WEATHER- It\u2019s going to be a windy couple of days<\/strong>, with the National Center of Meteorology forecasting heavy winds until Saturday afternoon. Temperatures are cooling down today to 33\u00b0C in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with overnight lows ranging between 27-28\u00b0C. Tomorrow will see the mercury creep back up to 36\u00b0C in both emirates, with an overnight low of 27\u00b0C. <\/p>\n

THE BIG STORY here at home is a toss-up<\/strong> between Spinneys\u2019 successful debut on the DFM, which saw its share price rise up to 11% in intraday trading, and Sharjah National Oil Corporation\u2019s move to snag a 30% stake in Eni\u2019s Block 7 in Ras Al Khaimah, marking its first investment outside of Sharjah. <\/p>\n

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT- <\/p>\n

Shareholders can now find out if they are entitled to unclaimed dividends dating<\/strong> to before March 2015<\/strong> with a new service from the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA), the SCA said in a statement<\/a>. The tool can be accessed via the SCA\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Collecting your unclaimed dividends: <\/strong>Payment requests for unclaimed equity payouts should be submitted to SCA\u2019s appointed paying agent First Abu Dhabi Bank, the authority said. The SCA had said back in February<\/a> that it would also process claims for money held in dormant brokerage accounts dating back to March 2015. <\/p>\n

WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n

<\/a> #1- Rules for DIFC \u201cprescribed companies\u201d could get an update:<\/strong> The Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC) could amend its regulations for \u201c prescribed companies<\/a> \u201d registered with DIFC, according to a statement<\/a>. Prescribed companies are private corporate vehicles that are exempt from some requirements, including auditing and filing accounts with the DIFC Registrar of Companies, and are eligible for perks including lower incorporation fees. <\/p>\n

What could change:<\/strong> The proposed regulatory changes would see DIFC cancel conditions that currently limit registration, enabling companies without a local corporate service provider or Emirati members in its management or board to register and benefit from the regime<\/a>. The review period for the proposed amendments is set to end on 1 June.<\/p>\n

\n

<\/a> #2- UAE eyes US support for semiconductor chip manufacturing ambitions:<\/strong> The UAE is seeking support from the US to become a producer of advanced semiconductors, in a bid to position itself as a regional heavyweight in artificial intelligence, AI Minister Omar Al Olama told Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The country is going after developing new generation chips<\/strong>, as opposed to competing with cheaper models from countries with larger labor forces. \u201cThe only way this will work is if we\u2019re able to build sustainable and long-term partnerships with countries like the United States where we are able to build cutting-edge chips,\u201d Al Olama said. <\/p>\n

Not the first time the UAE and the US eye chip manufacturing:<\/strong> OpenAI CEO Sam Altman touched down in the UAE last month<\/a> to push for private sector support for a costly, large-scale semiconductor venture. Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala has also backed one of the US\u2019 leading semiconductor manufacturers, Global Foundries<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n

<\/a> #3- Al Jaber arranges talks on COP29\u2019s eve: <\/strong>COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber will host a round of climate talks with energy and tech industry leaders in Abu Dhabi ahead of COP29, he told the Financial Times<\/a>. The so-called Change Makers Majlis will gather Big Oil and Silicon Valley execs to discuss how AI can make energy systems more efficient and aid in environmental conservation. <\/p>\n

DATA POINT-<\/p>\n

<\/a> #1- The UAE was the third-largest market for FDI globally last year<\/strong>, with USD 23 bn in FDI inflows into some 1.3k projects, according to GlobalData figures picked up by the National<\/a>. The biggest markets were the US and Germany. Projects spanned sectors including business and professional services, software and IT, and financial services. It was the second biggest FDI market in the region, after Israel. <\/p>\n

The main reason behind robust inflows? Domino effect. <\/strong>\u201cIn FDI, there's a big domino effect, a couple of companies come in, they're seen as successful, other companies think \u2018I'm going to come in and get a piece of the pie as well,\u2019\u201d Glenn Barklie, principal economist and head of FDI services at GlobalData, told the National.<\/p>\n

Background: <\/strong>An Emirates NBD report had ranked<\/a> the UAE second globally in the number of greenfield FDI projects in 2023 with 1,280 ventures, rising 36% y-o-y to USD 15.08 bn and trailing only behind the US. Kearney also said<\/a> the UAE is the MENA region\u2019s highest-ranked leading emerging market, securing second place as the top emerging economy as an FDI destination, after China.<\/p>\n

HAPPENING TODAY- <\/p>\n

Sharjah trade missions in India wraps:<\/strong> A trade delegation from the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry led by Chairman Abdullah Sultan Al Owais wraps its trade mission in India today, Wam<\/a> reports. The mission aimed to strengthen economic ties and explore potential investments. <\/p>\n

