The investment will give Microsoft President Brad Smith a seat on G42\u2019s board. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The details:<\/strong> Under the agreement, Microsoft will hold an unspecified minority stake in G42, while G42 will use Microsoft\u2019s cloud platform, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azure.microsoft.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Azure<\/a>, to run its AI platforms and services and deliver advanced AI services to its public and private sector customers. At a later stage, Microsoft will be able to host some of its applications in G42\u2019s data centers to expand its customer outreach to Africa and Central Asia, Bloomberg <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-04-16\/microsoft-invests-1-5-billion-in-uae-s-g42-will-get-board-seat\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>, citing Smith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The two firms will also jointly set up a USD 1 bn fund to support AI developers<\/strong>, geared at strengthening the AI infrastructure and capabilities in the UAE and the wider MENA region. No further details were provided on the fund.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Expanding an existing friendship:<\/strong> The companies revealed a partnership <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/en-xm\/2023\/09\/05\/g42-and-microsoft-unlock-new-opportunities-for-digital-transformation-with-joint-sovereign-cloud-and-ai-offering\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last September<\/a> to jointly develop cloud services and expand Microsoft\u2019s data center infrastructure in the UAE. Additionally, the companies inked an MoU in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/en-xm\/2023\/04\/11\/g42-teams-up-with-microsoft-to-explore-acceleration-of-uaes-digital-transformation\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">April 2023<\/a> to explore the development of customized cloud solutions. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What they said: <\/strong>\u201cThrough Microsoft\u2019s strategic investment, we are advancing our mission to deliver cutting-edge AI technologies at scale. This partnership significantly enhances our international market presence, combining G42\u2019s unique AI capabilities with Microsoft\u2019s robust global infrastructure. Together, we are not only expanding our operational horizons but also setting new industry standards for innovation,\u201d G42 CEO Peng Xiao said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The agreement could speed up global AI deployment: <\/strong>\u201cThere are markets today where Microsoft and really no American technology company has a real data center presence. The company\u2019s CEO Peng Xiao had vowed to phase out its stakes in Chinese hardware suppliers in statements to the FT last December.
