What we're tracking today

TODAY: A boost for Adnoc’s fleet + Lots of green hydrogen exports lined up for Egypt

Good morning, folks. It’s a quieter morning on the news front, but we have a handful of updates on all those green hydrogen agreements inked in Egypt this week along with a significant update from Adnoc.

HAPPENING TODAY-

The ACI Europe Annual Congress is kicking off today in Istanbul and will run until Thursday. The event will gather airport executives and representatives from airports, airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and other stakeholders globally to discuss the aviation industry, geopolitics, sustainability, and the diversification of revenues.

WATCH THIS SPACE-

#1- Egypt’s Arab Contractors is in talks with Afreximbank over a USD 50 mn loan to fund its logistics services area near the Suez Canal, managing director Mohamed Mandour told Asharq Business. The area will serve the mostly agricultural area of El Salheya and house warehouses along with foreign and locally owned factories.

#2- Danish shipping firm Maersk has dropped out of the acquisitions race to snap up logistics firm DB Schenker, Reuters reports. The company conducted an in-depth investigation into the firm and “identified areas of challenges from an integration perspective,” leading it to conclude that “acquiring DB Schenker would not be the right thing to do for [their] business at this time,” Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc said.

REMEMBER- Deutsche Bahn had chosen last month Maersk, DSV, Saudi national shipping carrier Bahri, and CVC’s consortium with Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and GIC for the final round of bidding for its logistics subsidiary DB Schenker.

#3- India and Iran are looking to fasttrack a new 700 km railway between Iran’s Chabahar Port and Zahedan city, two officials told India Shipping News. The rail route, part of the International North-South Transport Corridor, will accelerate the movement of container and dry bulk cargo between the two countries. An MoU to develop the railway line was inked between India’s Indian Railways’ IRCON and Iranian Railways’ Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructure Company back in 2016, according to the news outlet.

REMEMBER- A USD 370 mn 10-year contract was signed in May between Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) and the Port & Maritime Organisation of Iran to manage and develop Chabahar port.

#4- The US Justice Department plans to criminally charge Boeing with fraud over two 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 that resulted in 346 fatalities, Reuters reports, citing sources with knowledge of the matter. The US Justice Department is reportedly pushing for Boeing to avoid a lengthy trial by pleading guilty and paying a USD 487.2 mn penalty — of which Boeing would only pay half of due to a previous settlement — in addition to being placed under three-year oversight by an independent monitor. Boeing will be taken to trial if it refuses the offer and has until the end of the week to respond, the newswire writes.

#5- Ships will start carrying less heavy fuel in the Arctic: The United Nations' InternationalMaritime Organization (IMO) has implemented a regulation banning ships from using or carrying heavy bunker fuel oil (HFO) in Arctic waters yesterday, Reuters reports. The ban, which was adopted by IMO in 2021 and took effect on July 1, aims to prevent HFO spills that could harm the region's delicate ecosystem and species and will cut around a third of HFO carried and 16% of HFO used in Arctic waters. The regulation will be fully enforced by 2029, following the expiration of several exemptions.

The regulation isn’t in full effect yet: The regulation has exemptions which currently apply to ships built since 2017 with protected fuel tanks, reducing the likelihood of spills. Arctic coastal nations have the authority to issue waivers for ships operating in sovereign waters until 2029, with more than half of the 2019 Arctic fleet eligible for waivers. Canada, for instance, plans to issue waivers for vessels supplying food and fuel to Arctic communities until 2026. Environmental groups argue that the ban falls short, as it does not fully address the issue of black carbon emissions from ships, which accelerate ice melting due to the climate crisis.

It’s still a bumpy road: The enforcement of the new HFO regulations may be influenced by Western sanctions and the compliance of Russia, which has yet to implement the ban. The impact of the sanctions has already been seen in the delayed enforcement of high sulphur fuel oil regulations globally.

DISRUPTION WATCH-

Yemen’s Houthis have claimed responsibility for attacking four ships on the Red Sea and Mediterranean in the past week, Reuters reports. US forces also destroyed seven Houthi drones and a control station vehicle within Yemen, the US Central Command post on X.

MARKET WATCH-

Oil prices maintained a two-month high on back of increased summer demand and fear of disruption by Hurricane Beryl on US oil refining and offshore production, Reuters reports. Brent crude futures registered USD 86.80 a barrel by 03.13 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose to USD 83.53 a barrel.

The Drewry LNG Shipping Equity Index spiked up 26.4% as of 27 June, outperforming the S&P 500, which rose 14.9 during the same period, Drewry reports. Gains in the index were driven by a boost to Nakilat and Golar LNG stock prices, which were buoyed by Nakilat’s order of 25 conventional LNG vessels and nine QC-Max LNG ships from QatarEnergy, as well as growing interest from potential buyers in Golar FLNG solution, Drewry said.

PSA-

German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd’s terminal and infrastructure arm has rebanded to Hanseatic Global Terminals, according to a statement. Hanseatic manages a portfolio of 20 container terminals in 11 countries including Terminal TC3 in Morocco’s Tangier Port and Terminal 2 in Egypt’s Damietta Port.

Andoc L&S inks USD 2.5 bn LNG carrier contract with Samsung Heavy Industries + Hanwha Oceanx

Adnoc L&S earmarks USD 2.5 bn to expanding its LNG carrier fleet: Adnoc Logistics and Services (L&S) inked contacts worth USD 2.5 bn with South Korean shipyards Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean for eight to ten LNG carriers, according to a statement (pdf). The intake of newbuilds is set to boost the firm’s current fleet from 14 carriers to at least 22 vessels.