A Dubai International Chamber trade mission has also been making the rounds in Indonesia and <\/strong>Vietnam<\/strong> to help local companies grow in these markets, Wam<\/a> reports. <\/p>\n

HAPPENING NEXT WEEK- <\/p>\n

#1- The Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week is set to take place between 13-15 May<\/strong> at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Hosted by Abu Dhabi\u2019s Department of Health, the event will bring together around 5k attendees, 100 exhibitors, and 1k delegates specialized in healthcare. #2- Dubai will host <\/strong>The Airport Show<\/a><\/strong> from Tuesday, 14 May through to Thursday, 16 <\/strong>May <\/strong>at the Dubai World Trade Center. The event brings together airport suppliers, airport service providers, aviation executives, and regional decision makers to explore current innovations and new technologies.<\/p>\n

#3- <\/strong>Seamless Middle East<\/a><\/strong> will kick off next Tuesday, 14 May, <\/strong>at the Dubai World Trade Center, and run until Thursday, 16 May. The three-day event includes a conference welcoming over 500 speakers to cover the latest trends, market disruptors, and technologies in digital commerce, and a multi-brand exhibition hosting over 700 exhibitors in the digital commerce industry. <\/p>\n

#4- The <\/strong>Acres Real Estate Exhibition<\/a><\/strong> is set to take place between 16-19 May at the<\/strong> Dubai World Trade Center<\/strong>. The event will gather leading property developers, investors, brokers, and experts, to showcase the latest projects and technologies in the real estate industry.<\/p>\n

#5- <\/strong>The Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association Supply Chain<\/a><\/strong>Conference<\/a><\/strong> is scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday, 15-16 May<\/strong> at the Address Sky View Hotel in Dubai. The conference will bring together industry players under the theme Harnessing Connectivity for a Sustainable Tomorrow, discussing supply chain connectivity and AI integration in the industry.<\/p>\n

MARKET WATCH-<\/span><\/p>\n

Goldman Sachs no longer thinks Opec+ will announce a partial unwind of <\/strong>voluntary production cuts <\/strong>in their next meeting, set to take place on 1 June in Vienna, the bank said in a note picked up by Reuters<\/a>. The bank estimates only a 37% chance of a production increase, owing to inventories surprising to the upside. \u201cWe now expect Saudi crude supply to remain flat at 9 mn barrels per day in July (vs. 9.2 previously),\u201d with Brent crude expected to range between USD 75-90 a barrel, and USD 82 in 2025.<\/p>\n

THE BIG STORY ABROAD- <\/p>\n

Front pages of the foreign press are still dominated by the war in Gaza <\/strong>\u2014 plus a lot of news on AI and Apple. <\/p>\n

#1- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel will continue to fight \u201ceven with <\/strong>our fingernails\u201d <\/strong>following the US\u2019 warnings<\/a> that it will suspend shipments of arms amid Israel\u2019s invasion of Rafah in Gaza. \u201cIf we have to stand alone, we will stand alone,\u201d Netanyahu said in a video on X. <\/p>\n

The US downplayed its warnings later yesterday<\/strong>, with spokesman John Kirby saying the shipments were only \u201cpaused\u201d and that \u201cthe arguments that somehow we\u2019re walking away from Israel flies in the face of the facts.\u201d <\/p>\n

Israel continued to attack Rafah late last night<\/strong>, after a senior Israeli official confirmed that ceasefire talks ended with no resolution. The story got attention everywhere, including Bloomberg<\/a>, Reuters<\/a>, CNN<\/a>, AP<\/a>, and BBC<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Over in the business press, Apple is making headlines for more than one reason, <\/strong>and a new US bill to restrict AI exports getting attention: <\/strong><\/p>\n

#1- The tech giant received backlash over its iPad ad<\/strong>(watch, runtime: 1:08),<\/a> which depicts crushed musical instruments and other analog items crushed into the form of the iPad, for being culturally insensitive and disrespectful. A marketing exec at Apple apologized later, telling Ad Age<\/a> that the company had \u201cmissed the mark\u201d with the ad and that it would not run it on TV. (TechCrunch<\/a> | CNBC<\/a> | Financial Times<\/a> | WSJ<\/a>) <\/p>\n

#2- Apple also plans to equip its AI servers with its own in-house chips as soon as this year<\/strong>, sources told Bloomberg<\/a>. These servers will power AI features coming to Apple devices. <\/p>\n

#3- SPEAKING OF AI- OpenAI is planning to unveil its AI-powered Google competitor on Monday<\/strong>, Reuters<\/a> reports. The announcement would come a day before Google\u2019s annual I\/O conference, where it is set to announce its new AI products. <\/p>\n

#4- AND- US lawmakers unveiled a bill yesterday designed to remove roadblocks to imposing controls on AI exports<\/strong>, as it continues its attempts to safeguard US tech from China, Reuters<\/a> reported. <\/p>\n
