Baghdad, which will include two 1 km overpass bridges in both directions, according to the statement. And finally, the Al Talayie Bridge project will involve the construction of two bridges.

Tunisia to kickstart study for port management strategy: The President of Tunisia’s Office of Merchant Marine and Ports President and Director Fouad Othmanhas directed for the kickoff of a 15-month study to set a management plan for the country’s commercial portsuntil 2040, according to a statement. The study aims to develop a strategy to develop infrastructure and strengthen the efficiency of the ports, including Bizerte La Goulette-Rades, Sousse, Sfax, Skhira, Gabes, and Zarzis, the statement said. The study also aims to boost port capacity and develop a digital transformation strategy, the statement adds.

Thailand is pitching a new USD 28 bn Southeast Asia corridor to investors + Mitsui, Kepco cooperate on CO2 carriers, and Wärtsilä introduces ammonia fuel engine solution

Thailand wants to revive the decades-old Kra Canal to bypass Malaysia + Singapore: Thailand is pitching to US investors a USD 28 bn land bridge across the Isthmus of Kra, which would allow those shipping in Southeast Asia to bypass the Malacca Straits, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, Bloomberg reports. The idea replaces a decades old project to dredge a canal in the Isthmus of Kra with a multimodal corridor, involving two seaports on either side of Kra, along with an overland connection involving a railroad and pipelines, the business news information explains.

The pitch: The proposed 90 km-long landbridge would allow for the transport of 20 mn TEU of containers, potentially shortening the duration of transport of goods via the Malacca Strait by an average of four days and lower shipping costs by 15%, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is quoted as saying at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.


Mitsui + Kepco ink CCS service agreement to develop a liquified CO2 carrier:Tokyo-based Mitsui O.S.K. Line and Kansai Electric Power Co (Kepco) have inked a service agreement to conduct feasibility research on the design of a liquified CO2 carrier at the shipyards in Japan and overseas, according to a press release. Under this agreement, the companies will conduct studies of an optimal ship size for the carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) value chain to be constructed by Kepco, with the aim of leading to ocean transport of liquified CO2, according to the release.

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has introduced the world’s first commercially available four-stroke engine-based ammonia fuel solution for vessels, according to a statement. Wärtsilä’s 25 engine solution is designed for easy adoption of sustainable fuels, adding ammonia to its previous capabilities of operating on diesel, LNG, and carbon-neutral biofuels.

Reaching commercial markets: Zero emission shipping company Viridis Bulk Carriers will be the first shipowner to utilize the ammonia solution across its fleet. Wärtsilä and Viridis Bulk Carriers have signed an LOI for the 25 ammonia engine solution and plan to sign a commercial contract in early 2024.
