Dubbed Handsome Henry, he is the latest of 39 Rothschild’s calves to be born since the zoo started keeping them in 1988. Belfast Zoo estimates that only 2k Rothschild's giraffes remain in the wild, while the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) put the number as low as 1.4k in 2018. “Our breeding success helps to ensure that there is a 'safety net' population of this endangered subspecies,” a Belfast Zoo manager was quoted as saying.
