What we're tracking today

TODAY: KEZAD signs agreement for AED 1 bn food manufacturing plants + Iran + Uzbekistan in talks to establish joint freezones

Good morning, wonderful people. We have a packed issue for you this morning, with plenty of news on aviation, as well as investment and diplomacy news. Let’s dive in.

A quick programming note: Due to Egypt bringing back Daylight Savings Time (DST) over the weekend, Enterprise Logistics will now be landing in Egypt-based inboxes at 5:15am CLT. Countries in our region who (thankfully) don’t have DST will remain unaffected.

THE BIG LOGISTICS STORY- AD Ports Group subsidiary Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi(KEZAD) and regional foodstuffs giant Al Ghurair Foods have signed 50-year leases for three “mega” food projects totaling AED 1 bn in investments, while Abu Dhabi’sMonarch Holding and China’s EHang Holdings plan to establish the first facility in the MENA region for the manufacturing of electric powered passenger and cargo drones.

HAPPENING TODAY-

UAE finalizes terms for CEPA with Cambodia: The UAE has finalized the terms of its Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with Cambodia, Emirates news agency Wam reports. The CEPA talks began in October of last year, with an aim to boost bilateral trade, further strengthening relations between the two countries that saw non-oil trade grow 31% y-o-y in 2022, reaching more than USD 401 mn. The agreement will eliminate tariffs and reduce non-tariff trade barriers.

So what will the two trade? UAE investments will primarily be geared towards logistics, infrastructure, travel, and renewable energy, while its main exports will be cars, auto parts, machinery, oils and lubricants. Cambodia will export foods (including processed foods), apparel, leather goods, and footwear.

The latest in a series of CEPAs: In a push by the UEA government to double the size of its economy by 2030 to reach USD 762 bn, they have been negotiating and signing CEPAs with strategic partners, including India, Indonesia, Israel, Turkey, and Georgia.

WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Iran and Uzbekistan in talks to establish joint freezones: Iran’s Supreme Council of Freetrade Industrial and Special Economic Zones Hojatollah Abdolmaleki toured several special zones in Uzbekistan during a recent visit, according to Iranian news agency Mehr. During the visit, Abdolmaleki discussed the potential for boosting exports and investments between the two countries. Abdolmaleki recently said that Iran is in talks with 17 countries to create joint freezones with the aim of boosting trade and investment.

WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Iraq plans to expand Baghdad International Airport in 2H 2023, Prime Minister Mohammed Al Sudani said, according to Iraq’s state-run Iraq Media Network. Al Sudani met with Iraq’s transport minister, interior minister, Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority officials, and Iraqi Airways officials over the weekend, according to Iraqi News. At the assembly, Al Sudani issued directives to improve services at the airport and find quick solutions to issues hindering its performance, the news agency reported.

DATA POINT #1- DP World’s global gross volumes rose 3.7% y-o-y in 1Q 2023, with the company handling 19.5 mn TEU during the quarter, according to a press release (pdf). Gross container volumes also rose 1.4% y-o-y on a reported basis and 3.7% on a like-for-like basis, the statement said. The company attributed the growth to strong performance in Asia Pacific and India. Jebel Ali Port also performed well, reporting a 2.3% y-o-y increase at 3.5 mn TEU in 1Q 2023. The company expects to “deliver stable performance” this year despite an uncertain outlook on the market, the press release said.

DATA POINT #2- Qatar recorded a trade surplus of QAR 21.3 bn in March despite a 15.5%y-o-y decline in exports, which came in at QAR 30.9 bn during the month, according to data from the Planning and Statistics Authority. A drop in petroleum and LNG exports was the primary reason for the overall fall in exports. China and South Korea were Qatar’s top export markets in March. Imports fell 4.6% y-o-y during the month to QAR 9.6 bn.

DATA POINT #3- Iraq’s oil revenues topped USD 7.5 bn in March, according to an Iraq Oil Ministry statement. March saw the export of a little over 100 mn barrels (bbl) of crude, averaging 74.39 USD / bbl, the statement added. Most of this production was centered in southern oil fields, with northern oil fields in Kirkuk contributing marginal volumes.

