Iraq to open maritime single window at major ports: Iraq is planning to set up a maritime single window (MSW) at national ports, starting with Um Qasr Port north and south, according to a statement. Some 80% of Iraq’s imported goods come through Um Qasr’s ports. The MSW project will be implemented at Iraq’s Grand Faw Port next, slated to open in December, the statement notes.

Why is this important? IMO member states are required to digitize their maritime facilities through the one-stop MSW digital platform effective last January. The move looks to boost access to key information regarding ship movement at ports and streamline procedures and efficiency between global ports.

REMEMBER- Digitalization and paperless trade boosts efficiency and cuts costs in cross-border trade, and it stands to transform the global movement of goods. Single window initiatives — mediated via the World Trade Organisation’s Trade Facilitation Agreement — have demonstrated substantial benefits in terms of boosting trade and cutting delays and costs.
