Plus: The World Bank\u2019s Mena economic update isn\u2019t as bad as it seems on first glance. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>BUT FIRST- Some international scuttlebutt <\/strong>to get your morning started: <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Regional HQ? We ain't got no regional HQ. We don't need no regional HQ\u2026 <\/strong>BNP Paribas doesn\u2019t want to have to choose between Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Riyadh \u2014 so it\u2019s planning to cut staff in Bahrain and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/bnp-paribas-scrap-bahrain-middle-east-hq-cut-jobs-sources-say-2024-10-16\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cscrap Manama as its Middle East and Africa head office,\u201d<\/a> Reuters says, citing unnamed sources. All of its offices in our neck of the woods would instead report into Paris if the plan goes ahead. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>MEANWHILE- Jamie Dimon seems to be the only guy on Wall Street with an appetite for <\/strong><strong>Africa. <\/strong>He\u2019s on a tour of the continent this week after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/kenya-allows-jpmorgan-chase-set-up-representative-office-locally-2024-10-14\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenya said on Monday it would allow JPMorgan Chase<\/a> to set up a rep office there and is now saying that <strong>the bank plans to enter Kenya and Ivory Coast this year. <\/strong>\u201cWe want to add a country or two in Africa, every couple of years or so,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Dimon\u2019s target market: <\/strong>Cover governments, large state-owned enterprises, and multinationals with \u201ctraditional banking services\u201d including commercial banking, investment banking advisory, treasury services, and probably some lending. <\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WORLD BANK MENA ECONOMIC UPDATE<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a> <strong>The World Bank\u2019s semi-annual MENA economic outlook was out overnight. <\/strong>The report sounds a distinct note of caution about how war in Gaza (to say nothing of Lebanon and the menace to Red Sea shipping) is an overhang on economic growth. Check out <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2024\/10\/16\/modest-growth-forecast-for-economies-in-the-middle-east-and-north-africa-amid-rising-uncertainty\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">the announcement here<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/10\/1408.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">the report here (pdf)<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The report plays up the deceleration of growth in 2024<\/strong>, saying that it\u2019s been driven largely by the GCC economies. MENA economies as a whole will grow about 2.2% in 2024 \u2014 better than the 1.8% we saw in 2023, but far off the 5.8% pace we saw the year before. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We hope we\u2019re not indulging our inner Pollyanna, but\u2026 <\/strong>That take masks the bank\u2019s own forecast for a sharp pickup in growth next year. Check out (numbered) page 11, where the report\u2019s authors are forecasting that growth in 2025 will accelerate to 3.8% across the region. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>For the Big Three<\/strong>, the World Bank see:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UAE growth at 4.1% in 2025<\/strong>, up from 3.3% this year;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saudi growing at a 4.9% clip in 2025<\/strong>, compared to just 1.6% this year;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Egypt\u2019s economy expanding 3.5% in 2025<\/strong>, compared to 2.5% this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The worry: <\/strong>\u201cEconomic\u202funcertainty in MENA\u202fis currently twice the average of other emerging markets and developing economies worldwide,\u201d the report writes, saying its estimate is based on its measure of \u201cthe dispersion of views amongst private sector forecasters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What to watch for next: <\/strong>The report is out ahead of the kickoff next week of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/meetings\/splash\/annual\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">World Bank and<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/meetings\/splash\/annual\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">IMF Annual Meetings<\/a> in Washington, DC. The shift is largely driven by financial institutions, which are incorporating social elements into their projects to align with broader sector objectives.
