href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/modgovae\/status\/2028603672595501454?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2028603672595501454%7Ctwgr%5Ea3cc92f8fa84d0081c4e57b179987b125f9596b1%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thenationalnews.com%2Fnews%2Fmena%2F2026%2F03%2F02%2Flive-israel-us-iran-strikes%2F\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Defense Ministry<\/a> confirmed were the result of a \u201cbarrage of ballistic missiles launched from Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p UAE despite energy infrastructure being targeted for the first time since the conflict began. (We have more on that in this morning\u2019s War Watch, below.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>No *physical* damage doesn\u2019t mean there hasn\u2019t been damage: The biggest hit the GCC <\/strong><strong>has taken has been to our \u201csafe haven\u201d status. <\/strong>That has government officials, business leaders, and investment professionals alike working overtime to help shore up the sense of security residents used to take for granted, as we write in this morning\u2019s Big Story Today. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Most businesses we\u2019re talking to are taking a wait-and-see approach<\/strong>, with relatively few opting to pull up stakes and run. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>MEANWHILE- The macro forecasts have also started to pour in: <\/strong>JPMorgan has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/jpmorgan-trims-gcc-non-oil-growth-forecasts-middle-east-conflict-2026-03-02\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> trimmed its 2026 non-oil growth forecasts for the GCC economies by an average of 0.3 percentage points following the expansion of the US-Iran conflict over the weekend. The UAE and Bahrain are expected to feel the sharpest pinch, with the bank cutting our forecast by 0.4% and the kingdom\u2019s by 0.5%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JPM warns of a risk of bigger revisions ahead:<\/strong> \u201cRisks are elevated across multiple fronts and will depend heavily on the conflict\u2019s outcomes,\u201d JPMorgan analysts said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ALSO- Fitch Ratings sounded a reassuring note on Middle Eastern sovereign <\/strong><strong>credit ratings<\/strong>, saying they have sufficient headroom to weather a short-term regional conflict, provided there is no further escalation, according to a Fitch Ratings <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fitchratings.com\/research\/sovereigns\/iran-conflicts-scope-duration-will-determine-sovereign-rating-impact-02-03-2026\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The ratings agency cautioned, however, that material damage to GCC energy export <\/strong><strong>infrastructure <\/strong>\u2014 see today\u2019s War Watch \u2014 remains the primary risk to trigger a negative outlook. <strong>It expects the conflict to last less than a month<\/strong> due to dwindling Iranian military capacity and domestic US aversion to a prolonged conflict.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The agency is also not too concerned about the Strait of Hormuz\u2019s closure for the <\/strong><strong>duration of the conflict<\/strong>, saying that the Gulf\u2019s pipelines will allow a big portion of production to pass through.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Fitch maintains \u2014 as we do \u2014 that the largest risk is to the region\u2019s safe-haven status<\/strong>, which could see long-term reputational damage, especially if an exodus of expats takes place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">^^ We look at the likelihood of that happening, the general sentiment among people we\u2019ve spoken to, and much more in this morning\u2019s issue, below. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Watch this space<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a> <strong>MARKET<\/strong><strong> WATCH \u2014 The UAE\u2019s capital markets face a high-stakes <\/strong><strong>reo<\/strong><strong>pening tomorrow <\/strong>after a rare <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/am-edition\/#112015\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">two-day suspension<\/a> designed to blunt the impact of escalating regional tensions. The closure was designed to take the energy out of any \u201cpanic-driven selling\u201d after the outbreak of war and allow for a \u201cmore orderly\u201d return to trade, Vijay Valecha, CIO at Century Financial, tells EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Look for heavy trading at the opening bell:<\/strong> Hamza Dweik, head of MENA trading at Saxo Bank, notes that traders will start the day tomorrow with a <strong>significant backlog of orders<\/strong>, which typically signals a \u201cvolatile open\u201d where a sharp move in the first hour would not be unusual.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Still, ours are very \u201cinstitutional\u201d markets, with long-only capital serving as anchors. <\/strong>That means floors are holding in much of the region, as Dweik pointed to Saudi Arabia\u2019s Tadawul, where the TASI initially dropped more than 4% at the start of trading on Sunday before quickly paring its losses. That performance, Dweik argues, points to \u201cselective risk reduction\u201d and elevated uncertainty rather than a total breakdown in market functioning or \u201cindiscriminate selling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>For the DFM<\/strong>, which closed at 6.5k on Friday, Valecha identifies a \u201cstrong support band\u201d between 6.28k and 6.3k. And of course, the images circulating have become a source of fear, especially for expats and foreigners in the GCC,\u201d MENA economist Hamzeh Al Gaaod tells us. \u201cI believe this will have the biggest negative impact on economies in the future. But for now, the impact will be on aviation, retail, transportation, tourism, and energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Businesses have shifted from an initial state of shock to a wait-and-see stance<\/strong>, especially after the government released figures showing that defense forces continue to sweep the sky of the vast majority of inbound missiles and drones, Amandeep Ahuja, head of research at business consulting and advisory firm Confluence Consultants, told EnterpriseAM. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cOf all the glamorous things that we often see in the region, its defense capabilities <\/strong><strong>haven\u2019t been highlighted to the extent that businesses would be aware<\/strong> that we even have an air force or defense system,\u201d Ahuja said. The government\u2019s response and the success of its air defense system have helped reassure many of those who were initially in panic mode, she added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Despite reports of businesses pulling out their UAE staff and drawing up contingency <\/strong><strong>plans, Ahuja believes most businesses in the Emirates are thinking long-term.