The details: Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean were each awarded contracts to build four vessels, with an option for an additional ship. Each carrier will have a 174k cubic meter capacity and operate with Mega and XDF2.2 engines, which will offer the lowest emissions in the company’s fleet.

Timeline: Delivery of the carriers will commence in 2028 and will be time chartered to Adnoc’s subsidiaries for a duration of 20 years.

Background: In late May, the firm signed letters of intent with the two shipbuilders for new vessels to serve Adnoc’s second LNG terminal at Ruwais. Ruwais aims to be the region’s first LNG export facility powered by renewable energy.

Part of the post-IPO expansion strategy: The investment is part of an expansion strategy unveiled ahead of Adnoc L&S’ landmark USD 769 mn IPO last year which will see it shell out USD 5 bn in investments in the medium term. Andoc has now plugged over half its USD 5 bn investment target into expanding its LNG fleet.

The plan is taking shape: Adnoc L&S acquired an 80% stake multinational shipping pool operator Navig8 last month in a USD 1.04 bn transaction with transfer ownership retroactively effective from 1 January 2024. The company will buy the remaining 20% in 2027 for USD 335 mn to USD 450 mn.

We have more details on Egypt’s green hydrogen bonanza

Updates on Egypt’s green hydrogen export potential: More news is trickling in from the Egypt-EU Investment Conference that wrapped on Sunday with exports being lined up left, right, and center. Here’s the latest batch of news:

#1- Egypt’s ammonia project gets the green light: The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (SFE) signed a project agreement to launch the Orascom Construction, Scatec, and Fertiglobe to launch the 100 MW of green hydrogen plant Ain Sokhna plant, according to a statement. Under the agreement, Fertiglobe will buy the plant’s entire production of green ammonia for the coming 20 years — marking the world’s first long-term green ammonia purchase agreement.

By the numbers: The plant will produce 13k tonnes of green hydrogen per year which will be converted to 70k tonnes of ammonia for transport, SFE CEO Ayman Soliman said in the statement. The consortium is also establishing solar and wind plants with a 270 MW capacity, Soliman added.

REFRESHER- The plant kicked off a trial phase in November 2022 and Fertiglobe sent its first green ammonia shipment to India from the plant last November. The company did not specify the value of the transaction, but the shipment was the world’s first to carry an ISCC Plus certification, Fertiglobe said at the time.

#2- BP is joining the gang: BP has signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Infinity Power, Hassan Allam Utilities, and Masdar to explore establishing a multi-phase green hydrogen in Egypt, according to a statement (pdf). Under the agreement, BP would serve as the main developer and operator of the proposed project which will focus on exports. The consortium signed a framework agreement with the Egyptian government at the Egypt-EU Investment conference to begin technical and commercial feasibility studies. The companies will also combine their existing green hydrogen projects under the new JDA.

#3- A EUR 3.8 bn plant by Taqa Arabia + Voltalia: Egypt’s Taqa Arabia and French Voltalia have signed a EUR 3.8 bn contract to develop a green ammonia production facility in Ain Sokhna. Production will be split into two phases, with phase one forecasted to launch in Q4 2030 and annual production capacity is set at 355.7k tons of green ammonia per year.

#4- More details on Ocior’s plant: Abu Dhabi-headquartered Ocior Engery’s is set to produce 100k tons of green ammonia in Ain Sokhna Port with commercial operations slated for launch in Q4 2029. The production center will produce 900k tons annually by 4Q 2031. Ocior Energy inked a USD 4.3 bn agreement with the SFE to develop a green ammonia plant at the Port of Ain Sokhna. The plant will primarily cater to European markets, addressing the growing demand for sustainable ammonia.

Boeing to acquire Spirit amid manufacturing and legal challenges

Boeing to acquire Spirit AeroSystems: Boeing is set to make a USD 4.7 bn acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems through an all-stock purchase that values Spirit at USD 37.25 a share and will see Boeing take on Spirit’s reported net debt, Bloomberg reports, citing sources familiar with the matter. Boeing will also gain a portion of Spirit’s defense contract work as part of the transaction, which is set to close mid-2025. Boeing’s rival Airbus SE will also acquire some of Spirit’s operations, paying a nominal price of USD 1 for the assets and receive USD 559 mn in compensation. The move reunites Boeing with Spirit, which spun off in 2005.

A hail mary for Boeing? Integrating Spirit is expected to stabilize Boeing's supply chain and enhance its aircraft production capabilities as well as quell US aviation regulators’ concerns about the company’s manufacturing blunders, Bloomberg writes. The transaction, however, will require approval from the Pentagon and US antitrust regulators, who are less keen on the consolidation of aerospace and defense manufacturing.

Turkey mediating Somalia-Ethiopia talks: Turkey is mediating talks between Somalia and Ethiopia to alleviate tensions sparked by the port agreement signed between Ethiopia and the Somali breakaway region of Somaliland earlier this year, Reuters reports. The target of the negotiations is unclear and expectations for a resolution are low, unnamed officials told the newswire.

Background: Ethiopia inked an MoU with Somaliland in January to gain access to its Red Sea port of Berbera for military and commercial purposes for a period of 50 years. In exchange, Ethiopia would recognize Somaliland as independent from Somalia, which considers Somaliland a part of its territory. In response, Somalia summoned the Ethiopian ambassador to protest the move and called the agreement “null and void”.
