Dubai\u2019s index was down 1.1%, while Abu Dhabi\u2019s ADX lost 0.8%. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why? <\/strong>The ongoing drama around the Strait of Hormuz is keeping investors jittery, especially since the outlook for the next round of US-Iran talks seems murky, with Iran not yet confirming its plans to attend. Iran <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-04-22-2026\" style=\"\">fired on three ships<\/a> in the Strait again yesterday, making the situation even more alarming. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a> <strong>The ongoing disruptions are keeping us all guessing how this will impact the Gulf\u2019s economies<\/strong>, with every week that the Hormuz blockade continues causing worse knock-on effects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>One of those is the disruption to export routes for the Gulf, which could disrupt FX inflows <\/strong>\u2014 hence reports of a currency swap with the US. But the UAE has denied the need for \u201cfinancial backing.\u201d \u201cAny suggestion that the UAE requires external financial backing misreads the facts,\u201d the UAE\u2019s ambassador to the US Youssef Otaiba <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/UAEEmbassyUS\/status\/2046660665121595409\" style=\"\">said on X<\/a>, in response to media claiming the US is considering a financial backstop to help the UAE following comments from US President Donald Trump. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cThe UAE is one of the world\u2019s most financially resilient economies<\/strong>, underpinned by more than USD 2 tn in sovereign investment assets,\u201d Otaiba said, adding that \u201cwe very much appreciate President Trump\u2019s recognition of the UAE as one of America\u2019s most important economic [and] trade partners.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Crucially<\/strong>, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2026\/04\/21\/this-morning-pakistan-follows-through-on-clearing-uae-dues-us-stops-short-of-uae-currency-swap-for-now\/\" style=\"\">currency swap<\/a> that was said to be on the table wouldn\u2019t exactly mean the UAE needs a bailout. Ryan Lemand, founder and CEO of wealth manager NeoVision, explained it in a recent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7452585750514065408\/\" style=\"\">LinkedIn post<\/a>: \u201cNo one is giving anyone money. It's a currency loan, secured by a currency deposit, with no credit risk on either side. The Fed has standing swap lines with the European Central Bank, Bank of Japan, Bank of England, Saudi National Bank, and Bank of Canada, and opened temporary ones in 2008 and 2020. None of those counterparties were receiving \u2018aid\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Plus: US officials didn\u2019t really say the UAE needs any help<\/strong> \u2014 but that it would be there in the very unlikely case it does. \u201cIf \u200cthe \u2060UAE had a problem \u2014 I find it hard to believe \u2014 but if they had a problem, we would be there for them,\u201d Trump <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/trump-says-currency-swap-with-uae-is-under-consideration-2026-04-21\/\" style=\"\">was quoted<\/a> as saying. Otaiba also noted that the Central Bank of the UAE currently has more than USD 300 bn in foreign currency reserves. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>For now, the issue the UAE is facing is more of a disrupted inflow of FX due to trade disruptions <\/strong>\u2014 but this is more of a \u201cliquidity mismatch\u201d and a timing-related issue than a solvency-related one, Lemand wrote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Despite the disruptions of the war<\/strong>, there\u2019s a lot that\u2019s still business as usual. Non-compliance could trigger supervisory action or financial penalties. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AND- <\/strong><strong>Ajman tightens screws on price gouging:<\/strong> The Ajman Department of Economic Development has ordered suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, and other businesses in the emirate to notify the Economy and Tourism Ministry in advance \u2014 with documented economic justifications \u2014 before raising prices on basic commodities, state news agency <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/article\/bzuf90q-ajman-ded-tightens-controls-adjusting-prices-basic\" style=\"\">Wam<\/a> reports. The UAE is rolling out <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2025\/09\/30\/finmin-outlines-deadlines-for-new-e-invoicing-system-with-phased-rollout-planned-for-next-year\/\" style=\"\">mandatory e-invoicing<\/a> in phases, with voluntary adoption starting July 2026, followed by a hard mandate from January 2027 for businesses with annual revenues exceeding AED 50 mn. The requirement will encompass smaller firms in subsequent stages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How it\u2019s going to work:<\/strong> All B2B and B2G invoices must pass through accredited service providers (ASPs) and be reported to the Federal Tax Authority in near real time \u2014 shifting the system from document-based reporting to structured, machine-readable data flows. Around 26 ASPs have already been approved \u2014 including <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.sap.com\/mena\/2026\/04\/uae-ministry-of-finance-approves-sap-as-einvoicing-service-provider\/\" style=\"\">SAP<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/suntec-business-solutions_einvoicing-uae-fta-activity-7385955447696060416-m_7C\/\" style=\"\">Suntec Business Solutions<\/a> \u2014 and allowed the exchange of e-invoices via the EmaraTax platform, provided businesses already have an ASP selected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>On one hand, the shift to near real-time reporting reduces VAT fraud and tax evasion<\/strong> by allowing tax authorities to validate transactions