The terminal also handled a record 1.9 mn TEUs in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Why it matters<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The trade lane is crowded \u2014 and that is precisely the point:<\/strong> Intra-Asia shipping has become one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/insights\/growth\/2025\/09\/22\/intra-asia-powerhouse-of-global-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contested<\/a> container markets, with at least 69 active players and regional container capacity rising 13% last year to 2.4 mn TEUs. Meanwhile, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia are now pushing port upgrades to handle bigger vessels and rising cargo volumes, positioning Laem Chabang\u2019s next phase \u2014 and DP World\u2019s renewed berth position \u2014 inside a wider regional upgrade cycle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Bigger port, bigger role: <\/strong>Laem Chabang\u2019s next phase is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeco.or.th\/en\/laem-chabang-port-phase-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designed<\/a> to increase the port\u2019s container capacity from 11 mn TEUs to 18 mn TEUs annually and raise vehicle handling from 2 mn to 3 mn cars a year. Terminal F1 is scheduled to open in 2027, while F2 is slated for 2031.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The next lever is inland connectivity:<\/strong> DP World is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpworld.com\/en\/news\/dp-world-secures-laem-chabang-concession-extension-amid-rising-intra-asia-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pairing<\/a> the berth extension with a wider Thailand network that includes cross-border trucking, landside logistics, freight corridor, and a rail-connected inland container yard in Khon Kaen with a thrice-weekly shuttle to Laem Chabang.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Rails is where phase 3 gets serious:<\/strong> The expansion plan is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeco.or.th\/en\/laem-chabang-port-phase-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeting<\/a> raising rail\u2019s share of hinterland transport from 7% to 30%, with rail capacity set at 6 mn containers a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Same playbook, different mechanics<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The regional buildout is already underway:<\/strong> The Leam Chabang extension fits a wider DP World push across Southeast Asian gateways. In Indonesia, the port operator is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpworld.com\/en\/news\/dp-world-signs-deal-to-double-capacity-at-indonesias-belawan-new-container-terminal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanding<\/a> Belwana New Container Terminal to 1.4 mn TEUs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpworld.com\/en\/news\/dp-world-breaks-ground-on-new-container-terminal-in-east-java\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">building<\/a> a new 3 mn-TEU terminal with Masipon Group in East Java, alongside an industrial and logistics park. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, DP World <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpworld.com\/en\/news\/dp-world-and-vimc-lines-launch-domestic-coastal-logistics-service-to-boost-south-vietnam-connectivity\" target=\"_blank\"
