They encompass tools like futures, options, and perpetual swaps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The broad strokes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Firms will now have to get <strong>explicit approval from Vara<\/strong> to offer derivatives; <\/li>\n<li>Exchanges must run <strong>pre-trade controls<\/strong> to stop users from taking on exposure they can\u2019t sustain; <\/li>\n<li><strong>Leverage will be capped at 5x<\/strong> for retail traders; <\/li>\n<li>Platforms are <strong>required to monitor positions in real time<\/strong> and step in before losses spiral;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pricing, risks, and liquidation triggers must be clearly disclosed<\/strong> and align with what users actually see on-screen; <\/li>\n<li><strong>Margin trading accounts will need to be segregated<\/strong> from any other trading accounts; <\/li>\n<li>ETD providers must <strong>establish and maintain an<\/strong> <strong>ins. fund<\/strong> with a minimum balance set by Vara to cover potential systemic shocks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And Vara can step in fast: <\/strong>The regulator has built-in powers to intervene during market stress or misconduct, including restricting activity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why the capped leverage? <\/strong>Excessive leverage was among the reasons behind the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/11\/how-the-fall-of-three-arrows-or-3ac-dragged-down-crypto-investors.html\" style=\"\">2022 collapse<\/a> of crypto hedge fund 3AC, after the firm borrowed extensively to speculate on assets like BTC and ETH and failed to meet margin calls when prices dropped.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The framework is progressive, especially when compared with other jurisdictions<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>While jurisdictions like Hong Kong and the US have been working on regulating derivatives for years, Dubai\u2019s framework is \u201ctailored for global players, placing it ahead of several traditional derivatives jurisdictions, including the UK, and offering a clearer and more purpose-built approach than MiCA [the EU\u2019s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation],\u201d Carolina Rios, CEO and founder of Saja Legal Consultants, told Enterprise AM UAE <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A pilot is already live: <\/strong>Crypto exchange OKX was among the first to move under the framework, launching regulated retail derivatives in the UAE \u2014 including futures, perpetual contracts, and options \u2014 under Vara\u2019s pilot regime, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unlock-bc.com\/en\/okx-uae-retail-derivatives-pilot\" style=\"\">Unblock Blockchain<\/a> reports. CEO Rifad Mahasneh said the launch reflects \u201ca perfect alignment\u201d between user demand, regulatory clarity, and the firm\u2019s roadmap.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But it will take time for more options to come to market: <\/strong>Given derivatives require specific regulatory approval, with licensed firms required to submit detailed applications, \u201ctop-tier exchanges may take approximately 3-6 months to achieve an initial product rollout, while broader market adoption is likely to require between 6-12 months,\u201d Rios explained. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">It\u2019s early, but demand will likely pick up<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Demand is still finding its footing:<\/strong> \u201cWe do see underlying demand for crypto derivatives in the UAE, but it\u2019s still at an early stage compared to more mature markets,\u201d Bybit\u2019s MENA Country Manager Derek Dai tells EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The foundations are there, though: <\/strong>Dai pointed to the UAE\u2019s \u201cwell-developed financial ecosystem,\u201d spanning banks, family offices, and institutional investors.