Remember: Turkey halted oil flows on the from Kiruk to Ceyhan after the International Chamber of Commerce recently ruled that Turkey must pay Iraq USD 1.5 bn in damages for receiving crude oil exports from Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in 2014-2018 without Baghdad’s consent, thus breaching a 1973 agreement.

MARKET WATCH-

Trans-pacific shipping lines are hiking prices in a bid to turn around a months-long decline in rates ahead of peak importing season in the summer, the Wall Street Journal reports. The average spot price for shipping a 40-foot container from Asia to ports on the US’ West Coast has risen 34% over the past two weeks to over USD 1.6k, according to data from Norway-based tracker Xeneta cited by WSJ. The price is still much less than the average rate of USD 9.2k a year ago; however, it hints that the abrupt collapse in shipping prices that began in mid-2022 as supply chains smoothed and retailers held back rampant overstocking of inventories may have finally bottomed out, WSJ explained.

The Baltic Exchange’s primary sea freight index was up 13.5% in April, marking the third consecutive month of rising, according to Reuters. The index performance was driven mostly by increased demand for shipping via capesize vessels, with the capesize component of the index rising 38.2% during the month. Average day-to-day earnings for capesize vessels — which typically have a capacity of 150k tons and haul commodities such as iron ore and coal — increased by USD 206 to settle at a little over USD 19k.

India switches out Middle Eastern crude imports for cheaper Russian oil: India’s oil imports from the Middle East were down in April as imports of cheaper Russian crude surged, Reutersreports, citing Refinitiv data. The Middle East’s share of Indian oil imports dropped to 39.8% in April, down from an annual average of 56%. Estimates suggest that India could import up to 1.94 mn barrels per day (bbl / d) from Russia in April, a massive increase from the mere 44.5k bbl / d they were importing before the Russia-Ukraine war and the c.857k bbl / d recorded in July 2022. Meanwhile, total oil imports from the Middle East are estimated at about 1.92 mn bbl / d in April — which means that Russian imports exceeded those from all Middle Eastern countries for the first time ever.

Not a complete surprise: Sanctions have made it difficult for Russia to export its oil to European and Western markets. This, along with a price cap on Russian oil of USD 60 / bbl and voluntary cuts by OPEC+, has led to Indian buyers flocking to Russian oil to take advantage of higher margins.

A freeze on further OPEC+ cuts? Russia says that the OPEC+ group sees no need for further output cuts than those already planned for May, Reuters reports.

Abu Dhabi airport receives first SF Airlines flight linking the UAE to Wuhan, China

Abu Dhabi Airports received the inaugural flight of SF Airlines’ new Wuhan-Abu Dhabi route, which is SF Airlines’ first flight to the MENA region, according to an official statement. The milestone comes as part of a collaboration between Abu Dhabi Airports, Etihad Cargo, SF Airlines, and Kerry Logistics, the statement added. The flight comes as part of the company’s plans for global expansion, it said.

The details: The new round-trip route will run weekly, hauling 220 tons of express air cargo, Chinese state-owned news outlet Xinhua said, citing a statement from SF Airlines. General cargo, e-commerce goods, and express shipments will be the focus of the new route, Xinhua added.

What SF Airlines gets out of it: The partnership will allow the airline to tap into Etihad Cargo and Kerry Logistics’ considerable bank of regional expertise and resources, “resulting in higher-quality and more reliable service delivery for their customers,” the statement said.

And what the regional firms are getting: “This marks a new milestone in our efforts to become a leading cargo and logistics hub in the region,” MD & CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports Jamal Al Dhaheri said in the statement. The newly inaugurated route will also provide Etihad Cargo’s customers with “greater connectivity with 25 domestic destinations in SF Express’s Chinese network,” according to a parallel statement by Etihad Cargo.

First electric aviation facility to open in Abu Dhabi

First MENA electric aircraft factory to open in Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi-based infrastructure investment company Monarch Holding and China’s EHang Holdings, an Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV) technology company, have signed an agreement to establish the first facility in the MENA region for the manufacturing of electric powered aircraft for passengers and cargo drones, Wam reports.

