These volumes can move quickly once routes reopen. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Not that quick though: <\/strong>\u201cIt would likely take more than two weeks to clear the backlog even under normal conditions, [which is] too short to restore the level of confidence needed to fully unwind the embedded uncertainty premium \u2014 particularly for Arabian Gulf loading routes,\u201d Daejin Lee, global head of research at Fertmax, told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/shippers-seek-clarity-hormuz-reopening-after-us-iran-ceasefire-deal-2026-04-08\/\" style=\"\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But clearing the backlog of cargoes is only half the equation \u2014 and moving ships out is <\/strong><strong>easier than convincing them to come back in.<\/strong> Hundreds of vessels and shipowners are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lloydslist.com\/LL1156847\/Shipowners-and-charterers-prepare-to-move-after-US-and-Iran-agree-ceasefire\" style=\"\">preparing<\/a> to move, but transit protocols and key terms are still unclear. Charters remain cautious, with Maersk <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/maersk-says-us-iran-ceasefire-may-create-strait-hormuz-transit-opportunities-2026-04-08\/\" style=\"\">noting<\/a> that \u201cthe ceasefire may create transit [windows], but it does not yet provide full maritime certainty and we need to understand all potential conditions attached.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Crucially, without the confidence that tankers will be there to lift cargo, producers won\u2019t rush <\/strong><strong>to restart<\/strong> \u2014 they can\u2019t afford to produce barrels they can\u2019t move. National oil companies like Aramco may also be hesitant to restore output without clarity on the ceasefire conditions. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The GCC will now play a sequencing game:<\/strong> The first barrels back to market won\u2019t come from fresh output but from crude and products already sitting in tanks in the Gulf. That buys time, but it\u2019s finite, and masks the deeper issue that upstream and midstream systems are still impaired. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">It will likely take some time<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Wells don\u2019t like being turned off:<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/08\/business\/energy-environment\/iran-war-oil-gas-restart-oprations.html\" style=\"\">Idle wells<\/a> lose pressure balance, take on water, and face corrosion risks \u2014 especially with hydrogen sulfide exposure. In Saudi and Iraq, where enhanced recovery techniques like gas and water injection are standard, restarting is recalibrating entire reservoir systems under stable conditions. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Refining will be the quiet bottleneck: <\/strong>Saudi\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/ksa\/2026\/03\/24\/officials-are-modeling-a-worst-case-oil-price-scenario\/\" style=\"\">Samref refinery<\/a> has been running below capacity since a drone strike last month, with estimates suggesting full restoration could take up to a year, while the UAE also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2026\/03\/11\/drone-strike-halts-operations-temporarily-at-adnocs-al-ruwais-refinery\/\" style=\"\">halted<\/a> its Ruwais plant after a drone strike. That matters because <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/04\/08\/refined-fuels-are-where-the-hit-lands\/\" style=\"\">refined products<\/a> are where shortages hit harder. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Supply chain too:<\/strong> Turbines, compressors, and specialized equipment will be needed to repair the Gulf\u2019s energy infrastructure. Several companies and service providers have evacuated staff from the region, stretching the time till those workers return and equipment is available. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The <\/strong><strong>overarching risk:<\/strong> All of these recovery timelines are entirely dependent on the situation holding steady. \u201cKinetic action can easily resume if there is discord [regarding] any [aspect] of the 10-point plan proposed by Iran,\u201d Harry Tchilinguirian, head of research at Onyx Capital Group, tells EnterpriseAM. If the conflict reignites \u2014 particularly if the US or Israel target Iranian power plants \u2014 Tchilinguirian warns the next wave of attacks will likely be far more aggressive, with Iran directly striking its neighbors\u2019 energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Qatar took the first step<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Getting work started:<\/strong> Engineers and workers are already heading to Ras Laffan as improving security allows limited activity and maintenance ahead of a planned restart, with some output <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-08\/qatar-begins-work-to-resume-lng-production-after-ceasefire\" style=\"\">possibly<\/a> returning in the coming days. Some operations have already begun to come back online, \u201cwith two LNG trains restarted and a third in progress,\u201d Mehdy Touil, who spent more than a decade at Ras Laffan and is now the lead LNG specialist at Calypso Commodities, tells us, adding that staff never left the site. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IN CONTEXT-<\/strong> Some 17% of LNG capacity has been taken offline at Qatar\u2019s Ras Laffan facility, forcing a shutdown of liquefaction early in the conflict. Repairs to LNG infrastructure are slow by design \u2014 restarting even the intact trains requires a multi-step process of reopening offshore wells, restoring utilities, and restocking refrigerants that cool the gas, Touil told the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/08\/business\/energy-environment\/iran-war-oil-gas-restart-oprations.html?searchResultPosition=1\" style=\"\">New York Times<\/a>. QatarEnergy previously signaled that restoring full capacity could take up to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/24\/today-whats-left-when-gulf-crude-disappears\/\" style=\"\">five years<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">What this means<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Even in the best-case scenario, this is a staggered recovery.<\/strong> Some wells could return in days or weeks if damage is limited and security holds.
