Is solid waste the new SAF? US carbon recycling company LanzaTech Global and the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company (Tadweer) have partnered to conduct a waste-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) feasibility study to scale SAF production from municipal and commercial solid waste, according to a press release. The partnership aims to transform 350k tonnes of hard-to-recycle municipal and commercial solid waste into 200k tonnes of ethanol per year, ultimately producing 120k tonnes of SAF annually, the release states.
Turning waste to SAF: The facility will transform solid waste streams that would otherwise be piling up in landfills into a synthesis gas consisting of CO, CO2, and H2 via a gasification unit provided by NextChem, the release states. The gas stream is then transformed by LanzaTech’s microbe bioreactor into CarbonSmartTM ethanol, which will then be converted into SAF by a separate LanzaTech company LanzaJet.
