The move was announced during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/uae\/en\/news\/story\/844256dc-00cd-48f4-b0cf-b484a1b993f2\/this-morning:-fab-plans-new-at1-issuance-%2B-ihc-eyes-usd-25-bn-from-minority-holding\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">visit<\/a> to Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>DATA POINT-<\/strong> The UAE\u2019s foreign direct investments in Canada stood at USD 8.8 bn last year, during which Canada invested USD 242 mn in the Emirates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\">ICYMI-<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> Earlier in the visit, the two sides inked an <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/uae\/en\/news\/story\/b444f6d9-42fd-49f1-908b-5de592f47fe2\/uae,-canada-sign-investment-protection-agreement,-launch-trade-talks--during-carney%25e2%2580%2599s-abu-dhabi-visit\" rel=\"noopener\">investment protection and promotion agreement<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">, aimed at setting out clear rules for Canadian firms to expand in the UAE. The two countries also launched trade talks during the visit, targeting UAE entry for Canadian firms specializing in engineering, agrifood, aerospace, and seafood, and potentially boosting bilateral trade to USD 7 bn within 10 years \u2014 up from USD 3.4 bn currently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Other agreements inked during the visit: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Montreal\u2019s AI research institute Mila<\/strong> partnered with the <strong>Technology Innovation Institute<\/strong> to advance <strong>research on AI architecture<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>BlackBerry<\/strong> teamed up with the <strong>Cyber Security Council<\/strong> to strengthen <strong>cyber cooperation and infrastructure<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invest in Canada<\/strong> and the <strong>Investment Ministry<\/strong> agreed to <strong>identify<\/strong> and explore <strong>large-scale investment windows<\/strong> in Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Next up: Canada\u2019s International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu will lead a business delegation to the UAE early next year<\/strong> to encourage Emirati investors to explore prospects in Canada through its Major Projects Office, including in LNG, critical minerals, ports, data infrastructure, AI, and agriculture. Canadian pension funds \u2014 which manage USD 2 tn \u2014 will also travel to the UAE in 2026 to pursue long-term investments and partnerships and Emirati sovereign wealth funds will visit Canada. The two countries are also increasing the number of flights operating between them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Canada pivots away from US:<\/strong> The Canadian government is aiming to double non-US exports over 10 years and bring in USD 1 tn in new investments in five years. The US is Canada\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/country-pays\/us-eu\/relations.aspx?lang=eng\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">largest trading partner<\/a>, with over USD 909.1 bn traded <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/countries-regions\/americas\/canada\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last year<\/a>, though trade talks over lowering US-imposed tariffs have stalled after US President Donald Trump took offense to an anti-levy advertisement.