The details: The agreement also includes the creation of command and control centers, vertiports, and training of the Emirati workforce in the sector.

The UAE is going big on electric aircraft: Last month, Canadian air mobility infrastructure developer Vports signed an MoU with the UAE’s Ras Al Khaimah Airport to build and operate a vertiport designed for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircrafts, Enterprise Climate reported. Another vertiport terminal located next to Dubai International Airport — the first of four planned for Dubai — will also be operational by 2026, as part of an electric vertical take-off and landing infrastructure (eVTOL) network that will connect Dubai’s transportation hubs by providing high speed, zero-emission travel.

It’s also establishing itself as a site for testing: Vports signed in December a 25-year lease agreement with the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority and the Mohammed bin Rashid Aerospace Hub to build a eVTOL flight testing site, which Japan’s SkyDrive will be testing its eVTOLs at. The country also granted US logistics firm United Portal Services a temporary flight permit to conduct flight tests to trial its eVTOL fleet.

IN OTHER AVIATION NEWS-

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways aims to double its fleet to 150 planes by decade’s end,Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves toldReuters. This is part of a shift that will see the company move away from ultra long-haul flights and instead focus on growing its medium and long-haul destinations, with India being a priority, Neves said. The airline currently serves Delhi and Mumbai, and has plans to add six other cities. Connecting the GCC, China, India, and Southeast Asia to Europe and the US is also part of the company’s new strategy.

Organic growth takes precedence: The airline’s growth will be “organic,” Neves said, noting that it’s not currently eyeing any mergers or equity partnerships in its target markets. Instead, it will look at codeshare and interline agreements, he added.

Egyptian National Railways + Austria’s Voestalpine partner up to manufacture and supply railway switches

Egypt inks a contract with Austrian firm to produce and supply railroad switches: Austrian steel firm Voestalpine and Egypt’s national authority for railways — Egyptian National Railways (ENR) — signed two partnership contracts to manufacture and supply railway switches at the Abbasiya workshop, under joint company Voestalpine Egypt for Railway Switch Technology, on the sidelines of the Egyptian-Austrian Business Forum in Cairo last week, according to a cabinet statement.

The details: Voestalpine Egypt for Railway Switch Technology will produce 300 switches annually under the agreements, Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel El Wazir said. The partnership will improve the efficiency of the existing production line at the Abbasiya workshop by equipping it with advanced machinery, El Wazir explained. A new modern production line will also be established, complete with state-of-the-art equipment to produce switches for Egypt’s high-speed electric train network, he added.

Boosting local production: The establishment of a joint company aligns with the government's objective of attaining self-sufficiency in the production of switches, El Wazir said. Demand for switches has surged due to the various national projects the ministry is implementing, including the initiative to modernize 10k km of railways and several high-speed electric train network and metro development projects, El Wazir noted. There are also plans to export the excess production of switches to African and Middle Eastern nations, he added.

Egypt + Austrian heads of state set to meet for more transport talks: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi accepted Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer invitation to visit Austria, after the two met at Al Ittihadiya Palace last week. The date of the visit is yet to be determined. The two discussed cooperation in transport, manufacturing, and renewable energy, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest, during their sit-down last week.

The details: Once completed, the expansion work will reduce journey time by 60% by increasing road intake capacity 200% to reach 1.5k vehicles per hour both ways. The updates should also improve access for its 320 workshops, as well as residential, educational and commercial areas, RTA Director General and Executive Board Chairman Mattar Al Tayer said.

Part of continued efforts from the RTA to improve road systems in the emirate: The RTA also has ongoing projects across several residential areas to improve road accessibility, lighting and rainwater drainage.

Some65% of carbon emissions reduction in the aviation industry will come from the switch to sustainable fuels, according to a statementfrom the International Air Transport Association. Production of those fuels, however, remains low, Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global head of Cargo said, adding that the right set of incentives could help production reach 30 bn liters by 2030 — which would be seen as a tipping point towards the net zero goal. The US and Iran play Battleship with oil tankers: US authorities last week seized a tanker carrying Iranian crude on its way to China, prompting Tehran to capture a US-bound vessel carrying Kuwaiti crude, the Financial Times reports.
