DP World inked an MoU with the Dubai Municipality to develop the world’s largest logistics hub for foodstuffs, fruit, and vegetable trade, according to a press release. The hub aims to double the current fruit and vegetable market area and boost Dubai’s connectivity to global markets. No investment ticket or timeline were disclosed in the statement.

Details are scant: DP will oversee the management, operation, and development of the hub. The hub will feature advanced infrastructure and facilities to drive investments and position Dubai as a leading destination for export and re-export operation across various fields.

Why is this important? The hub aims to strengthen the UAE’s food security to meet the nation’s growing demands by creating more investments in the foodstuffs sector, unifying trade procedures, and streamlining logistics procedures via integrating advanced facilities, Deputy Ruler of Dubai Maktoum bin Mohammed said on X.

In numbers: The UAE’s current fruit and vegetables market is estimated at USD 427.3 mn and is expected to hit USD 534.6 mn by 2029, according to a Mordor Intelligence report. The country has driven its agricultural sector to expand with a shift towards greenhouse production, resulting in an increase in locally-sourced fruits and vegetables due to its adoption of hydroponics, smart irrigation, and aquaponics.
