He looks at four criteria to decide whether or not to pull the trigger on an investment: a) The business has a technology or solution that could help boost Mashreq\u2019s own revenues; b) it has a technology or solution that could help improve customer experience somehow; c) it improves the bank\u2019s risk management capabilities; and d) it helps improve their operational efficiency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cWhen we invest in a business, it\u2019s because it fits into our strategic priorities as a bank <\/strong>[\u2026] the strategic alignment allows us to explore synergies outside of just pure returns,\u201d Rajan explains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The other differentiator is venture building.<\/strong> While there are venture builders in the region, having a venture builder that\u2019s housed within a bank offers some advantages. NeoVentures incubates and validates products within the bank itself prior to market deployment. \u201cThat\u2019s where we validate it before we take it to market,\u201d Rajan says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>That gives them confidence when they\u2019re building something that there is a product-market fit.<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re a commercial bank and we\u2019re using it for ourselves, which provides early validation of value and fit,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It also gives the startup that is building those solutions scale and resources that are hard to find elsewhere.<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re building the software in-house alongside our partners, so there\u2019s appreciation for what the founder does and what their challenges are,\u201d Rajan explains. \u201cBecause of that and because of the backing of Mashreq, we\u2019re able to give them instant access to capital and to customers, we give them the [chance] to scale up, and very importantly, we give them regulatory and compliance coverage, because they come onto our regulatory and compliance rails, which adds that degree of credibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The venture building side of things operates with a lean team, but the CVC \u201csits on the shoulders of a giant<\/strong>,\u201d as Rajan puts it. He notes that the Wholesale Digital Studio and NeoVentures are closely integrated, allowing for product transfer and execution across the bank and venture arm. \u201cThere is a lot of cross-pollination between the bank and NeoVentures, and that\u2019s the way we would like it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cOne of the things that we are very careful not to do is setting up something that\u2019s a siloed organization<\/strong> that operates completely separate from the bank, and then getting no one to use [the products we build],\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The investment strategy<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>NeoVentures always acquires minority stakes in fintechs it\u2019s investing in<\/strong>, Rajan tells us. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to run the business; we want to support the founder and help them grow the business.\u201d Ticket sizes are tailored to the startup\u2019s stage of growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The VC arm usually goes for seed to series B stage startups<\/strong>, and the strategy is to stay with a startup throughout its journey and invest in future funding rounds as well, Rajan says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>NeoVentures is looking for \u201ccategory-defining fintechs\u201d<\/strong> with the ambition and capability to scale meaningfully, first across the region and, over time, internationally. While it has so far had its eyes only on the region, it\u2019s open to investing globally provided the investment prospects fit into the bank\u2019s priorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">What Rajan is bullish on<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top:0pt;margin:0;padding-left:0;padding-bottom:12pt;line-height:1.2;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left;padding-right:0\"><strong>Given NeoVentures\u2019s mandate to stay aligned with the bank\u2019s own strategic objectives, areas of focus right now include payments, cross-border FX, and digital assets<\/strong>, Rajan tells us. \u201cWe're also looking at growing our trade business, our SME business, and our wealth business,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p
