The pact makes the UK the first G7 country to ink such an agreement with the bloc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Inside the agreement: <\/strong>The two sides agreed to remove duties on roughly GBP 580 mn worth of UK exports to the GCC annually, to speed up customs procedures (48 hours and six hours for perishables), and facilitate business activity between the two sides. The statement also pointed to more investment and industrial collaboration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> The agreement is welcome news for a struggling UK economy \u2014 adding around GBP 3.7 bn a year to its economy \u2014 while for the GCC, it\u2019s another notch in the region\u2019s economic and trade diversification belt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The agreement spans<\/strong> \u201ctrade in goods and services, financial services, digital trade, investment protection, government procurement, telecommunications, and the movement of natural persons,\u201d Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Jasem Albudaiwi said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>AND- Data is a big part of it: <\/strong>In a first, UK firms will be able to store and process data outside the region, with the statement saying that the move will \u201csave businesses money on setting up costly data [centers] in the Gulf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>That\u2019s good news for us: <\/strong>The move is a vote of confidence for our data center sector \u2014 a key pillar of the GCC\u2019s economic diversification drive, which took a hit (literally) when an Iranian drone <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2026\/03\/03\/dubais-data-center-outage-exposes-vulnerable-region-ecosystem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struck a data center facility<\/a>, leading to a prolonged outage and months-long repairs. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2026\/03\/03\/dubais-data-center-outage-exposes-vulnerable-region-ecosystem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At the time<\/a>, experts told us that the strikes could challenge the Gulf\u2019s image as a secure hub for AI investment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>BACKGROUND- <\/strong>Talks have been ongoing for around four years now, with reports of an imminent agreement going as far back <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2024\/11\/21\/this-morning-uk-prime-minister-to-head-to-the-gcc-next-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">In other trade news<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Austrian Economy and Energy Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer called on <\/strong><strong>the EU to expedite its freetrade negotiations with the UAE<\/strong>, saying that \u201cthere is no [agreement] in sight,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-20\/austria-urges-faster-eu-uae-trade-talks-after-plastics-mega-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports.
