The index inched up to 54.2 last month, from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/uae\/en\/news\/story\/71b5ae64-0f21-4394-8e85-375f0eb6b270\/non-oil-business-activity-slows-to-a-three-year-low-in-july\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">53.7 in July<\/a>, signaling \u201csolid improvement in the health of the non-oil private sector,\u201d although it came in as the second-softest uptick in over a year and a half.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Business activity was on the up as non-oil firms logged a surge in new orders midway <\/strong><strong>through 3Q. <\/strong>Foreign clients were the big source of new business, with export orders seeing their sharpest increase since October 2023, pushing overall new business growth to a five-month peak. Growth was also supported by improved domestic conditions, which boosted business and consumer spending alongside ongoing project work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We still have a long way to go: <\/strong>Despite the rebound, business growth was among the weakest it has been in the past three years. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Challenges persisted: <\/strong>While companies kicked up their output to meet the uptick in demand, the impact of this year\u2019s flood and supply chain issues strained operations and slowed down firms\u2019 ability to process new orders in August. Work backlogs hit record levels, \u201calthough the rate of accumulation was the softest since January,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Supply chains showed some signs of recovery<\/strong>, with vendor delivery times improving as suppliers were \u201cbetter able to reset their schedules\u201d; stockpiling of inputs resumed modestly. The hiring rate was the softest in seven months \u2014 some cut staff to cope with rising costs, but others added to their teams amid rising demand. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Input prices continued to climb: <\/strong>August saw another spike in raw materials, transport, IT equipment, and maintenance costs, while wage costs rose at the fastest pace since May. Still, businesses benefited from cooling purchase price inflation. Businesses raised prices for the fourth month running, though at a slower rate. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Looking ahead: <\/strong>\u201cProjections for business activity strengthened in August \u2026 with firms largely positive that domestic economic conditions will improve,\u201d S&P Global said, adding that \u201ccompanies also suggested that strong sales pipelines would shore up output over the coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>MEANWHILE- Operating conditions in Dubai\u2019s non-oil sector improved at a faster pace<\/strong>, driven by a quicker increase in new business inflows and as stockpiling picked up after the first drop-off in two years.
