<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Iran may have just taken a big step toward claiming Hormuz as the toll-generating <\/strong><strong>equivalent of the Suez Canal. <\/strong>A top Iranian diplomat says Oman and Tehran are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/middle-east\/iran-says-drafting-protocol-with-oman-to-oversee-strait-of-hormuz-transit\/3889814\" style=\"\">\u201cdrafting a protocol for Iran and Oman to supervise transit in the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d<\/a> The agreement will \u201cfacilitate and ensure safe passage and provide better services to ships that pass through this route,\u201d deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi says. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Oman has been quiet about what it\u2019s up to, but three Omani ships appear to have passed <\/strong><strong>through Hormuz late yesterday<\/strong> \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-02\/three-ships-appear-to-enter-hormuz-by-new-route-along-oman-coast\" style=\"\">Bloomberg<\/a> says they were two oil tankers and an LNG carrier. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/first-lng-deliveries-oman-german-firm-begin-despite-iran-war-2026-04-01\/\" style=\"\">Reuters<\/a> separately reported that Oman had mysteriously delivered its first LNG shipment to Germany\u2019s state-owned <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sefe.eu\/en\/\" style=\"\">SEFE<\/a>, which said only that the shipment was \u201cunaffected\u201d by the war. The UAE also maxed out its <strong>Adcop<\/strong> pipeline \u2014 the Habshan-Fujairah bypass \u2014 with some <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/asharqbusiness.com\/power\/126403\/%D8%A5%D9%86%D9%81%D9%88%D8%BA%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%81-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A5%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AA%D9%83%D8%AB%D9%81-%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%81%D8%B7-%D9%85%D9%86-%D9%85%D9%8A%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%81%D8%AC%D9%8A%D8%B1%D8%A9\/\" style=\"\">1.5 mn bbl\/d<\/a> now flowing, or about 40% of pre-war levels. Meanwhile, Iraq is now pushing volumes by land through Syria and exporting some 200k bbl\/d through its <strong>Kirkuk-Ceyhan<\/strong> pipeline \u2014 a meager 5% of its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/ranked-worlds-biggest-producers-of-crude-oil\/\" style=\"\">pre-war exports<\/a> of 4.4 mn bbl\/d. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But other energy exporters are not as lucky:<\/strong> Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar don\u2019t have the geographical advantages that Saudi and the UAE do \u2014 they\u2019re fully dependent on Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Here is what\u2019s being pitched<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#1-<\/strong> <strong>Syria-bound corridors for Iraq? <\/strong>Iraq appears to be going all in on Syria as its hedge for Hormuz disruptions. Iraqi officials said earlier this week they are discussing a possible pipeline project with Syria, and Iraq is also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/iraqs-somo-awards-fuel-oil-supply-contracts-exports-via-syria-2026-03-31\/\" style=\"\">reviving<\/a> a mid-century corridor to move about 650k metric tons of fuel oil per month overland through Syria, marking the first time the route has been used in decades. Another option could be a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2025\/06\/26\/specter-of-hormuz-closure-revives-interest-in-dormant-pipeline-projects\/\" style=\"\">Jordan-bound<\/a> connection. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#2- Expanded East-West pipelines for Saudi (and perhaps the wider Gulf): <\/strong>Riyadh is currently exploring whether to expand the current Yanbu-bound East-West pipeline or build a new one altogether connected to new Red Sea terminals like Neom, Christopher Bush, the CEO of Cat Group and one of the main executors of the Saudi East-West pipeline, told the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/880664d8-e110-4760-8b00-aa3141a770ff?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" style=\"\">Financial Times<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#3- A redundant network: <\/strong>One of the long-term ideas being explored by policymakers includes working on a redundant \u201cweb of corridors\u201d rather than a single pipe, the Atlantic Council\u2019s Maisoon Kafafy told the FT. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Challenges remain<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The price tag would be staggering.<\/strong> Bush estimates that replicating the East-West pipeline today would cost at least USD 5 bn due to the difficulty of blasting through hard basalt mountain ranges.
