{"id":117098,"date":"2026-05-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/?p=117098"},"modified":"2026-05-14T03:12:47","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T03:12:47","slug":"btc-miner-phoenix-shifts-toward-ai-infrastructure-in-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2026\/05\/14\/btc-miner-phoenix-shifts-toward-ai-infrastructure-in-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"BTC miner Phoenix shifts toward AI infrastructure in Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>Abu Dhabi-based Phoenix Group is making a shift from BTC mining to building<\/strong><strong> large\u2011scale AI and high\u2011performance computing (HPC) infrastructure<\/strong>, with its first <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2026\/5\/774.pdf\" style=\"\">contract (pdf)<\/a> for an 18 MW data center in Lyon, France \u2014 marking its first venture into global AI infrastructure. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Yes, it\u2019s a full-on shift. <\/strong>\u201cAI and HPC infrastructure is where the majority of our capital and focus is directed going forward,\u201d Founder and CEO Munaf Ali tells EnterpriseAM, describing it as an \u201cevolution\u201d given the foundations already built with BTC mining. \u201cBTC mining is fundamentally an infrastructure business built around power procurement, large-scale compute, cooling, and the ability to energize facilities at speed,\u201d Ali explains. \u201cThose are exactly the capabilities that the AI and HPC markets demand.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>He expects AI and HPC infrastructure to become the dominant part of the business by contribution<\/strong>, with plans to develop a 1 GW platform across the GCC and Europe. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s mostly about timing:<\/strong> \u201cAI infrastructure demand is outpacing supply globally,\u201d he explains. \u201cThe window to establish strong positions, with the right sites, power, and partnerships is open now, and we have the operational capability and balance sheet to move, so we are moving.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But it\u2019s also about de-risking: <\/strong>Last year, Ali told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/06\/20\/2025\/abu-dhabi-bitcoin-miner-considers-us-listing-in-pivot-to-ai\" style=\"\">Semafor<\/a> that both AI and crypto de-risk each other. \u201cBTC mining can be operational in six months,\u201d while an AI data center can take years to build and to lock in tenants, he said at the time. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The details: <\/strong>The company is working with DC Max, a French data center developer with a 1 GW pipeline already in the bag, valued at USD 8 bn, on the project. DC Max is bringing to the fore its grid access and on-the-ground relationships, with the project now ready to go: land is secured in Lyon, where costs are \u201csignificantly lower than in Paris,\u201d as the statement says, and the grid connection is in place with available power. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The project is on track to begin construction in July 2026<\/strong>, with an eye to deliver the data center in 4Q 2027 or 1Q 2028. That clear timeline, coupled with the fact that the site is already permitted with grid and power connection available, is a \u201cgenuinely rare combination in the current European market \u2014 and that profile attracts serious demand,\u201d he says, noting that there are \u201cactive conversations\u201d with potential tenants underway. <\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">What\u2019s next? <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The company said it plans to make \u201cfurther announcements\u201d this year<\/strong>, with both Europe and the GCC in its sights. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why the focus on Europe?<\/strong> The company sees it as a \u201cgrowth engine\u201d alongside its expertise in the GCC. \u201cFrance alone has a pipeline that supports serious scale, and we are not limiting our ambitions to a single country,\u201d Ali says, without disclosing a specific planned geographic breakdown for the 1 GW target.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Where next?<\/strong> \u201cSequencing will reflect where the right combination of site readiness, power, and commercial terms comes together first,\u201d he tells us. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Background <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Phoenix has been scaling its mining operations<\/strong> across the GCC, North America, and Ethiopia, with around 550 MW of deployed capacity.
