DP World is eyeing East African expansion: Dubai-based container terminal powerhouse DP World is in discussions with Tanzania to manage seven berths at its key port of Dar es Salaam, Bloomberg reports. The company is also set to build cold storage facilities and invest in advanced technology, Bloomberg quotes Tanzanian Works and Transport Minister Makame Mbarawa as saying.
The investment will also lower congestion at the port, with the average stay for a vessel potentially getting slashed from five days to 24 hours, and clearing times expedited from 12 hours to one hour, Mbarawa added.
The Tanzanian government wants DP World to drive a threefold rise in revenues from the facility USD 11.2 tn over the coming decade,Mbarawa added. The cargo traffic is also forecasted to rise to 47.6 mn tons by FY 2032-33.
This would fall in line with Tanzania’s ambitions to become a logistics hub,an ambition that requires it to improve transport infrastructure and efficiency at the port.
DP World is already active in several African countries, including Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Mozambique.
