Within the first 24 hours, some merchant vessels were ordered to turn back \u2014 yet at the same time, some vessels continued to transit Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Ins and outs<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Who, then, was still getting through?<\/strong> \u201cEarly signals indicate that limited transits are still occurring under defined conditions, particularly where voyages are clearly non-Iranian in destination or where cargoes fall within humanitarian or essential goods classifications,\u201d Daejin Lee, global head of research at Fertmax, tells EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Vessel-tracking <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-sanctioned-chinese-tanker-passes-strait-hormuz-despite-us-blockade-data-shows-2026-04-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a><\/strong><strong> showed that some ships continued to transit Hormuz <\/strong>\u2014 including sanctioned tankers. The Murlikishan \u2014 a tanker under US sanctions and linked to networks that have moved Iranian oil \u2014 likely passed because it was bound for Iraq to load fuel oil rather than calling at an Iranian port. Panama-flagged Peace Gulf \u2014 a regular carrier of Iranian naphtha via Hamriyah \u2014 was also allowed through.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Who was turned back? <\/strong>Around six merchant vessels were ordered to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/six-ships-turned-around-part-strait-hormuz-blockade-us-military-says-2026-04-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reverse<\/a> course in the first 24 hours, which indicates enforcement is real, but selective. The Rich Starry \u2014 another sanctioned tanker \u2014 had to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/sanctioned-tanker-turns-back-strait-hormuz-day-after-gulf-exit-2026-04-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turn back<\/a> after initially transiting the strait. It had loaded roughly 250k barrels of methanol in Hamriyah, placing its voyage somewhere between a breakthrough and a false start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Our take<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The pattern points to a narrower reality: the blockade does not treat Hormuz as fully shut. <\/strong>Restrictions appear focused on ships heading to or from Iranian ports and nearby coastal areas, rather than all traffic through the strait \u2014 which explains why some vessels were still able to pass even as Washington said the blockade was fully in force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">What\u2019s the next phase of pressure?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Storage is the next pressure point:<\/strong> Iran continued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/what-does-us-naval-blockade-iran-mean-oil-flows-2026-04-13\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exporting<\/a> crude during the conflict, but the strategy now is to choke those outbound flows long enough to force a production response once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dec9c510-9dd8-434b-abe8-5f9ecbb41e55?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">storage begins to fill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>How quickly does the squeeze bite? Not immediately. <\/strong>Iran appears to have roughly 10-15 days before storage constraints start pushing it toward output cuts. However, Iran still has a land border and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/04\/14\/us-blockade-of-iranian-ports-puts-gulf-shipping-on-high-alert-as-brent-briefly-tops-usd-100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alternative import routes<\/a>, limiting how much a naval squeeze alone can isolate the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">What to watch<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The question is whether the blockade will erode the structural advantage Iranian-linked <\/strong><strong>vessels have held since 28 Februar<\/strong>y \u2014 and whether it will undermine the viability of bilateral-arrangement tonnage and the informal IRGC toll system that has underpinned transit access throughout this crisis\u2026. the first real signs should come from vessel traffic over the next few days,\u201d Lee adds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align:
