Vintage tankers are in demand: Tankers more than 20 years old are on track to amount to 11% of all tanker demand by mid-2025, according to data from British shipbrokers Braemarpicked up by Splash. The shift to older tankers comes as charterers, who would usually not take on tankers of 15 years of age, are seeing their tankers age more rapidly, amid a lack of newbuild tankers, Splash reports. The work rate of tankers over 20 years old grew by 84% since the invasion of Ukraine, Braemer says. Older tankers such as Aframaxes for crude have also seen their average work rate nearly quadruple since the start of the war over a year ago.