<\/strong> \u201cFor businesses, it\u2019s a long, drawn-out process to expand into this region,\u201d so leaving is not a decision that would be taken lightly, she said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>That sentiment was echoed by KKR<\/strong>, where a spokesperson <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-01\/iran-strikes-uae-hedge-funds-banks-in-contingency-mode-in-dubai-abu-dhabi\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">told the press<\/a>: \u201cWe take a long-term approach to investing and regularly assess geopolitical and macroeconomic developments as part of our process.\u201d The firm says it will be \u201cmonitoring\u201d developments closely and adjusting its approach as needed. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A top business advisor we spoke with sees little chance of inbound corporate <\/strong><strong>partnerships slowing down.<\/strong> \u201cInbound investors might price risk in or insure differently, but they\u2019ll still want to benefit from the size of the opportunity that\u2019s up for grabs here,\u201d said the source, who regularly advises top companies in the UAE on risk, corporate crises, and law enforcement issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Others who have recently relocated stand firm on their plans for now:<\/strong> \u201cI have great faith in [the UAE\u2019s] commitment to growth and safety, particularly given its rapid coordinated response over the weekend, and feel as confident as ever building our future here,\u201d Philip Khinda, managing partner at Khinda Advisory, a regulatory consulting firm and board advisor, told EnterpriseAM. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The US i<\/strong><strong>s calling on its citizens to leave the country: <\/strong>The US State Department has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AsstSecStateCA\/status\/2028588420403241021?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2028588420403241021%7Ctwgr%5Ed38476165de57b4177b27eacd6eb21c793ee1129%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloomberg.com%2Fnews%2Farticles%2F2026-03-02%2Fstate-department-tells-americans-to-leave-middle-east-for-safety\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a> Americans to depart over a dozen countries in the region, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, and Oman, citing \u201cserious safety risks.\u201d But with airspace closed and flights restricted, it may prove difficult for Americans to leave the region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">A sense of \u201cnormal\u201d on social media<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Working overtime to project a sense of normalcy: <\/strong>From business leaders and senior government officials to influencers and everyday residents, folks in the Emirates have taken to social media to project a sense of calm. Dozens of expats are on social media showing themselves out in sunny Dubai and Abu Dhabi, assuring those who are watching from afar that they feel <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7434112363747901440\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">as safe as ever<\/a> \u2014 and showing gratitude to the government for its ability to keep business going. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s not just expats:<\/strong> Official Emirati media pages and Emirati leaders are working overtime to reassure people that it\u2019s safe to be out and about. We were also impacted: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/enterpriseam.com\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EnterpriseAM.com<\/a> is one of the many services hosted on AWS out of the UAE, and our site was down for more than a day after the incident, forcing us to use a backup in another jurisdiction. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong><strong>Data <\/strong><strong>center outages in the UAE and Bahrain were a wake-up call for the <\/strong><strong>digital economy<\/strong>, exposing centralized data centers as a critical infrastructure vulnerability that businesses across MENA had previously ignored. The incident occurred on the same day Iranian ballistic missiles struck targets across the GCC, including the UAE and Bahrain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Is it really that simple?<\/strong> AWS services are designed to withstand a single data center failure, but the outage spread to a second group of data centers, triggering a double failure that bypassed standard redundancies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>At the same time<\/strong>, a power failure in <strong>Bahrain <\/strong>knocked out a single zone, taking other racks offline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>As of Monday night, we understand that full restoration of the two damaged data center <\/strong><strong>zones will take at least another day<\/strong>, with both physical cooling and power systems undergoing repairs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Who else was affected?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AWS, businesses, and banks love to talk about their infrastructure when they ink <\/strong><strong>contracts<\/strong>, flooding journalists\u2019 inboxes with press releases. They\u2019re quieter about details of setups, citing infrastructure security concerns. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Still, we know the division of Amazon is a partner of choice for multiple banks, financial <\/strong><strong>institutions<\/strong>, digital platforms, local government agencies, and logistics companies across the region, with many <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itp.net\/cloud-data\/aws-outage-in-disrupts-internet-across-middle-east\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">relying heavily on key AWS services<\/a>. The outage in Dubai and Bahrain is causing many to report that key services are offline, while others are seeing service quality degraded. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Why it matters<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Data centers and their supporting energy infrastructure are now targets of war<\/strong> on par with oil and gas facilities. Taking them down is a fast way to disrupt government services, businesses, and financial institutions, raising the cost of the conflict \u2014 something Tehran seems keen to do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Hindsight is 20\/20: <\/strong>Companies should now be acutely aware of the importance of multi-region deployment of their apps and services to avoid impact in the future, Engagesoft CTO Tareq Tahboub tells us.
