FedEx Express launches new cargo hub at DWC:<\/strong> Air cargo express delivery giant FedEx Express has inaugurated a new AED 1.3 bn Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa (MEISA) hub at Dubai World Central (DWC) Airport in Dubai South, according to a Dubai Media Office (DMO) statement<\/a>. The 57k square meter hub incorporates technologies such as automatic sort systems which look to streamline package processing and distribution, the statement said. <\/p>\n

MANUFACTURING- <\/p>\n

Magsort\u2019s green tech will decarbonize the steel value chain:<\/strong> UAE\u2019s largest steel maker Emirates Steel Arkan<\/a> and Finnish climate tech company Magsort<\/a> will initiate pilot testing for an initiative to cut up to 15% of CO2 emissions from the steel maker\u2019s Al Ain Cement Factory, according to a press release.<\/a> Magsort\u2019s technology is being used to process steel slag<\/a> \u2014 a calcium-rich by-product of steel making \u2014 in efforts to decrease limestone and fuel consumption. The plant will be the first of its kind for the region, and comes on the back of Emirates Steel Arkan\u2019s efforts to reach the country\u2019s 2030 decarbonization targets four years ahead of schedule,\u200d CEO of EmsteelBuilding Materials<\/a> \u2014 a subsidiary of Emirates Steel Arkan \u2014 Hugo Losada said.<\/p>\n

TECH-<\/p>\n

#1- Uzbekistan to adopt UAE-run AI: <\/strong>Uzbekistan\u2019s digital technology ministry inked an agreement with Abu Dhabi\u2019s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC)<\/a> to integrate the UAE\u2019s AI-powered Falcon Large Language Model (LLM) in its technological infrastructure and government services, according to an ATRC statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

ICYMI: <\/strong>Last week<\/a>, Brazil and Serbia also agreed to adopt the open-source LLM in a bid to advance their governments\u2019 tech infrastructure during the World Government Summit.<\/p>\n

#2- Abu Dhabi\u2019s Economic Development Department and Hub71 are launching a <\/strong>program to connect startups in key sectors with their regulatory authorities<\/strong>, according to the Abu Dhabi Media Office<\/a>. The \u201cregulatory sandbox program\u201d targets healthtech, mobility, and agritech companies close to market entry stage, allowing them to test emerging technologies with regulators ahead of launch. <\/p>\n

#3- AI office + UNDP partner to accelerate AI adoption:<\/strong> The government\u2019s AI office<\/a> inked a partnership agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to promote leveraging AI technologies to achieve the sustainable development goals, Wam<\/a> reports. <\/p>\n

BANKING-<\/p>\n

Adib launches new payment platform to streamline remittance transfers:<\/strong>Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank<\/a> partnered with payment solutions company ProgressSoft<\/a> to launch a new payment platform that it says will simplify the integration of cross-border services and speeds up cross-border remittances, state news agency Wam<\/a> reports. <\/p>\n

EDUCATION-<\/p>\n

The Education Ministry wants to make it easier for higher education institutions <\/strong>in the <\/strong>Ajman Freezone to obtain licenses<\/strong>, according to a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

WASTE MANAGEMENT-<\/p>\n

IFFCO Group<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <\/strong>Noor Oil and <\/strong>Bee\u2019ah<\/a><\/strong>have launched a recycling campaign to<\/strong> recycle <\/strong>cooking oil into biodiesel<\/strong>, according to a statement<\/a>. The campaign involves placing Bee\u2019ah machines in several locations across the country \u2014 including Sharjah National Park, Al Gharayen, and Dubai\u2019s JLT \u2014 where consumers can drop off their used cooking oil and pick up a clean bottle in its place.<\/p>\n

IFFCO is boosting sustainability efforts: <\/strong>IFFCO earmarked AED 77 mn<\/a> for its corporate ESG strategy, with 156 projects in the pipeline, back in November. <\/p>\n

GREEN ENERGY-<\/p>\n

SkyPower Global to build solar plant in Congo:<\/strong> The Africa Finance Corporation<\/a> (AFC) has contracted UAE-based firm SkyPower Global<\/a> to develop a 200 MW solar plant in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, company CEO Kerry Adler told Khaleej Times<\/a>. The project marks the first phase of the USD 200 mn, 1 GW DRC Green Giant project slated for completion within 18-24 months.<\/p>\n
