Restaurants at functioning hotels are also suspending operations, including at landmark Dubai hotel <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.khaleejtimes.com\/lifestyle\/atlantis-dubai-pauses-seven-restaurants\" style=\"\">Atlantis<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The outlook is bleak:<\/strong> Total UAE consumption could decline roughly 12% this year compared with prior expectations \u2014 but <strong>around 70% of that decline is expected to come from tourists<\/strong> <strong>rather than residents<\/strong>, analysts at Redseer Strategy Consultants said at a recent webinar attended by EnterpriseAM. Tourism flows are expected to remain 35-40% lower than 2025 levels, with a full recovery potentially taking until 2029, the analysts noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The events side of the industry has also been hit particularly hard. <\/strong>\u201cThe events business is completely destroyed,\u201d Boca founder Omar Shihab tells EnterpriseAM. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Mid-market casual dining spots are also particularly exposed<\/strong>, given they lack both the pricing power of luxury venues and the scale advantages of value or quick-service chains, Stock argues. \u201cThe mid-market has always been squeezed,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Less hard hit are delivery platforms, quick-service chains, and neighborhood concepts, which are proving materially more resilient <\/strong>due to the resilience of demand from residents, accelerating the UAE\u2019s evolution into an even more home-centered consumption economy, analysts say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">It\u2019s already showing up in the data <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The dine-in side of the market is already showing signs of strain.<\/strong> Dine-in order volumes across restaurant management platform Syrve\u2019s UAE network declined nearly 8% to 4.57 mn orders in 1Q 2026, while the number of active dine-in venues fell to 577 from 621 restaurants, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2026\/5\/565.pdf\" style=\"\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Total dine-in revenue dropped to AED 574 mn from AED 614 mn during the quarter. <\/strong>Still, average spend per dine-in order remained broadly resilient, rising modestly to AED 125.5 from AED 124. This points not to a collapse in local consumer spending, but to the fact that fewer venues are processing fewer transactions as weaker tourism and changing dining behavior weigh on restaurant traffic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>By contrast, delivery orders across Syrve\u2019s UAE network rose 18% y-o-y<\/strong> in 1Q 2026 to 1.9 mn orders, even as the number of active restaurants offering delivery fell to 332 from 342 venues. Delivery now accounts for 29% of all restaurant orders processed through Syrve\u2019s UAE network, up from 25% a year earlier. Total delivery revenue processed through Syrve\u2019s network rose 15% y-o-y to AED 150.7 mn during the quarter, while at the venue level, average quarterly revenue per delivery restaurant rose 18% to AED 454k. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Again, consumers don\u2019t appear to be spending dramatically more per order. <\/strong>Average delivery order value was effectively flat, slipping marginally to AED 79.37 from AED 79.55, suggesting the growth is being driven almost entirely by higher order frequency rather than bigger baskets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>For restaurants, that distinction matters enormously: <\/strong>\u201cThis is a revenue crisis, not a resident confidence crisis,\u201d analysts at Redseer Consultants said during the webinar, explaining that most of the expected slowdown in consumer spending is being driven by disappearing tourist demand rather than collapsing resident spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Still, even residents\u2019 consumption habits are changing <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Consumers are increasingly gravitating toward simpler, lower-commitment spending occasions<\/strong>, such as quick coffees close to home, comfort food, casual dining, or delivery ordered into the house. That\u2019s because \u201cno one wants big commitments,\u201d Shihab tells us. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Stock also expects consumers to increasingly trade down as costs rise<\/strong>, which would hit the mid-market and high-end concepts harder, while potentially benefiting value-oriented and quick-service players. She argues that lower-cost segments are better positioned to weather the current environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>That shift is making restaurant traffic far more unpredictable. <\/strong>Execs say headline footfall figures can be misleading, with occasional busy weekends masking a much weaker operating environment underneath. \u201cYou have one or two days maximum of the business almost reaching capacity,\u201d Shihab says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>That\u2019s also likely not helped by the fact that many offices are still working remotely.<\/strong> DIFC was evacuated again last week when alerts were sent out that the Defense Ministry is engaging missiles and drones, and some companies \u2014 specifically those named earlier on Iran\u2019s \u201ctarget list\u201d \u2014 never even returned, we\u2019re told. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Restaurants are now navigating highly volatile demand patterns<\/strong>, with busy weekends followed by weak weekdays, shorter dining occasions, and inconsistent reservation flows. \u201cScheduling because of uncertainty is huge,\u201d Shihab says, adding that \u201cplanning is out of the window [...] especially when it comes to money [and] scheduling staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The real squeeze is costs<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cThe factor that contributes the most stress would be logistic costs,\u201d <\/strong>Stock tells us. Restaurants across the UAE remain heavily reliant on imported ingredients and internationally integrated supply chains, leaving them directly exposed to higher freight, fuel, and shipping costs. Stock estimates that between 20-50% of cost increases across the sector could ultimately be attributable to logistics and fuel-related disruptions alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Unlike retailers, restaurants don\u2019t always have the flexibility to easily swap suppliers or ingredients overnight. <\/strong>\u201cRestaurants cannot change ingredients on a daily basis. They cannot change suppliers on a daily basis,\u201d Shihab says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Restaurants say suppliers are already passing on higher prices almost immediately. <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019ve heard stories of restaurants receiving items [...] with the prices already increased,\u201d Shihab says. One supplier we spoke to recently \u2014 premium butchery CarniStore \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2026\/04\/10\/how-one-fb-business-is-keeping-shelves-stocked-and-absorbing-costs-during-crisis\/\" style=\"\">said they\u2019ve been trying to absorb costs<\/a>, but that realistically speaking, pricing will likely remain elevated for months even after disruptions end as supply normalizes. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Survival mode<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The result is a sector increasingly focused on operational survival. <\/strong>Restaurants are redesigning menus, simplifying dishes, tightening staffing schedules, reducing operating hours, negotiating harder with suppliers, and leaning heavily into value-oriented offers, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bv7PnjPZg4\" style=\"\">Reuters<\/a> recently reported. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cPeople want simplicity right now,\u201d <\/strong>Shihab says, noting restaurants are introducing lighter menus, simpler dishes, combination offers, and more flexible reservation structures. \u201cEveryone\u2019s really trying to squeeze all of the ideas,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Restaurants are also becoming more aggressive around waste reduction and inventory controls.<\/strong> Syrve MENA CEO Alex Ponomarev says the current environment is forcing restaurants to become \u201cmore accurate and more careful with their spending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">If more people are ordering in than eating out, could more restaurants pivot?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s not that simple. <\/strong>\u201cIn the Emirates specifically, it\u2019s very difficult to grow delivery services intensively,\u201d Ponomarev says, noting how saturated the market has become. \u201cYou [can] no longer simply just offer your menu on delivery,\u201d Shihab says. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Late entrants face high marketing costs, expensive customer acquisition, and fierce competition from established brands. <\/strong>\u201cIf you haven\u2019t been doing your homework over the last few years, it\u2019s going to take a lot more,\u201d Shihab says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Who might come out of this stronger? <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Quick-service restaurants, in particular, appear more adaptable <\/strong>because of their menu flexibility, operational nimbleness, and ability to pivot faster than fine-dining concepts, Stock says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Delivery and quick commerce may also emerge as some of the biggest long-term winners from the disruption.<\/strong> Redseer argues the current environment is accelerating the UAE\u2019s broader shift toward convenience-led, home-centered consumption. \u201cThis conflict is doing for quick retail what Covid did for online retail,\u201d the consultancy says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Redseer expects quick commerce to grow more than 40% faster than previous expectations this year<\/strong>, driven by consumers increasingly prioritizing convenience, proximity, and rapid fulfillment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The current environment may also accelerate consolidation across both the restaurant and delivery ecosystem. <\/strong>\u201cFewer venues [are] processing significantly more orders, generating higher revenue per site, and managing a larger share of the supply chain,\u201d Ponomarev says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>That\u2019s supported by the fact that the sector already had plenty of supply \u2014 with some arguing it was too much.<\/strong> \u201cThere is a lot more supply than demand [in the F&B sector],\u201d Shihab says, warning the imbalance may become one of the defining themes of the UAE\u2019s next restaurant cycle. The UAE remains one of the world\u2019s most competitive restaurant markets, with the market historically facing exceptionally high closure rates even during periods of strong economic growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cThis has always been challenging,\u201d<\/strong> he says. The difference now, he argues, is that the entire market is being stress-tested at once. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Larger chains possess structural advantages in moments like these: <\/strong>Procurement leverage, operational efficiencies, stronger delivery infrastructure, centralized cost controls, and better access to capital. \u201cScale is always\u201d an advantage, Stock says. \u201cThe stronger brands, they will become even more stronger,\u201d Ponomarev adds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Chains are also better positioned to protect margins by negotiating procurement terms<\/strong>, optimizing labor costs, and absorbing short-term pressure.
