We\u2019ve had four jump scares \u2014 so far \u2014 from alerts on our phones, the first since the ceasefire began almost a month ago. The alerts came only a few hours after reports of an attack on Adnoc\u2019s (empty) Barakah tanker, which was attempting to pass through Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The tanker was safe with no reported injuries<\/strong>, but the UAE accused Iran of what it says was an unprovoked \u201cterrorist attack\u201d and demanded it halt all hostilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Later, there were <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/uaes-fujairah-says-fire-breaks-out-petroleum-complex-after-iranian-drone-attack-2026-05-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports of a fire erupting at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone<\/a><\/strong><strong> and the UAE <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/article\/c01kgcp-uae-air-defences-detect-four-cruise-missiles-from\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a><\/strong><strong> it intercepted three cruise missiles from Iran <\/strong>while a fourth fell into the sea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The attacks seemed out of the blue<\/strong>, with things remaining calm across the Gulf over the past three weeks since the ceasefire was announced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>But\u2026 they weren\u2019t completely: <\/strong>Before the reported attacks, US President Donald Trump had said US troops would guide stranded ships out of the strait, after which Iran\u2019s navy claimed it blocked US ships from entering Hormuz and threatened to attack any US forces breaking its blockade. Iran also said two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/iran-war-live-tehran-issues-warning-after-trump-offers-us-help-ships-hormuz-2026-05-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">missiles<\/a> hit a US vessel, though US Central Command denied any strike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Iran seems to be targeting every oil export route the UAE has. <\/strong>The Strait remains blocked, and now the Fujairah pipeline, which has been carrying out half of the UAE\u2019s output since the war began, is likely compromised.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>And now\u2026 the question on everyone\u2019s mind: What\u2019s next? <\/strong>We\u2019re keeping an eye out for news out of the UAE or the US on a potential response to the attack.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Not a response but \u2026 <\/strong>last night, the US said it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/us-destroys-six-iranian-small-boats-shoots-down-missiles-drones-us-admiral-says-2026-05-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sank several small Iranian boats<\/a> and shot down missiles and drones launched from Iran as it pushed to open up the strait through its so-called Project Freedom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>It remains unclear what this means for peace negotiations<\/strong>, but it appears that they\u2019re still on track. \u201cAs talks are making progress with Pakistan's gracious effort, the US should be wary of being dragged back into quagmire by ill-wishers. So should the UAE,\u201d Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/araghchi\/status\/2051419381981409354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said on X<\/a> earlier this morning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Sc<\/strong><strong>hools and nurserie<\/strong><strong>s are going remote until the end of the week<\/strong> \u201cto ensure the safety and wellbeing of the educational community,\u201d the Education Ministry said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MOEUAEofficial\/status\/2051360426173317370?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post on X<\/a>, adding that it may extend the directive if necessary. href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaoffice.ae\/en\/news\/2026\/may\/04-05\/dubai-international-dxb\" style=\"\">recent data<\/a>. The question is not whether it recovers \u2014 but how quickly confidence returns to match demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IN CONTEXT- <\/strong>Airspace restrictions imposed at the start of the war were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2026\/05\/04\/this-morning-uae-qatar-kuwait-and-israel-buy-usd-8-6-bn-of-us-defense-systems-adnoc-lines-up-aed-200-bn-for-local-contract-awards\/\" style=\"\">scrapped<\/a> earlier this week, setting the stage for a gradual recovery. Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said flights are currently being ramped up. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>DXB now has 51 airlines \u2014 out of 90 \u2014 serving 192 destinations<\/strong>, Griffiths said, which falls short of the usual throughput. The gap is mostly due to less US and Western European airlines operating flights to and from DXB due to difficulty obtaining ins. cover, as government travel advisories continue, he added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cThe key issue for Western airlines is not demand \u2014 it\u2019s risk-adjusted profitability,\u201d <\/strong>Maslen tells us. \u201cIn the current environment, deploying aircraft into the Gulf comes with higher uncertainty, higher costs, and operational complexity.\u201d Add to that the already highly competitive landscape of the Gulf, and \u201cthe commercial case becomes much harder.\u201d \u201cCapacity follows certainty \u2014 and right now, certainty lies elsewhere,\u201d he adds. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Still, recovery is expected \u2014 and soon:<\/strong> Griffiths expects airlines to come back \u201cvery rapidly now,\u201d Griffiths said. May figures are already strong, and the transfer market, which usually accounts for half of the usual data, is recovering strongly, he said, adding that he remains optimistic, particularly heading into 3Q and 4Q. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The problem?<\/strong> \u201cIf ins. constraints and travel advisories don\u2019t ease,\u201d Maslen says. That might \u201cslow recovery rather than stop it \u2014 but the impact is meaningful. They affect airline decisions, passenger confidence, and cost structures all at once, creating a drag on both capacity and demand, particularly in higher-yield segments where corporate travel providers hold huge influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Already, Griffiths says, its target to reach 100 mn passengers a year has been shifted from 2026 to 2027<\/strong>, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-04\/dubai-airport-passenger-traffic-drops-66-in-march-on-iran-war?embedded-checkout=true\" style=\"\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Despite that, Griffiths still expects to close the year in \u201cpositive territory.\u201d Maslen\u2019s take? \u201cThe recovery is intact \u2014 but the runway has just got longer.
