The project will export 9.5 mtpa of LNG once operational in 2030 and has already secured several offtakers, including Aramco Trading, Glencore, and Petronas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The strategy:<\/strong> Caturus is building a vertically integrated gas business combining upstream production with export infrastructure. The company says it now produces more than 1 bcfe\/d net, ranking it among the US\u2019 top 10 private gas-focused producers. In the lead-up to the final investment decision, Caturus expanded upstream production further through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sm-energy.com\/investors\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/366\/sm-energy-announces-agreement-to-sell-950-million-in-assets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquisition<\/a> of Galvan Ranch gas assets from US-based oil and gas producer SM Energy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The logic is increasingly becoming standard across LNG:<\/strong> Own the gas, own the export terminal, own the flows, and reduce dependence on third-party supply during volatile market conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The investor lineup:<\/strong> Total commitments tied to the project reached USD 21.25 bn across debt and equity financing, with participants including Mubadala Energy, US alternative investment manager Kimmeridge, Canada-based CPP Investments, BlackRock, US-based Ares Management, and US-based energy infrastructure investment firm EOC Partners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Mubadala did not disclose the size of its own equity contribution<\/strong>, though the company already held a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2025\/08\/08\/this-morning-uae-russia-to-double-trade-dubai-licensed-crypto-firms-can-now-service-other-emirates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">24.1% stake<\/a> in the broader Caturus platform \u2014 comprising Commonwealth LNG and Caturus\u2019 upstream operations \u2014 prior to this financing round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Ironically, the US captured the upside from disruptions in the Middle East<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>US gas emerged as a strategic asset during the Middle East disruptions <\/strong>as buyers turned to supply sitting outside the Gulf\u2019s immediate perimeter. US LNG exports hit a record 11.7 mn tons in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-lng-exports-break-record-high-middle-east-war-disrupts-global-supply-2026-04-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-lng-exports-break-record-high-middle-east-war-disrupts-global-supply-2026-04-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">h<\/a> as plants ran above nameplate capacity. Shipments to Asia more than doubled to 1.99 mn tons in March, up from 970k tons in February, before climbing an additional 36% to 2.71 mn tons in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-lng-exports-asia-surged-april-middle-east-conflict-curtailed-supply-2026-05-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April<\/a>. Europe remained the largest buyer of US LNG during both months, taking 7.49 mn tons in March and 6.14 mn tons in April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The buildout is still far from complete:<\/strong> US LNG export capacity is projected to nearly double to 241 mn tons by 2035 based on projects that have already reached final investments, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/febf8069-df7c-44b3-9313-ffda3c00812a?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a> reports, citing Rapidan Energy Group. More broadly, around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics\/data-tools\/global-lng-capacity-tracker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">139 mn<\/a> tons per year are expected to come online between 2025 and 2031 from under-construction projects in the US.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Why gas matters is at the forefront \u2014 especially now: <\/strong>Crude can shift across pipelines, tankers, and storage with relative ease, while gas is structurally <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/26\/natural-gas-hit-harder-than-oil-amid-regional-disruptions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">less forgiving<\/a> \u2014 fewer vessels, tighter logistics, and thinner buffers. The global LNG system depends on fixed liquefaction, shipping, and regasification capacity, with limited room to improvise when flows are hit. And unlike oil, gas markets lack any comparable strategic reserve or quick supply response to stabilize conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The macro picture<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Mubadala\u2019s move forms part of a broader push into US energy assets since Washington <\/strong><strong>pledged to unleash \u201cAmerican energy dominance.\u201d<\/strong> Last month, Adnoc said it is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/04\/30\/adnoc-maps-full-stack-gas-play-in-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lining up tens of bns of USD<\/a> for its US gas push, with 29 agreements under review to stitch together a full-stack vertically integrated gas business. This came after Adnoc\u2019s XRG acquired an 11.7% stake in the first phase of NextDecade\u2019s USD 18 bn Rio Grande LNG export facility in Texas <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2025\/09\/26\/xrg-finalizes-acquisition-of-stake-in-rio-grandes-lng-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last year<\/a> \u2014 marking its first direct investment in US gas infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The sovereign wealth fund\u2019s investment is a \u201clong-term investment in one of the world\u2019s <\/strong><strong>most dynamic energy markets<\/strong>\u201d rather than a short-term geopolitical response, COO of Mubadala Energy Adnan Bu Fateem told the salmon-colored paper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The signal<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The regional disruptions highlighted the extent to which the US is able to benefit from <\/strong><strong>periods of global volatility. <\/strong> As LNG shipments faced tighter passage conditions through Hormuz and crude flows came under pressure in the Middle East, US exports rose to record highs, acting as the market\u2019s swing supplier.