instantly and reducing reliance on periodic manual audits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But it also has an impact on business costs, due diligence, and M&A. <\/strong>Businesses can see up to a 66% reduction in invoice processing costs due to the reduction of manual data entry and errors and the acceleration of payment cycles, the Finance Ministry <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mof.gov.ae\/en\/about-us\/initiatives\/einvoicing\/\" style=\"\">said<\/a>. It also gives SMEs quicker (and better) access to financing, since verified digital invoices can strengthen credit assessments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And for dealmakers, automated invoices translate into earlier visibility on risks<\/strong> previously emerging late \u2014 or not at all. \u201cSome of the potential risks and challenges would be flagged much earlier during the [transaction\u2019s] lifecycle because you have data which is structural and readily available,\u201d Pierre Arman, managing director at Alvarez & Marsal, tells EnterpriseAM. \u201cEvery single transaction becomes auditable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Instead of relying on sampled invoices and delayed financials, buyers will be looking at complete, timestamped datasets<\/strong> that reflect actual transaction flows as they happen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cNow you have full transparency<\/strong>,\u201d Ali Anwar, managing director and Middle East practice leader of global transaction advisory at Alvarez & Marsal, tells EnterpriseAM, noting that the risk of fake, duplicate, or fraudulent invoices becomes \u201cvery, very low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This deeper view of transactional history also strengthens valuation confidence<\/strong>, especially for metrics like earnouts and deferred consideration. Timestamped invoices make patterns such as end-of-period revenue spikes easier to detect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Near real-time visibility also provides clearer visibility post-acquisition.<\/strong> \u201c[Buyers] should be able to get very quick monthly reports or even weekly or daily reports and get an understanding of how the business is performing,\u201d Anwar said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The transition will make the difference between strongly governed firms and weakly governed ones much more stark<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Across the board, e-invoicing reframes invoicing from a back-office function to a core governance tool<\/strong>, where AI and analytics can be used as a source of operational insight, Zoho\u2019s Vice President of Global Product Strategy, Development, and Alliance Prashant Ganti tells EnterpriseAM. Companies ready for this transition can demonstrate operational control and reduce transaction friction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cIt gives them a good [window] to clean up their data <\/strong>[\u2026] and make sure there are no surprises that the buyer will find later,\u201d Anwar said. The embedded financing solution \u2014 Neo Credit Loans \u2014 will allow customers across Toothpick\u2019s network of aesthetic and dental clinics to access up to AED 150k in financing for treatments and procedures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How\u2019s it done?<\/strong> Clinics make the financing request from their side through Toothpick\u2019s platform, and Mashreq authenticates the customer and shares a link to complete the application, after which it disburses the funds directly to the clinic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The partnership with Toothpick is one of many for Mashreq as of late. <\/strong>The lender has partnerships in place with different ecosystem players across its countries of operation \u2014 from telecom firms like Etisalat by e& in Egypt, to Toothpick and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thunes.com\/news\/thunes-to-power-real-time-mobile-wallet-payouts-for-mashreq-customers\/\" style=\"\">Thunes<\/a>, a partnership that allows Mashreq to speed up and make international transfers more affordable. We\u2019re extending our own reach into new types of segments, and we\u2019re extending our partners\u2019 reach in a meaningful way,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The bank is inking partnerships across the world <\/strong>\u2014 from Egypt and the UAE to other countries \u2014 and across a variety of sectors. The common denominator? They need to be digital first and foremost, Al Sakaal said. \u201cWe need to have a similar DNA, and we look for partners where we can genuinely add value to their customer base,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s not about how strong or big the firm is.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Digital partnerships also help the bank extend its reach into markets with huge underbanked and unbanked populations<\/strong>, with the goal of driving financial inclusion. Working with the second largest telco in Egypt, Etisalat, for example, helped it extend its services across huge swathes of the population who might not hear of, or have access to, Mashreq otherwise. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cOnly 20-30% of Egypt is banked, so extending branches all over Egypt is not convenient<\/strong>,\u201d Al Sakaal said. \u201cPeople are already very happy with their telcos and have gotten used to their apps, so why not embed our services into those apps, allow them to open an account, access financing, and do what they need to do all through their existing Etisalat app,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>That model was replicated across several markets where Mashreq operates. <\/strong>In markets where the bank does not offer retail services, strategic partnerships allow it to extend those services through partner banks and institutions.
